Scarf that raises Strength.

Description

The Yellow Scarf is an early add-on in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip. It teaches Bird Killer, which increases damage to bird- and flying-type enemies; Millionaire, which lets the party gain more gil from enemies; and Steal Gil that allows Zidane gain some gil alongside successful steals. The Yellow Scarf gives a bonus to the wearer's Strength when they level up with it equipped.

Obtain[]

The Yellow Scarf is synthesized in Lindblum, Treno, Black Mage Village, and Alexandria (after getting Blue Narciss) for 400 gil, a Feather Hat, and a Steepled Hat; the hats are both sold in Black Mage Village but there are various ways to get them, allowing the player to synthesize the scarf at the earliest opportunity.

The scarf is also found in Cleyra's cathedral CleyraCathedral2. It can also be unequipped from Beatrix on during the Battle of Alexandria.

Mechanics[]

The Yellow Scarf gives Magic Defense +1 and a +2 bonus to the wearer's Strength stat when they level with it equipped. When enough "bonuses" upon level up from gear have been accrued, the character gains a permanent stat increase. Strength is used for damage calculations and for determining HP growth.

Use[]

The Yellow Scarf has two good abilities to learn. Bird Killer is the best Killer ability, as it works against various flying enemies that do not need to be birds, and notably works against the superbosses Ozma and Hades and all final bosses. Millionaire is good for Quina to equip when they have the Magic Stones to spare. Steal Gil, meanwhile, is not worthwhile to equip as the yields are so paltry.

The scarf's level up bonus is good for an early game add-on. However, level grinding and min-maxing are unnecessary for a normal playthrough even when preparing for superboss encounters; the player can view any extra stats as simply a nice bonus. The best stat-boosting items are available at the end of the game, and so for the best stats one would need to restrict their EXP intake until near the end of the game.
