The Xbox One is the successor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console. It was officially unveiled on May 21, 2013. The system was released in North America and several European countries on November 22, 2013.

Overview

One of the first consoles of the eighth-generation era, the Xbox One competes with both the PlayStation 4 and the Switch. As it is built from a similar hardware base to the PS4, many game titles are released concurrently on both units. Unlike the PS4 or the earlier Wii U, however, it does not run a custom UI, and instead runs a modification of Microsoft Windows as its main firmware. In so doing, the Xbox One has access to a library of "universalized" Windows application software as well as the ability to manage a virtual machine (VM) for games played on the system. Like the PS4, it offers the ability to record and stream live gameplay. Like the Wii U, it provides backward compatibility with its direct predecessor.

As with the Xbox 360, the Xbox One is supported online by Microsoft's Xbox Live suite of services. Some games' online features require a Gold subscription.

Enhanced versions

As with many of its closest competitors, the Xbox One also underwent a number of enhancements since its original run. In the Fall of 2016, the Xbox One S was introduced. This version of the console competes directly with the PS4's Pro model in that it also supports emerging 4K Ultra HD (UHD) standards. A further enhanced variant, the Xbox One X, was released in early November 2017. A third variant, the Digital Edition, was released in 2019 and does not include a Blu-ray drive, being targeted at users who purchase and play games exclusively online.
