Throwing weapon, more powerful than the Rising Sun. It is used with the command 'Throw' and cannot be equipped.
Description
The Wing Edge is a throwing weapon for Amarant in Final Fantasy IX. It is used via Throw and consumed upon use, but is stronger than using Attack. It is the strongest throwing ring, surpassing the Pinwheel and the Rising Sun. The Wing Edge can be used for synthesis.
Amarant's Wing Edge is based on the weapon of the same name for Locke from Final Fantasy VI.
Obtain[]
The Wing Edge is found on the field in the following locations: Esto Gaza (back of the shop
), Mount Gulug (go down rope from a well, then right to an area with a moogle called Moolan
, the treasure is in the corner to the right), and Bran Bal (chest behind Moorock the moogle
).
Uncultivated Land chocograph.
Wing Edges are also found in two chocographs: Uncultivated Land and Forbidden Forest
. Though the Uncultivated Land chocograph is found early, the treasure cannot be dug up until Choco is at least mountain-crossing (it is near to where Evil Forest was and the party cannot go back there through the Ice Cavern any more once the chocobo quest can be started).
The Wing Edge is also a rare find when playing Chocobo Hot and Cold.
The Wing Edge is also stolen from Kraken's right tentacle and the crystal Tiamat (it is both the rare and very rare steal), and drops from the actual Tiamat prior to that, as well as many other late game bosses: Silver Dragon, Nova Dragon, Hades, and Deathguise.
Mechanics[]
Throw deals physical non-elemental damage to one enemy. The Wing Edge's damage is calculated as follows:
- Base = 64 * 2 - Enemy's Defense
- Bonus = Strength + Rnd MOD ([(Level + Strength) / 8] + 1)
- Damage = Base * Bonus
Bonus is reduced to 1 if Amarant is in Mini status, and is halved on a target with the Protect status. The Bonus will be 50% greater if the target is an aerial enemy, or if Amarant is equipped with the Power Throw ability. These effects also stack. If Amarant equips Healer, damage is converted to healing.
Use[]
The Wing Edge is good against tough enemies, like bosses, including the superbosses Ozma and Hades and the final bosses. The player can only buy them from Mene's shop from playing Chocobo Hot and Cold for 3,500 points; the rest must be found in the field and obtained as spoils from bosses. Though not bought from shops, they sell for 1500 gil apiece. The earliest Wing Edge the player can get is from Esto Gaza after the party has the Blue Narciss; it could be useful to throw against Ark if Amarant is sent to Oeilvert.
When thrown, the weapon's Attack value is doubled in the damage calculation, meaning they should be about twice as strong when used via Throw than when used with the Attack command. The Wing Edge's power surpasses Amarant's Attack command even with his best weapons. In the endgame, Amarant can also equip Power Throw to do supreme damage, though this hogs a sizeable portion of his Magic Stones. In many circumstances, Wing Edge is Amarant's best damage available, though he can also throw equipable weapons, such as buying Ultima Swords from Daguerreo.
One Wing Edge can be used in synthesis to make Battle Boots.
