The Werepanther, also known as the Panther and the Were Cat, is an enemy from Final Fantasy II. It is a simple enemy that appears in small groups of one or two with other enemies. Its normal physical attacks may inflict Poison; however, it is not a threat.

Etymology[]
In folklore and fantasy fiction, were- is often used as a prefix applied to an animal name to indicate a type of lycanthropy and/or shapeshifter (e.g. "were-boar"). Hyphenation used to be mandatory but is now commonly dropped, as in werecat and wererat. This usage can be seen as a back-formation from werewolf (literally, "man-wolf"), as there is no equivalent wifewolf.
Panther is a mythological creature that resembles a big cat with a multicoloured hide. Under medieval belief, after feasting, the panther will sleep in a cave for three days, then roars emitting a sweet odor that draws in any creatures who smell it (the dragon being the only creature immune). They are eaten by the panther, and the cycle begins again.
The term panther may also refer to the big cats leopard, cougar or jaguar. Black and white variations also exist.

- In Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, there is a trade material called "Werecat Claw," a mistranslation of the Werepanther's name. The item's description warns it is coated in poison, referencing the Werepanther's normal attacks inflicting Poison.
