Heretic scion who wrapped the world in dark energies, seeking to take the souls of all living things unto himself. Created in opposition to Emet-Selch, Angel of Truth, and scion of light. Originally tasked with the judging of men upon their deaths, his soul was tainted by the curses of those who raged against the heavens, and seizing one of the gods' servants, a shamaness, as a hostage, he rebelled against his creators. Even now, in defeat, he clutches the shamaness to him in his right arm, and with the aid of her death-wail does he summon the soul of darkness to do his bidding.

Zalera the Death Seraph is an optional level one Esper in Final Fantasy XII. He is fought in the Barheim Passage.

Zalera's license costs 25 LP, and he requires one Mist Charge to summon.

Profile[]

Zalera is associated with the zodiac sign of Gemini, the Twins. His element is death, and his color sign is violet. He is a hellish angel with a shamaness grafted onto his arm. He summons undead to fight alongside him. He is also referred to as the Mithuna Ascendant, which is the Sanskrit name of its zodiac sign as used in Jyotish (Hindu) astrology.

Zalera returns as a Non-Elemental Ranged Rank III summon in Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings where his nature is Holy.

Zalera is based on a Lucavi from Final Fantasy Tactics where he is known as the Angel of Death.

Obtained[]

Zalera is fought as an optional boss in the Barheim Passage, his existence being foreshadowed by non-player characters mentioning hearing a woman's screams from deep inside the tunnel. He fights by summoning Dead Bones to attack and using status attacks that hit depending on the levels of the party members. If the player cannot defeat Zalera within five minutes they are teleported out of the room and must begin the battle over.

Once defeated, Zalera's license can be purchased on the License Board for 25 LP.

Unlocked abilities in Zodiac versions[]

Esper licenses sometimes unlock licenses that could not otherwise be reached. Zalera's license will appear on all boards, but once chosen by a character, will disappear from all other boards. In The Zodiac Age version, the player can choose two license boards for each playable character, and activated licenses are activated on both boards if present.

Zalera allows access to the following licenses on these boards:

Battle[]

Zalera costs one Mist Charge to summon. In the original version, Zalera is immune against all elements but Holy, which he absorbs. In the Zodiac versions, Zalera no longer absorbs Holy and now takes normal damage from Holy-elemental attacks.

Abilities[]

Kill

Inflicts instant death on any enemy that does not have the Safety passive ability. An enemy slain by Kill does not yield Experience Points, License Points or loot.

Condemnation

Zalera's ultimate attack is Condemnation. Zalera warps the enemy to another world, and opens his right arm to reveal the shamaness who screams, calling a storm of dark clouds from which souls pour out and create twisters.

In the original version, Condemnation instantly kills all enemies with less than 9,999 max HP (6,999 HP for those with the Reduce Damage augment), and those with more are hit with non-elemental damage that can break the damage limit.

In the Zodiac versions, Condemnation deals random damage to all enemies in range.

Boss[]

Zalera is an optional boss fought in the Barheim Passage. Zalera must be defeated within 5 minutes or the party will be transported back to the Terminus 7 adjunct and will have to try again. Zalera will summon Dead Bones and resists all elemental attacks. Zalera has no abilities that do damage, relying instead on the Bones and status ailments. His Kill automatically KOs the target and Zalera will immediately use Kill to defeat any Espers the party summons. Since Zalera is undead, curative spells and items are effective, if the party can work around Zalera's Reflect status.

Other media[]

In Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers Emet-Selch's glyph mask before the final encounter with him is almost identical to Zalera's glyph in Final Fantasy XII. In addition, the name "Emet-Selch" is referred to in Zalera's bio as the Angel of Truth.
