Battle[]
The wrath hound is a unique and powerful variant of the Guard Dog. It boasts very high stats, specially offensive ones. It is a bulky opponent that is difficult to pin down due to it resisting interruption and stagger.
Much like its weaker counterpart, the Wrath Hound is an agile beast that can tackle its opponents, as well as perform a three-hit physical attack, with the first attack stronger than the succeeding ones. It can lunge at the player, who may be caught off guard if the enemy is out of camera shot.
The wrath hound can perform a stronger version of the Guard Dog's Whirlwhip, called Tentacle Whip, which covers more range and deals moderate damage. Its Throat Clamp is a dangerous attack, where it lunges at its opponent, binding them on the ground and biting repeatedly, dealing massive damage. Lastly, they can attack with Headbutt, dealing moderate damage and knocking characters down, unless they're blocking.
Like most biological creatures, the wrath hound is weak against Ice. If hit by ice magic, the it'll will go on a rampage, enveloped by a red aura, becoming far more aggressive than normal and moving even faster.
During the fight against the hound in the odd job "On the Prowl", it'll flee after taking a set amount of damage, and will be later cornered by Wymer.
Strategy[]
Since it is a sturdy opponent hard to interrupt and moves around a lot, Blizzard needs to be timed properly, or it will miss. As the wrath hound's actions are difficult to interrupt, it is recommended to outflank it to get out of the reach of its attacks. Blocking is recommended against its consecutive attacks. Cloud can easily retaliate with while in Punisher Mode.
Should one of the party members get bound by Throat Clamp, it is recommended to swap to the other character and hit the wrath hound with abilities or spells. Punisher Mode cannot counter Throat Clamp, since it is a grab attack.
One of the most effective ways to deal with the wrath hound is to wait until it uses Throat Clamp; dodging it while issuing another character to use ice magic can quickly catch it off guard, leaving the hound pressured, meaning it'll be susceptible to staggering. Cloud can use Focused Thrust to also stagger it faster. When it is staggered, Tifa's attacks, especially while at max chi, can be used to raise its stagger bonus damage.
Hard Mode[]
On the hard difficulty, the wrath hound is overall more aggressive and is much harder to flinch. It'll also use Headbutt and Throat Clamp more often.
The player can link an Elemental Materia with Ice Materia to both Cloud's and Tifa's weapons to exploit its weakness. Skill Master Materia and ATB Assist Materia are both also useful to quickly build up ATB. Cloud is highly effective against the hound thanks to Punisher Mode's counter and Counterstance, the latter capable of instantly pressuring the wrath hound. Tifa can be equipped with Synergy Materia and Ice Materia to follow-up Cloud's skills with magic and quickly stagger it.
Once the hound is staggered, Cloud can use Infinity's End while Tifa uses a combination of attacks and True Strike to raise the stagger bonus over 200%.
Episode INTERmission[]
Yuffie should use Ice Ninjutsu to target the dog's weakness, but throwing her weapon makes the hound rampage. A well timed Brumal Form can avoid the dog's attacks while also refunding ATB. Yuffie can used a fully powered up Banishment when it is ready, which is especially potent if Yuffie used Ice Ninjutsu first.
When faced later on in the chapter, Sonon accompanies Yuffie, and can draw the dog's ire away from Yuffie. He can also use Synergy paired with Ice to pelt it with magic. When the pair is synergized, both can attack the hound with ice ninjutsu when Yuffie's weapon is thrown.
