How can a bird grow so big!?
Zu is an enemy in Final Fantasy X, found at the Bikanel Desert. It is the first enemy encountered after arriving in a set battle that starts with just Tidus, but Auron and Lulu will rush to aid him if Zu gets more than a couple moves in. If Tidus manages to defeat the set battle against the Zu alone, Auron and Lulu arrive at the battle's end.

Battle
Zu follows a predictable four-stage attack pattern. On the first two turns, it uses a physical attack. On the third turn, Zu's wings will glow and on its next turn it will use Sonic Boom, which hits all party members. While it may look intimidating due to its size and powerful attacks, it is weak to Darkness.
When a Zu drops below one third of its maximum health, it will fall, landing on the ground. This renders it unable to use Sonic Boom and changes its physical attack. Flying Zus cannot be slain in one hit, unless from Zanmato or Doom. While airborne, it will always survive with 1 HP. If a character deals more HP to a Zu than its maximum HP when it is in its flying state, they may say their "finishing line" (such as Auron's "Farewell") even if the bird only drops down and survives on 1 HP.
The equipment it can drop can have two to three slots with one to three abilities, with weapons containing either Piercing, Str +5%, or Mag +5%, as well as Darktouch. The armor it drops has two to three slots, but with only one ability, Dark Ward. The forced encounter at the start of Bikanel always drops equipment, while other encountered Zu's have a 50% chance.
Strategy
Inflicting the Zu with Slow and Darkness and Delay Attack helps. The player can also bestow Haste onto their party to get more turns against it.
Other appearances
Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia

Etymology
Anzû, before misread as Zû, is a lesser divinity or monster in several Mesopotamian religions. He was conceived by the pure waters of the Apsu and the wide Earth, or as son of Siris. Anzû was seen as a massive bird who can breathe fire and water, although Anzû is alternately seen as a lion-headed eagle (like a reverse griffin).
Zu means "fire" in the Sumerian language.Related enemies
