Hailing from the nation of Doma on the shores of Othard, Yugiri and her countrymen have fled their war-torn home and the oppression of Garlean rule in search of refuge.

With supplies and hopes for survival dwindling, Yugiri seeks council with Eorzea's leaders, that they too may call this land their home.

Yugiri Mistwalker is a character from Final Fantasy XIV, a female Au Ra Raen. Introduced in patch 2.2, she is a Ninja who leads a group of refugees that fled from Doma to Eorzea. Many of her fellow refugees note how she pushes herself for their cause. Due to the support vouched by Alphinaud Leveilleur and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, Yugiri pledges her assistance out of gratitude. She attempts to maintain a calm, even temperament, although sometimes her bewilderment at certain aspects of Eorzea gets the better of her.

History[]

Early life[]

Hien and Yugiri as kids

Yugiri meets Hien for the first time.

Yugiri was born in the Sui-no-Sato from Ihanami and Yunagi. As a girl she snuck away from home to see the wonders of Doma, only to discover a ruin occupied by imperial soldiers. As she fled, she lost her way and found the young Hien Rijin, prince of Doma, practicing with a wooden katana in a bamboo grove. Inspired by his desire to protect his people, she joined him each day to practice. One day when he left early, she secretly followed him to the Swallow's Compass, where he snuck past the Garlean guards into the forbidden temple. Yugiri followed only to set off one of the temple's magical sentries. Though Hien destroyed it to save her, they were both caught by the guards and would have been executed but for the interference of his father's retainer, Gosetsu Daito.

Though Yugiri wished to protect both Doma and Sui-no-Sato from the horrors of the Empire, her people staunchly refused to get involved. She left her village in search of the strength to fight the Garleans, and found it through the way of the shinobi. The Ruby Princess in turn exiled her, out of fear that the war would follow her if she returned. Through years of training she reached the rank of jonin, and having mastered the ninjutsu, received the epithet "Mistwalker". She was dispatched to assist the Doman Liberation Front, serving both Lord Kaien and his son Hien alongside Gosetsu. The war ended with Kaien's death and the fall of Doma. Obeying the orders of her lord, Yugiri led several refugees on a long and arduous journey to find a new home for them.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn[]

Yugiri Kasasagi Kikyo

Yugiri arrives in Vesper Bay with Kasasagi and Kikyo.

Yugiri arrived in Eorzea and requested to meet the leader to the bemused citizens in the Vesper Bay village. Urianger Augurelt overheard the commotion outside the Waking Sands and relayed this to the other Scions of the Seventh Dawn members, who requested the Warrior of Light to investigate. They found her being turned away at the Royal Promenade of Ul'dah. Alphinaud Leveilleur overheard her story, and invited her and the Warrior of Light to discuss it at the Quicksand. Yugiri explained she was from a galleon of Doman refugees, a vassal of the Garlean Empire. A war of succession had broken out, implying that Emperor Solus zos Galvus had passed away. Doma had attempted to revolt only to be put down by other Garlean forces and razed as a warning to other nations, the survivors fleeing across the sea in galleons.

Alphinaud arranged a meeting with the sultana and the Syndicate. While Yugiri's plea for sanctuary was endorsed by Teledji Adeledji, it was declined by a majority vote due to lingering distrust of the Ala Mhigan refugees that had been invited years ago. Discussing the matter with Raubahn Aldynn and Teledji Adeledji at the Hall of Flames, Alphinaud suggested the refugees could be relocated to Revenant's Toll in Mor Dhona, which had ample room, in exchange for frontier work. Teledji agreed to foot the bill for transporting them, while Minfilia Warde made arrangements with the Adventurer's Guild.

FFXIV Thancred & Yugiri

Thancred and Yugiri battling the sahagins.

In gratitude for their support, Yugiri pledged her blade to the Scions' cause, and accompanied them to investigate the reawakening of Leviathan. During the confrontations with the Sahagin, she demonstrated a proficiency with blades that resembled Thancred's knife skills. Minfilia later confirmed Thancred's less savory history with Limsa Lominsa's underground where he had learned his skills, and arranged for Yugiri (and the Warrior of Light) to meet with this shadowy guild. Intrigued, Yugiri promised to teach the Eorzeans her combat style, hoping to run a dojo someday.

Yugiri

Yugiri unmasked.

When the Scions were betrayed by the Crystal Braves and framed for the assassination of Sultana Nanamo Ul Namo, Yugiri rescued Tataru and brought her to Camp Dragonhead in Coerthas to join with the Warrior of Light and Alphinaud. Her mask was torn off, revealing her face. She promised to use the Doman ninjas' resources to assist the remaining Scions.

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]

FFXIV Yugiri Halatali

Yugiri accompanies the surviving Scions to rescue Raubahn at Halatali.

Yugiri and her shinobi helped the Warrior of Light and Alphinaud investigate the location of Raubahn Aldynn's prison and discovered he was imprisoned in Halatali. Yugiri accompanied the Warrior and Alphinaud in battling the Crystal Braves led by Ilberd Feare and they freed Raubahn from the dungeon.

Yugiri returned to aid the Scions in investigating the Griffin's plot to attack Baelsar's Wall. She accompanied Yda and Papalymo as they infiltrated secret tunnels underneath the Wall to try to reason with the Griffin. While on the way, the Griffin launched the attack, and Alphinaud realized it was a false flag operation due the attackers wearing Grand Company uniforms. Alphinaud rushed off to warn them as the Warrior of Light assaulted Castrum Oriens to climb the Wall.

Yugiri and the Scions caught up to the Warrior of Light as they defeated the Griffin, who revealed himself to be Ilberd. As Ilberd summoned a great primal above the Wall, Yugiri and the others escaped as Papalymo sacrificed himself to seal away the primal in a cocoon of light. Yugiri later joined Y'shtola Rhul and a grief-stricken Yda to monitor the sealed primal

Gosetsu sailed to Eorzea in search of Yugiri and asked her to return to Doma because her services were needed to help assist their mutual master, but she refused because she still had work to do in Eorzea. Gosetsu joined Yugiri and helped the Scions in activating the Omega and repelling Shinryu. Later Gosetsu and Yugiri lamented the dire state of the war against the Empire. Rallying their spirits, they turned their eyes eastward in the coming fight to liberate their home.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood[]

After Yugiri and Gosetsu arrived in Othard, she left on a mission to find Lord Hien. She returned to House of the Fierce and met with the Warrior of Light, Gosetsu, Alisaie, Alphinaud, and Lyse Hext. Yugiri revealed she had found Hien in Azim Steppe, but he refused to return unless his people wanted to turn against the Empire.

FFXIV Yugiri vs Zenos

Zenos parries Yugiri's attack.

Later Yugiri and Warrior of Light rescued the villagers summoned by the Empire and the words of an elder and Yugiri raised their morale. Thoughtful of recent events, Yugiri explained her motives for the Warrior of Light, but the conversation was cut short when an imperial airship was sighted heading in the direction of Doma Castle. The imperial airship brought Zenos yae Galvus (the crown prince of the Garlean Empire), and even in a disagreement with Gosetsu, Yugiri decided use the opportunity to assassinate him from the shadows. As Zenos passed through the village, Yugiri and Warrior of Light tried ambush him, but Yugiri's attack was parried and Zenos defeated both easily. As Zenos was about to finish them off, the villagers raised their weapons against him, and Alisaie and Gosetsu appeared to the rescue.

Once his people decided to raise their weapons against the Empire, Yugiri, Gosetsu, Lyse, and the Warrior of Light made their way to Azim Steppe in search of Lord Hien. With the help of Cirina Mol, a friend of Hien, the group met him and Yugiri reported on recent events. Respecting the decision of his people, Hien finally decidesdto return to Yanxia.

Yugiri participated in the battle at Doma Castle and witnessed Gosetsu's sacrifice. Once Doma was freed, Yugiri returned to Eorzea, and alongside Hien, assisted in liberating Ala Mhigo. Yugiri stayed by Hien's side and located Gosetsu, who had survived and was with an amnesiac Yotsuyu. When the Garlean Empire sent Asahi sas Brutus as ambassador to negotiate with Doma, Yugiri followed the negotiations that were part of Asahi's machinations to get Yotsuyu to summon the primal Tsukuyomi. After witnessing the summoning, Yugiri was present during the return of the prisoners of war and the farewell of Gosetsu.

In search for missing Alphinaud, Yugiri accompanied Hien, Alisaie, Y'shtola, and the Warrior of Light to the Burn. She identified the imperial coat on the Garlean soldiers' bodies there, and attended the meeting that decided to form an alliance of the eastern nations. Yugiri, alongside Hakuro, departed to make the proposal to the other factions.

FFXIV Yugiri vs Elidibus

Yugiri vs Elidibus.

Once Garlemald began its attack on Ala Mhigan borders, Yugiri participated in the battle, and alongside Hien and Lyse faced Elidibus, the Ascian in possession of Zenos's body. The party was easily defeated and were evacuated from the battlefield while the Warrior engaged the enemy.

After the fighting at Ghimlyt died down, Yugiri accompanied Hien back to Doma where he organized the Eastern Alliance. She was briefly seen when Hien was introducing the Warrior to the Bozjan Resistance envoy.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]

Yugiri joined Hien and the Warrior of Light in tracking a blasphemy born from a woman in the village of Isari: Minato. Attempting to ascertain the state of affairs, the trio found the villagers not amenable to Lord Hien, so Yugiri disguised herself as a peasant to gather information with the Warrior of Light asking the villagers on their own part. Yugiri and the Warrior of Light discovered that the villagers had taken to calling the beast "Izanami", believing her to be a kami made manifest thanks to the girl's stepmother, Kisei, who also performed fake seances to convince the villagers of this, as well as excuse any murders perpetuated by the blasphemy as appeasing the spirits of the deceased.

Suspecting that the girl's mother may have come from Sui-no-Sato, Yugiri asked the Kojin to make inquiries. When their inquiries were rebuffed, she suggested traveling there herself alongside the Warrior of Light. She told the Warrior of her banishment, which would necessitate going in disguise, but admitted that she did not begrudge the Ruby Princess her decision. They learned that Yugiri's mother, Yunagi, had been friends with Kisei many years ago, and that Kisei from a young age appeared to have been possessed by spirits of the dead, though it was unclear if she actually had any mediumship abilities. Kisei herself had been banished by the previous Ruby Princess after she had attempted to ascertain the truth. Yunagi asked the disguised Yugiri to tell her daughter that her parents were proud of her.

After a failed attempt at catching the blasphemy, Yugiri and the others returned to the Doman Enclave only to find the villagers of Isari demanding the returned conscripts be rendered unto them so that Izanami might murder them. Hien dissuaded the villagers, but Kisei pressed further. Gosetsu interrupted the group when returning from his pilgrimige, and offered proof that Kisei's spirit-channeling was fake. Embarrassed but undeterred Kisei left, vowing revenge.

Yugiri accompanied Hien in preparing a ceremonial funeral in Swallow's Compass for all those lost to the war to appease the people who still had not received closure. Kisei came to apologize, kneeling before Hien. While he extended a hand in acceptance, Kisei attempted to assassinate him only to be felled by Yugiri. The blasphemy itself arrived, lured there by its former mother. Forced to confront the beast, Yugiri, Hien, and the Warrior of Light struggled until Gosetsu appeared, wielding healing magicks he had learned on his travels and the group slayed the beast.

Following the blasphemy's death, the funeral ceremony proceeded as planned and Yugiri and the group returned to the Doman Enclave.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Yugiri is a Raen Au Ra with fair skin and pearl white scales and talons. During her time as a refugee in Eorzea, she often wears light shinobi garbs. During the mission to liberate Doma, Yugiri wears light chain mail and armor fit for a ninja, a custom-colored version of the Level 70 Ninja relic gear. Upon her introduction, Yugiri often wore a black mask whenever interacting with others.

Though Yugiri wears the Level 70 Ninja relic gear in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, it features a unique color scheme that cannot be replicated with dyes.

Personality[]

Yugiri Mistwalker is quiet, honorable, humble yet decisive and determined, a pinnacle of what a ninja should be. Though she bears great sadness in the fall of her homeland, she remained true to her lord's command in safeguarding the refugees from occupied Doma. Though she found a second home in Eorzea, specifically the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, Yugiri longs to return to her homeland.

Eternally grateful to the Scions for taking her people in, Yugiri strives to honor their kindness by aiding them in whatever they need and refuses to return home until her mission with the Warrior of Light in Eorzea is complete.

Upon her return to Doma, Yugiri is saddened to see her people so fearful and broken as a result of the Garlean occupation. Though Yugiri attempts to light the fires of rebellion within the people, her attempts are met with depression and anger, shattering her dream of a rebellion to free Doma. However, her dedication and loyalty to Doma inspire the people to stand up to the Empire.

Yugiri is steadfastly loyal to her master, Lord Hien, seeing him Doma's rightful leader. Since the liberation, Yugiri has become Hien's eye's and ears, if not right-hand woman.

Behind the scenes[]

Because the Au Ra character models were not ready even for demonstration until December 2014, while patch 2.2 was released some nine months prior, on a technical level the model used to represent Yugiri in her appearances in patches 2.2 and 2.4 is actually that of a heavily-modified female Miqo'te, using a custom-built tail, gloves, tunic, and headpiece. The headpiece ensures no facial expressions are obvious, but Yugiri's general posture, idle, and talk animations used the standard Miqo'te animation skeleton. Even with her face revealed, in 2.55 she still used a Miqo'te animation skeleton; in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, she began using a true Au Ra model. Datamining the files revealed that beneath her veil was that of a Miqo'te with Yugiri's unique hairstyle.

The art released in December 2014 for the Au Ra features a different design for the tail compared to Yugiri's placeholder model, suggesting that some design changes for the Au Ra may have occurred between 2.2's release and the formal Au Ra reveal at Tokyo Fan Fest nine months later.

A slight "flop" in Yugiri's horns was noted when she moved in 2.2, leading many to suspect they were ears rather than horns. The Au Ra horns are rigid, including on Yugiri unmasked, and the "floppiness" of her horns has since been fixed.

The line spoken by Yugiri when she first sees Leviathan, "Heavens forfend!", resembles a line spoken by Y'shtola when she sees a giant sea serpent during the opening cutscene for Limsa Lominsa in 1.0.

Voice[]

In the English version, Yugiri was voiced by Paulette Ivory in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. She was voiced by Sian Blake in the initial launch of the Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward expansion. Following Blake's death in December 2015, Yugiri is voiced by Eleanor Matsuura as of 3.5.

Yugiri is voiced by Rina Satō in the Japanese version.
