A SeeD candidate studying at Balamb Garden, Zell is known as a hot-headed young man who lets passion guide his actions, with reason taking a back seat. Though small in stature, his relentless physical training has turned him into a true dynamo.
Zell is a playable character in Final Fantasy Record Keeper who can be recruited as the First Time Reward for completing Galbadia Garden, Part 3 on the Classic difficulty in the realm FF VIII of the core dungeons. He could also be recruited during the Challenge Event Gunblade of the Sorceress as the First Time Reward for completing the event's stage SeeD Field Exam, Part 3 in In the Garden track. He has also appeared in A Meeting Beyond Time and Broken Chains as a supporting character.
Zell joins a long line of Monks that includes Josef, Refia, Sabin, and Tifa before him. Like a typical Monk, his HP, Attack, Defense, and Speed are his greatest assets, adding up to big firepower from a small package. His growth curve doesn't quite match Galuf's, but Zell has the potential to unleash devastating multiple-hit strikes where few others have yet to do the same or better.

His default Soul Break is Punch Rush which at the expense of one Soul Gauge segment deals damage to one target equal to 150% damage potency of a conventional attack. The fist Maverick (VIII) allows Zell to use Burning Rave which at the expense of one Soul Gauge segment deals physical damage to all enemies and temporarily raises Attack of all allies. The fist Crystal Glove (VIII), exclusive to Record Keeper, gives Zell access to the Super Soul Break Combat King, which for one Soul Gauge segment deals eight unfocused physical attacks to random enemies and gives Zell a small boost to Defense and Resistance; upon its mastery, Zell's Attack increases permanently by 10 points. The fist Burning Fist (VIII), also exclusive to Record Keeper, grants Zell the Burst Soul Break Duelist, which for one Soul Gauge segment deals ten instant, unfocused physical attacks to random targets and may cause Interrupt status, voiding affected targets' immediate pending turns, in addition to boosting the critical-hit rate of all allies; Zell also enters Burst Mode, in which he can execute one of two four-hit combos against one target: Headlong Rush drops Defense, but raises Attack; Lightning Reflexes removes the delay from Zell's next action. Upon mastery, Zell's Attack gains 10 points.
Upon breaking Zell's initial level cap, he acquires the Record Materia Untapped Power, which increases the wielder's Attack as s/he takes damage.
Zell can equip the following weapon types: daggers and fists. The fist Maverick (VIII) allows Zell to use Burning Rave. The fist Crystal Glove (VIII) unlocks Combat King. The fist Burning Fist (VIII) unlocks Duelist.
