Zu is an avion/diver-type enemy in Final Fantasy XII found in several areas of the Ozmone Plain. It is flying, so the party must attack with ranged weapons (poles/spears/rods also work in the Zodiac versions), magick, or with Technicks.

Bestiary entry[]

Despite the bestiary describing the Zu as having "not a feather on their bodies", the most common drop, most common poach, and the second most common steal-item is a large feather.

Page 1: Observations[]

An avion whose beak has regressed, turning into jagged teeth like those of a tyrant wyrm. They have not a feather on their bodies, but instead are covered with a taut, thin membrane, reducing wind resistance so that they may fly extremely fast when necessary, and with little or no effort at other times. Thus throughout the day do they circle the sky, waiting for prey to appear upon the ground below.

Page 2: Talk About Town[]

Fang of bat, phial of yellow liquid... Crooked fang, phial of yellow liquid... Hrm? What's that? Don't mind me. I'm merely repeating the goods I need to exchange to get my hands on some new ammunition, lest I forget. They're not easy things to come by, you know.

Etymology[]

Zu means "fire" in the Sumerian language. Anzû, before misread as Zû, is a lesser divinity or monster in several Mesopotamian religions. He was conceived by the pure waters of the Apsu and the wide Earth, or as son of Siris. Anzû was seen as a massive bird who can breathe fire and water, although Anzû is alternately seen as a lion-headed eagle (like a reverse griffin).
