The Wii U was a video game console from Nintendo and the successor to the Wii. It was released worldwide beginning in the Fall of 2012. It was succeeded by the Nintendo Switch in 2017.
About the console[]
Together with the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, the Wii U was an eighth-generation home console. It was Nintendo's twelfth game system overall, and its sixth home system.
Just as its predecessor was the first system to incorporate spatial motion controls, the Wii U was notable for its use of a multi-mode touchscreen gamepad as its primary controller, as well as being the first Nintendo console to natively support HD video output.
The Wii U is unique in that it offered a higher degree of backward compatibility than its competitors, as it was able to make use of Wii games and accessories in addition to providing a library of Virtual Console software spanning all the previous Nintendo hardware (both handheld and home consoles), except the Game Boy Color and GameCube (although downloading Nintendont allows GameCube games to be played), and Nintendo 3DS. Yet, in spite of such flexibility, no titles in the main Final Fantasy series had been released for the console outside of Japan.
Reception[]
The Wii U, according to a number of sources, was marred from the outset by several market factors, including, but not limited to, such things as brand confusion (thinking that the console was an extension of the Wii rather than a new unit), high price, a poor catalog of games, bad or difficult game design, and weak hardware compared to its closest rivals. Nintendo estimates having sold 13 million consoles, sharply lower than the Wii's 90 million units.
Production of the console was discontinued as of October 2016 in Europe, November 2016 in North America and Australia, and February 2017 in Japan, amid reports of lackluster reception[1][2]. The Wii U was succeeded by the Switch, a dockable tablet device released on March 3, 2017.
