Yang is a playable character in Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy IV -Interlude- and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. He is a Monk who fights with his fists and is able to attack multiple targets and boost his damage output with his martial arts skills.
Final Fantasy IV[]
Stats[]
As a monk, Yang has high HP and physical stats. There is a bug concerning Yang's HP growth which affects all SNES versions as well as the North American and first Japanese Advance versions, where Yang's HP growth stops at level 60 and he can never reach 9999 HP. The bug is fixed in the European GBA version and the re-released Japanese GBA version.

In the 3D remakes, Yang is the only character to gain Attack points when he levels up. He begins with 30 at level 20 and gains 15 points every 10 levels to reach 105 at level 70 and caps at 148 at level 99. His attack can be calculated with the following formula:
When he rejoins the party in Baron, his level and equipment will be the same as before Leviathan sank the ship.
Abilities[]
Yang and Edge use a different Attack formula from the rest of the party members, as they can dual-wield weapons. When Yang uses the Attack command, the damage dealt is equal to Yang's Level +1, multiplied by 2, added to Yang's Strength stat divided by 4. The weapons Yang uses have no effect as they all have 0 Attack power naturally.
Yang's primary ability is Kick, where he executes an attack on all enemies that does slightly less damage than a normal Attack. Yang's other abilities are Focus and Brace. Focus in the 2D releases has Yang skip his turn to charge up an attack twice as strong as normal. In the Advance and Complete Collection releases, Yang can equip the Discipline Armband to upgrade his Focus command into Deadly, which increases his damage multiplier to 3x instead of 2x. Brace greatly reduces the damage Yang takes from enemies, more than the normal Defend command.
In the 3D releases, Kick has higher power and takes on the elemental and status properties of Yang's claws. Focus functions entirely different: Yang charges up energy, enhancing the power of either his next normal attack or Kick. Focus can be stacked up to three times with consecutive uses. In the original North American release of the Super NES version, both Focus and Brace were removed.
In the 2D versions Yang has a slightly different victory pose to the default pose: he puts one leg forward and one palm toward the enemy repeatedly. In the 3D versions he stretches and takes a bow at the end of a victorious battle, and when he levels up, he will punch the air.
Equipment[]
Yang's armor draw is limited to hats, clothes, armlets and rings. Yang's weapon draw is limited to claws, which have low battle power. However, as Yang maintains a high battle power even barehanded, his claws add elemental and status properties to his attacks rather than increase his strength. This allows Yang to switch his claws to change the properties of his attacks without sacrificing damage output.
In the 2D versions, he joins with Flame Claws on his right hand and Leather Clothing the first time, and with Leather Clothing the second time.
In the 3D remake, he joins with a Kenpo Gi and an Iron Armlet.
