Yoshiyuki is a weapon for Cloud in Final Fantasy VII, which can be obtained in Rocket Town. Though its Attack stat is seemingly low, its power doubles if an ally is dead, and triples if two are dead. The weapon has two Materia slots. The player can equip it to Cloud or throw it, or sell it for 2,100 gil.
Obtained[]
Yoshiyuki can be obtained in Rocket Town in by talking twice to the man who watches the rocket, earliest done during "A Sleeping Village Dreaming of Outer Space". It can no longer be obtained after defeating Carry Armor in "Clash in the Deep Sea".
Mechanics[]
As the Yoshiyuki has a base Attack stat bonus of 56, the base damage for physical attacks when it is equipped is the following formula:
where "Level" is Cloud's current level and "Strength" is his Strength stat. When an ally is dead, all damage dealt at the end is doubled; when two allies are dead, it is tripled:
Yoshiyuki also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 100%, and grants a +9 bonus to Cloud's Magic stat when casting spells.
Use[]
Yoshiyuki appears to have a middling Attack stat, and in most circumstances, deals medium damage. However, when an ally is dead, it can deal significant physical damage, allowing Cloud to turn the tide of a fight. This makes it high risk, but also high reward. Yoshiyuki has only two unlinked Materia slots.
Yoshiyuki is situationally very powerful, but in most situations is outclassed. The main drawback is that it is often best not to allow an ally to die, or when one is dead, to revive them as quick as possible. This would mean that Cloud would rarely get to take advantage of its effect. Yoshiyuki also has very few Materia slots, meaning that the player would not be able to equip many Magic or Summon Materia, and thus, not be able to benefit much from Cloud's Magic stat. However, they can still equip Command Materia that take advantage of the extra damage by Yoshiyuki's effects, such as Slash-All or Deathblow. It can also be a good weapon for the Wutai sidequest where the player must go on without Materia for a time.
Later on, Yoshiyuki is outclassed by more powerful weapons, such as Ragnarok and Ultima Weapon, which can more reliably do high amounts of physical damage, without sacrificing Materia slots.
Etymology[]
Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki (陸奥守吉行, 1650-1710) was a Japanese swordsmith born in Mutsu Province. His blade was made famous after Sakamoto Ryōma was assassinated and died carrying his favorite blade forged by Yoshiyuki. Yoshiyuki's title was changed to "Tosa Yoshiyuki" (土佐吉行) when he moved to Tosa Province.
