The Wutai Area is a region of the world map in Final Fantasy VII located on the northwest of the western island of the world. Its main area of interest is Wutai (and its Da-chao Statue, and the entire island is important for the "Homecoming of a Miserable Daughter" optional chapter, when the player has recruited Yuffie.
Quests[]
Homecoming of a Miserable Daughter[]
Arriving in Wutai continent with Yuffie recruited triggers "Homecoming of a Miserable Daughter", an event where the party loses their Materia. The sidequest can be started after obtaining the Tiny Bronco. With the Tiny Bronco the player can only enter Wutai from the beach, and will have to travel from the south entrance of the Wutai Area to the north with their top 48 Materia missing. If the player has the Highwind this can be avoided.
As the Wutai area houses the enemy skill Magic Hammer, taking on this sidequest can be more rewarding if done sooner rather than later. Tents can be used to heal everyone on the world map, so the player can stock up on them while in Rocket Town.
Chocobo catching[]
There is an area with Chocobo footprints where the party can encounter a Chocobo if they have the Chocobo Lure Materia.
- Enemy formations
- Chocobo (LV30), Tail Vault x2 [Battle diagonal mode] (Poor)
- Razor Weed x3, Chocobo (LV30) (Poor)
- Chocobo (LV30), Tail Vault x3[note 1] (Average)
- Chocobo (LV30), Tail Vault x2 [Battle front mode] (Average)
If the player kills the enemies accompanying the Chocobo before the latter flees, they capture the bird and can ride it around Wutai Area. During the battle the party can give the bird some greens to prevent it from fleeing. If the player has rented stables at the Chocobo Farm, they can send the Chocobo there and have Choco Billy evaluate it. The Chocobos from Wutai Area are either "Poor" or "Average" and thus not worth breeding or racing.
Mime Materia[]
If the party has a green, black or gold Chocobo, they can reach a Materia Cave with a Mime Materia inside. The Materia Cave is on the world map in the Wutai Area, blocked by mountainous terrain so it cannot be accessed on foot or by Highwind. The Mime Materia that can be collected inside gives the Mimic command that copies the last ability the party performed.
Enemy Skills[]
There are two enemy skills to be learned for the Enemy Skill Materia from the Wutai Area. Razor Weeds are fought on the grassy areas and have Magic Hammer, a useful Enemy Skill that absorbs MP from opponents. Since Razor Weed will not use Magic Hammer by itself, one must first manipulate it and then have it cast Magic Hammer on the party member with the Enemy Skill Materia.
Adamantaimai are fought on the beaches. Adamantaimai has access to the Death Force Enemy Skill, but it will never cast it in battle. To learn the spell, one must manipulate the Adamantaimai and then force it to cast the spell on the character with the Enemy Skill Materia. Death Force makes one target immune to Instant Death until the end of battle.
During the Pagoda side quest in Wutai Village, the player can also learn Trine from Godo. It is best not to miss it as there are finite opportunities to learn it.

The Wutai Area on the world map has various random encounters. Random encounters do not trigger on the bridges.
Behind the scenes[]
The bridges in the Wutai Area have no battles, and the player cannot open the menu when standing on a bridge. It appears this was not originally intended; the game has a set of formations assigned to that area with the bridge background. It is likely that the developers simply disabled menu and battle transitions on bridges to prevent the game from potentially soft-locking. Crossing the bridges causes them to sway, and the variable for their position is not saved when the game changes from one module to another, so they must be returned to their default positions. If the player were to open the menu or enter a battle while standing on a bridge, upon returning to the world map, they might be moved to an inaccessible location and find themselves unable to progress.
