This is Yggdrasil, the tree of life. It's a holy tree, and its life force is entwined with that of the world. Eradia gives Yggdrasil the power to grow. As the three grows stronger, so, too, does the world. With enough Eradia, you can extend its life and push back the day of destruction. Up to thirteen days, after which God awakens.

Sacred Tree Yggdrasil.

Yggdrasil (聖樹ユグドラシル, Seiju Yugudorashiru?), also known as the "tree of life", is a key object in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, located in the Ark within the new Cocoon, Bhunivelze.

When given Eradia, Yggdrasil enables Lightning to extend the lifespan of the world of Nova Chrysalia to the maximum thirteen day limit, and delay the Apocalypse. Each of the Yggdrasil's fruit-like structures represents a day. Despite the limit being thirteen days, Lightning can extend the lifespan of Nova Chrysalia to the fourteenth day, if she gives enough Eradia to Yggdrasil to bloom six times, which equals to six additional days, to reach Day 13. However, Yggdrasil can bloom seven times: five orbs will bloom on the tree's stem, then the tree's flower blooms partially, and finally, the tree's flower blooms completely into an orb. In-game, this means completing all five Main Quests and forty Side Quests; the Canvas of Prayers' quests do not count toward this, as they do not give Eradia.

If the player gains the fourteenth day, they can access Ultimate Lair.

Etymology and origin[]

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is an immense tree that is central in Norse cosmology, in connection to which the nine worlds exist.

The world tree is a motif present in several religions and mythologies, particularly Indo-European religions, Siberian religions, and Native American religions. The world tree is represented as a colossal tree which supports the heavens, thereby connecting the heavens, the terrestrial world, and, through its roots, the underworld. It may also be strongly connected to the motif of the tree of life.
