Menu description of the Cloud of Darkness's EX Burst, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

Wave Cannon (波動砲 or はどうほう, Hadōhō?), also known as Surge Beam, Surge Cannon, Beam Cannon, FlareWave, Particle Beam, Cannon, Wave Artillery, and Hyper, is a recurring enemy ability in the Final Fantasy series. It typically deals large amounts of damage to the entire party. It is most often associated with the Cloud of Darkness and Omega as their signature attacks.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy[]

Wave Cannon is used by Omega, and inflicts massive non-elemental damage to the entire party. It only appears in the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary versions.

Final Fantasy III[]

The Cloud of Darkness uses Particle Beam (FlareWave in the fan translation). It deals massive non-elemental damage to the entire party.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]

Surge Cannon is used by end-game mechanical bosses, such as Omega, and in the PSP release, Control System Ω. It inflicts damage equal to half the target's max HP and inflicts Sap.

Final Fantasy V[]

Wave Cannon (previously known as Beam Cannon) first appears as an attack used by Soul Cannon, which deals damage to the entire party equal to half of each individual character's maximum HP as well as inflicting Sap. The superboss Omega has access to this attack as well, as does Omega Mk.II in the Game Boy Advance remake. In the iOS/Steam version the ability can miss if the target has enough magic evasion.

Final Fantasy VI[]

Wave Cannon, used by Air Force, Io, Gamma, Demon, Kaiser Dragon, and Omega Weapon, inflicts major Lightning-elemental damage to the party. It has a power of 110 with a hit rate of 150, and it cost 20 MP for the enemy to use. It is only used by Air Force after it has finished its countdown for it.

Final Fantasy VII[]

Wave Artillery is an enemy ability used by Hundred Gunner, which inflicts non-elemental physical damage to the party and is only used during its third form.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Pulse cannon is an enemy ability used by the Arsenal. I causes unblockable 9999 damage to everything in its way, and the only way to avoid it is taking cover behind the concrete columns on the battlefield or causing enough damage to the boss while it's charging the move.

A more powerful version, called Cry Havoc, is used by the Arsenal in the last phase of the battle: it's impossible to avoid and causes an instant Game Over if the player doesn't defeat the boss before it finishes charging.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Wave Cannon is an enemy ability that opens the frontal compartment to fire a beam of energy at all characters. It is used by Manasvin Warmech.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

Wave Cannon is a Feral Link used by Omega. It inflicts magic damage on a target and nearby foes.

It is also an enemy ability used by Omega. It inflicts massive damage on the party. Omega Staggers after using this.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

The Cloud of Darkness uses many versions of her Particle Beam attacks during the raid fight against her. Some other powerful voidsent, such as Calofisteri, Scathach, and Diabolos Hollow, also possess certain forms of Particle Beam.

The primal Zurvan uses Wave Cannon as one of his attacks, which he fires from outside the edge of the arena in a straight-line.

During a cinematic cutscene at the end of 3.55 The Far Edge of Fate, Omega uses Wave Cannon in a beam struggle against Shinryu's Protostar attack.

Wave Cannon is used by Omega in several forms: A "Larboard Wave Cannon" and "Starboard Wave Cannon" attack deals heavy damage on the left and right sides of the boss, respectively. In the Alphascape v4.0 (Savage) duty, Omega's final form uses Savage Wave Cannon, which targets a tank with magic vulnerability. This damage must be shared between both tanks. Oversampled Wave Cannon targets two random players with massive, heavy-hitting AoEs, which must be absorbed by the tanks.

One of the Cloud of Darkness's cards can use Ultra Particle Beam. For the discard of another Cloud of Darkness card and the payment of any amount of Water CP the player chooses, the ability decreases the power of all the opponent's Forwards by 1000 times the amount of CP paid, until the end of the turn. The same card also has a less powerful ability similar to Ultra Particle Beam, Dulling the Cloud of Darkness and paying any amount of CP to decrease the power of a single forward by 1000 times the CP paid.

Related abilities[]

In Final Fantasy VIII, Trauma uses an attack known as Mega Pulse Cannon, while the Dromas uses an attack known as Mini Pulse Cannon. Both in the Japanese versions are known as Surge Cannons, linking them to the Wave Cannon ability.

Etymology and origin[]

A particle beam is a stream of charged or neutral particles, in many cases moving at near the speed of light. The ability may be a reference to the 1975 anime Space Battleship Yamato, which prominently featured a weapon of the same name, (波動砲 or はどうほう, Hadōhō?) in Japanese, translated there as "Wave Motion Gun". Yamato's Wave Motion Gun relied on a wave of tachyons or 'charged particles', resulting in the various different translations of the same term.
