Zereel Ja is a non-playable character introduced in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail. He is a Boonewa Mamool Ja, the current Autarch of Mamook, the husband Miilal Ja and father of Bakool Ja Ja.
History[]
Before Dawntrail[]
When the Dawnservant Gulool Ja Ja united the peoples of Tural, he held a feast, that ended the conflict between the Mamool Ja of Mamook and Xbr'aal of Iq'Braax, which had raged in Yak T'el for decades. Although the two communities had been at peace ever since, animosity between the two had not faded away. Zereel Ja rose to the position of Autarch years before the rite of succession, and held strong belief to Mamook's way to sire blessed siblings to get what they need. Mamook's true predicament was the fact, that the land in the lowlands of Yak T'el was thought incapable of growing anything but Ja Tiika bananas, making life difficult for Mamook. The immense strength of blessed siblings was thought as their only chance for a better life for gaining more fertile lands in upper Yak T'el.
Zereel Ja and his wife Miilal Ja eventually were able to sire blessed siblings, Bakool Ja Ja, after countless failures, since a successful birth of blessed siblings is rare. With his birth, Zereel Ja felt the time was right for the Mamool Ja of Mamook to regain their position as the dominant race in Tural. Also to undermine Iq'Braax, when a word of the daughter of Hunmu Rruk reached Mamook, Zereel Ja sent his follower to eliminate the girl. The follower managed to push her into a cenote, and it was believed she died. But in truth, she survived, and Hunmu Rruk decided to give her to Gulool Ja Ja to be raised and kept safe.
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]
When Gulool Ja Ja declared a rite of succession to decide the next Dawnservant of Tuliyollal, Zereel Ja saw the opportunity for Bakool Ja Ja to ascend the throne. All he would need to do is to become a claimant and win the competition. Bakool Ja Ja eventually became the fourth claimant to the throne alongside Gulool Ja Ja's children Zoraal Ja, Koana and Wuk Lamat. Gulool Ja Ja also appointed Zereel Ja to be one of the seven electors in the rite. His feat was, that the claimants must fight a physical manifestation of Gulool Ja Ja in his prime. The claimants were allowed to fight with their retinues.
Zoraal Ja was the first one to attempt the feat, and he was subsequently defeated. Furiously, he then assaulted Zereel Ja himself, but was again beaten back by the manifestation. Since Zoraal Ja had assaulted an elector, Zereel Ja disqualified him from the rite. He then asked Wuk Lamat and Koana to prepare for the feat, but then Bakool Ja Ja arrived. He was ashamed, having only managed to win two keystones, while the others Wuk Lamat and Koana had won six. Zereel Ja was disappointed, but claimed Bakool Ja Ja can easily just take them from them. But Bakool Ja Ja had just recently been defeated by Wuk Lamat single-handedly, and he admitted it to Zereel Ja. This made Zereel Ja extremely unhappy, and he angrily banished Bakool Ja Ja from Mamook.
Unknown to Zereel Ja, Miilal Ja asked Wuk Lamat and her retinue to help Mamook to break their tradition of relying on blessed siblings. After hearing the truth from Bakool Ja Ja, they agreed, and with Koana's help, the retinue discovered, that the land in Mamook is abundantly fertile, but inhospitable to many plants, but Koana and Alphinaud Leveilleur proposed an easy solution: import seeds from Sharlayan to be farmed in Mamook, and that see what else can be grown. With this problem settled, Wuk Lamat then prepared to complete the last feat of the rite.
When Wuk Lamat and her retinue consisting the Warrior of Light, Krile Baldesion and Alphinaud and Alisaie Leveilleur, arrived to challenge the feat, Zereel Ja was still boasting they can't possibly succeed, Koana arrived alongside Thancred Waters and Urianger Augurelt and declared his intention to aid his sister. Zereel Ja denied it, since he was a claimant himself, but then Koana took his tablets and shot them, renouncing his position as a claimant. This allowed him to join Wuk Lamat, as he had seen she is the one who truly understands the people of Tuliyollal. Together, the retinues took on the manifestation and defeated it. Zereel Ja refused to accept this outcome, but he was appeased by Tankwa, in truth Ketenramm the Blue, the Lominsan explorer, who discovered Tural and traveled alongside Gulool Ja Ja. Zereel Ja relented and handed Wuk Lamat her last keystone. She and her retinue then journeyed deep into the Skydeep Cenote and discovered the golden city.[1]
Later in Tuliyollal, Zereel Ja and Miilal Ja took part in Wuk Lamat's ascension ceremony, in which Wuk Lamat also asked Koana to be Dawnservant with her, Wuk Lamat met them. After what Zereel Ja had been told, that Mamook can prosper without relying on blessed siblings, he had begun to change his ways, and he now supported Wuk Lamat's position. He had also accepted Bakool Ja Ja to come back to the family.[2]
Following Koana's research on Ja Tiika Heartland, Sharlayan sent the Au Ra scientist Anggir to Mamook to oversee the farming initiative, which was overseen by Doppro Mamool Ja Ruvoll Ja. With the Warrior's assistance, Anggir's research allowed the Mamool Ja to establish Golma Gok, a garden that could grow vegetables and fruits other than Ja Tiika bananas in Mamook. When it seemed they had reached their limit, since Ja Tiika Heartlands had difficulty of gaining sunlight, they needed new perspectives. Ruvoll Ja, Anggir and the Warrior visited Heritage Found to learn, how its inhabitants are able to grow food in their desolate environment. Their electrope machinery allowed them to use lightning energy to create artificial light and rain over their fields. This helped Ruvoll Ja to see that Boonewa magicks can do the same. The Warrior collected a suitable material for light apparatuses, that are then empowered by Boonewa magicks. Zereel Ja arrived unannounced to see their efforts, and he was impressed, and agreed to empower the apparatuses. With this, Mamook's range of what they can grow expanded significantly, and Zereel Ja was most pleased.
After Ruvoll Ja approached Iq'Braax in order for the Xbr'aal and Mamool Ja to share their bounties, a feast was held, in which Zereel Ja met Hunmu Rruk. Zereel Ja apologized of his actions and their animosity. It was here that Hunmu Rruk revealed to Zereel Ja that his daughter had survived the attempt on her life, and it was here when Zereel Ja realized Hunmu Rruk was talking about Wuk Lamat, and a big weight on his heart he had carried for years was unlifted, as he was happy she had survived.
