The Dragoon is a job class close to my heart. Some of the coolest characters in the series have donned the title of Dragon Knight, like Kain, Freya, and the latest entry to the club, Oerba Yun Fang. But then there's that one lame-ass Dragoon wanna-be, consider him a black mark on an otherwise flawless record. But I don't obsess over Dragoons like many do, I save my adoration for Summoners, Warriors, Black Mages and Mystic Knights.

In FF5, Dragoons aren't really that cool. The problem is they just don't bring anything that good to the table. Lance isn't that useful, and there are some good spears but they're only really useful for certain bosses, in which case you can switch to Freelancer which can equip anything. The only ability you would really want to use is Jump, so learn it for 50 AP and move on. FF5 proves it's the Character under the armor, not the Abilities associated with it, that make the Dragoon awesome.

The Dancer is an interesting class. Flirt is obviously useless, but Dance has a use. When the Dancer uses Dance, one of four random effects happens - You confuse enemies, you drain some MP, some HP, or do an attack with 4x power. Fortunately, the Red Slippers and Rainbow Dress equipment pieces boost the chance of the 4x hit appearing. With them on, you've actually got more like a 50/50 chance, which is a chance I like to take.

Fortunately, the Red Slippers and Rainbow Dress equipment pieces boost the chance of the 4x hit appearing. The problem with the Dancer is that it just doesn't have any indispensable abilities. The Ribbon is useful, but the "Equip Ribbons" ability isn't worth an ability slot, and the Freelancer can equip Ribbons without the ability. Try them out if you want to have fun with Dance, but you can skip these guys. It's not that they suck, they're not just good enough compared to other jobs.

The Samurai is a job class you'll hate to use, because most of his abilities are impossible to spell, and don't even try pronouncing them. The Samurai's abilities are mostly sub-par. Mineuchi is glitched and is just a normal attack, and Iainuki is useless. Most Instant Death attacks are, but Iainuki is just the Odin summon without MP cost. Stop being a cheapskate and use Summoners. Shirahadori boosts evade and is passive, but not worth the AP of mastering the job so the Freelancer can pick it up.

As with the Beastmaster, the only ability of the Samurai you'll actually use is Zeninage, otherwise known as Gil Toss. It can easily do several thousand damage to enemies, but burns through your wallet like wildfire. These makes it impractical for 95% of the game, but in the final dungeon and the Sealed Temple, use it to great effect since money is no longer an issue. But besides Zeninage there's no point to using this job.

The Chemist stirs mixed feelings in me. Like the Samurai, it's not a bad job, it's just not as good as others. The Chemist's innate Pharmacology ability doubles the effect of healing items, which isn't that bad. Mix lets you combine items, in-game you aren't told which ones do what, but click the link for Mix above for a list. Some more awesome Mixes include Triple Ether, Reincarnate, Goliath Tonic, Kiss of Life, Holy Breath and Shadow Flare. Drink, Recover and Revive are all useless.

So while the Chemist's Mix is good, it's not good enough to justify the job. To me anyway, maybe you feel different. Check the list, try some Mixes and use the job is it pleases you. But not needed in any way.

This section covers the jobs found in the Earth Crystal. As a general note, at this point I think they ran out of ideas, because they only give you four new jobs. Where are the Dark Knights, Sages and Paladins? I'm gonna bring those three classes up again because it's worth noting they passed up some good ideas.

Dragoon

Dragoon
Bartz

Command Jump Innate Skills None Equipment Spears, Knives
Ability 1 Jump Description Jump on an enemy for extra damage 50 ABP
Ability 2 Lance Description Absorb HP and MP from an enemy 150 ABP
Ability 3 Equip Spears Description User can equip Spears 400 ABP
Ability 4 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 5 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 6 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 7 None Description N/A N/A ABP

Dancer

Command Dance Innate Skills None Equipment Knives
Ability 1 Flirt Description Charm enemy to stop attacks 25 ABP
Ability 2 Dance Description Perform one of four random attacks 50 ABP
Ability 3 Equip Ribbons Description User can equip Dancer equipment 325 ABP
Ability 4 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 5 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 6 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 7 None Description N/A N/A ABP

The Dancer is an interesting class. Flirt is obviously useless, but Dance has a use. When the Dancer uses Dance, one of four random effects happens - You confuse enemies, you drain some MP, some HP, or do an attack with 4x power. Fortunately, the Red Slippers and Rainbow Dress equipment pieces boost the chance of the 4x hit appearing. With them on, you've actually got more like a 50/50 chance, and since the flip side of the coin is only slightly less advantageous than the side I want, that's a chance I'm willing to take.

Samurai

Bartz

Command Zeninage Innate Skills Shirahadori Equipment Knives, Katana
Ability 1 Mineuchi Description Smack an enemy to paralyze them 10 ABP
Ability 2 Zeninage Description Throw money at enemies to damage them 30 ABP
Ability 3 Shirahadori Description Can evade attacks easier 60 ABP
Ability 4 Equip Katana Description User can equip Katanas 180 ABP
Ability 5 Iainuki Description Attack and kill all enemies 540 ABP
Ability 6 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 7 None Description N/A N/A ABP

Chemist

Chemist
Bartz
Lenna
Galuf
Faris
Krile
Command Drink Innate Skills Pharmacology Equipment Knives, Staffs
Ability 1 Pharmacology Description Doubles effect of healing items 15 ABP
Ability 2 Mix Description Mix two items to various effect 30 ABP
Ability 3 Drink Description User can drink special Chemist brews 45 ABP
Ability 4 Recover Description Restore status ailments on party 135 ABP
Ability 5 Revive Description Revive all party members 405 ABP
Ability 6 None Description N/A N/A ABP
Ability 7 None Description N/A N/A ABP
