A close-combat weapon capable of pulverizing enemies with a sphere of solid steel.

Description

The Wrecking Ball is a melee weapon for Barret in Final Fantasy VII Remake. It provides Barret the Smackdown ability, which takes a while to charge up, but can deal heavy area-of-effect damage to vulnerable enemies. Its proficiency bonus comes from striking three or more enemies at once.

The weapon provides the highest Attack Power Attack Power attribute of any of Barret's weapons, along with several abilities that make Barret suited towards physical damage-per-second. Compared to Steel Pincers Steel Pincers, Barret's other melee weapon, it provides more damage, but heavily compromises Barret's spellcasting potential, with a low Magic Magic attribute.

Obtained[]

Wrecking Ball obtained from Wymer from FFVII Remake

Wymer gives out the weapon.

Barret wins the weapon for completing "Subterranean Menace" in Chapter 14, "In Search of Hope", in which the party must defeat the Type-0 Behemoth. If missed, the weapon is for sale in the Shinra Building.

Wrecking Ball artwork for FFVII Remake

Wrecking Ball provides Barret tremendous physical damage potential. As a melee weapon, it changes Barret's playstyle towards dealing slow but strong area-of-effect physical damage, compromising his ability to hit single targets from a distance. Though this lack of versatility hinders Barret's role as a tank for the party, as he will be under fire more often, Barret's Steelskin ability still makes him effective at sustaining damage, and many of the abilities provided by Wrecking Ball further increase Barret's durability as well as his physical damage potential.

The Wrecking Ball is Barret's strongest weapon for dealing pure physical damage. Its main drawbacks come from its low magic attribute, making Barret a poor spellcaster, and it being a melee weapon limits Barret's ability to focus on targets at a distance while drawing fire away from the party. Big Bertha Big Bertha has the closest comparable attack power attribute boost of any of Barret's ranged weapons, and may instead be used for ranged single target damage as opposed to Wrecking Ball's melee damage, while the Steel Pincers can be used to take advantage of Barret in a physical damage role without harming his melee potential.

Wrecking Ball locks Barret into a role of dealing melee area-of-effect damage, but excels at it. With the weapon, Barret can become a physical damage powerhouse, making it useful when facing enemies who resist magical damage but are susceptible to physical damage, or if the player is using the other party members for different roles. The problem with Wrecking Ball is that it focuses Barret so heavily towards one role, while taking away his role as a ranged attacker, that its use is niche.
