Whirlwind Maze is an unrevisitable field map in Final Fantasy VII. Past the Crater, it is the main setting of "That Which Waits in the Northernmost Reaches". A few rare items are obtained here during the quest. There are parts of the maze where the player must dodge lightning bolts at the right time, or be knocked back and have to fight an enemy.

Crossing[]

Crossing.

On the first screen, after the first Sephiroth clone is encountered on the Whirlwind Maze, the Neo Bahamut Materia is dropped nearby. A save point is found halfway along the path.

Outermost Atmospheric Wall[]

The first of three similar challenges, in this screen, the atmospheric wall comprises a wind barrier. When the wind is calm, Cloud can pass unharmed. When the wind is raging, walking through will get Cloud knocked back and begin a fight with a Wind Wing. Cloud can be still amidst the wind while the wind is raging to wait for it to calm to proceed.

Winding Path[]

The third screen of the field contains a number of Sephiroth clones pasing through along the path. Halfway along is a chest containing Kaiser Knuckle.

Between Atmospheric Wall[]

The second challenge has a green flash running along its wall, requiring Cloud to dodge the flash as well as proceed while the wind is calm.

Rocky Path[]

On the fourth screen, a story sequence occurs and a battle with Jenova∙DEATH begins. Around this screen, a number of enemies can be encountered. Nearer the end of the screen, MP Turbo is found, and past the save point at the end of the screen, a Poison Ring is found in a chest.

Innermost Atmosphere Wall[]

The final screen of the area, the last wall is the same challenge as the second wall, where both a green flash and the wind must be dodged. Heading forward begins a series of story sequences concluding the quest.

Quests[]

The Whirlwind Maze is visited only during the main story quest "That Which Waits in the Northernmost Reaches". The quest is mostly a linear path through the area, culminating in a battle with Jenova∙DEATH and then story sequences. In the story sequences that follow, the player can choose to give Barret or Red XIII the Black Materia, but this will not affect the outcome. The dialogue in the story also changes somewhat based on the player's events during "The Tragedy of Five Years Ago".
