I can't believe I've left this walkthrough for so long. Final Fantasy VI is, without a doubt, my favourite of the 2D Final Fantasy games -- possibly even of the entire series. It's the only one I'd consider a genuine masterpiece. Seriously, I love this game. Hopefully my enthusiasm will pass onto you as you play through it.
As usual, expect my favoured blend of random observations, terrible puns and daftness.

Cast

Look at all these characters! And each one has their own unique ability or point of interest. No blank slates here (well, maybe one, but that's kind of the point of them).

Aesthetic Notes

  • Final Fantasy VI is where the series starts to move away with the whole Crystals routine which, let's face it, was getting pretty tired after Final Fantasy V. The game adopts a more industrial revolution-style world, where magic and technology intertwine.
  • There are a lot of cultural references and allusions at work here, drawing from classical art, music and philosophy. If you're intelligent, you'll appreciate the game much more.
  • I believe it's also the first video game to feature an opera scene. Which is bloody amazing, by the way.
  • For a game that had (at most) a Teen rating (11+ in the UK), there are a fair few themes that got past the radar. One thing was censored for the updated releases (more on that later), but there are still certain issues included in the game that you wouldn't expect to be in a game marketed at people ages 7 and over.

Espers

  • Magic is a central plot point -- while most characters don't learn it naturally, they can gain new magic by equipping Espers, Final Fantasy VI's equivalent of Summon monsters.
  • Once an Esper is equipped, that character will start learning any magic owned by the equipped Esper through Magic AP gained after battles. For example, the Ifrit Esper contains the spells Fire, Fira and Drain.
  • Spell progress is denoted with a percentage. Once a spell reaches 100%, it is learned and stays with the character permanently. Should you remove an Esper before a spell is learned from it, the spell's progress is retained. If you have, say, 37% of the Drain spell learned, then you unequip Ifrit and re-equip him later, you'll still have 37% towards learning Drain.
  • Each Esper has an Acquisition Rate at which their spells are learned, which multiplies Magic AP gained towards that particular spell. For example, Ifrit teaches Fire spell at a rate of 10x, Fira at 5x and Drain at 1x. If Terra, equipped with Ifrit, gains 3 Magic AP from a battle, she'll have 30% towards Fire, 15% towards Fira and 3% towards Drain.

General Tips

  • Until a certain point in the game, do not level grind. The low-level game is a fun challenge and very rewarding. Why not level up quickly? Because the majority of stat bonuses come from the Esper a character has equipped at the point when they level up. Levels gained without an equipped Esper (that carries a stat bonus) are effectively wasted.
  • Magic is awesome in this game. In general, it far outranks physical attacks and is very cost-effective for its power level. There's a spell for pretty much every occasion, so learn as much as you can.
  • Don't sell your equipment. Gil isn't that hard to come by, and saving rare equipment for a certain point later in the game saves dividends.
