Afternoon. I feel like I'm about to come down with a cold, but I have a new job starting soon...I think I have to get the cold as quickly as possible so it passes before the job starts. It's a small sacrifice.

Anyway, welcome to Part 4 of my Final Fantasy V walkthrough!

Last time, we escaped the Ship Graveyard. On the Overworld, you can encounter the following enemies:

To the south, you'll find a town.

Carwen[]

Items[]

FFV iOS Carwen
Author's Note #4: I like the music here. It reminds me of Diddy Kong Racing for some reason.

Go through the two gaps under the pathway above. Climb the stairs and go right to find the pub. Play the piano here (Piano Count: 2/8) and go to the bottom-left corner. Below the pots is a secret passage leading left. The top grey vase contains a nifty 1,000 Gil. Head right and talk to the guy behind the counter. There's no treasure (not unless you count the brilliant line of dialogue), but do it anyway ;)

Leave the pub, then go south down the wide stairs. Further south between the crates is a secret passage. Inside the lowest crate is a Frost Rod. Leave the secret passage and go left. The second barrel to the left contains an Antidote.

You may as well go shopping -- there's some new equipment and magic. I'd recommend at least one Black Mage (you want an excuse to equip that Frost Rod), a White Mage and a Knight.

When you're ready, leave Carwen and head north. On the east, there's a forest. At the north end of the forest is a mountain. Off we go!

Blue Magic[]

Flash[]

Enemies: Headstone

Headstone-ffv-ios

Location: North Mountain
MP: 7
Effect: Blinds all enemies, making their physical attacks next to useless.
Flash has very limited capabilities. Get it for completion purposes if you like. Annoyingly, you have to feed the Headstone an Ether to give it enough MP to actually cast Flash.

North Mountain

I have a sneaking suspicion that all of these location shots are going to have Lenna in them...

Head north into the cave. To the south is a Phoenix Down in a chest. Go back north and take the south deviation. There's a Gold Needle for you. Back north and leave the cave via the nearby west exit.

Outside, simply head north to the next cave. The path forward is very obvious, but when you leave the second cave and reach the area with plants on the ground, walk around them. They poison your entire party if you step on them, and the Cockatrice enemies here are hard to hit, so battles will drag on unnecessarily and you certainly don't want to be poisoned.

Anyway, inside the next cave is a Save Point. Tent up, save your game and head out. Lenna will see King Tycoon's helmet on the ground (why'd he take it off?) and get immediately shot by a poisoned arrow. Lenna Poisoned Count: 1. Bartz goes to rescue her but the path collapses.

Along comes Magissa, a hunter. She wants a princess to present to her husband (as you do). Faris leaps across the chasm to rescue Lenna but the ground gives way again and she falls. Heh, even Magissa thinks Faris is a dude.

Luckily, Faris manages to climb back up. Magissa just kind of stands there while Faris and Bartz build a rope bridge, and the party's back together. It's go time.

Boss Battle: Magissa, Forza
Magissa-ffv-ios
Forza-ffv-ios

Level: 8 each
HP: 650, 850
MP: 200, 100
ABP: 6

Steal: Nothing
Drops: Whip, Power Drink

Weakness: -
Immunity: -
Absorbs: -

Difficulty: Simple
Strategy:

It's actually in between Simple and Medium, a difficulty I haven't yet defined. Smedium? Mimple? Anyway, It's a straight-up brawl with no real gimmicks, but both of them can hit hard.

The battle begins with just Magissa (and a poisoned Lenna), but after a while she summons her husband Forza (who I think looks like a circus act covered in balloons) to start beating us up and protecting her, as his presence creates a front row and back row for the enemy party.

You can actually end the battle instantly (relegating the difficulty to Easy) by having a character equip that Frost Rod you got back in Carwen and then using it as an item. It'll cast Blizzaga on Magissa, killing her instantly. The upshot is that we don't get a Power Drink, and we miss Forza's Bestiary entry (for now, at least).

Magissa's Drain is the worst thing that can happen here -- it can easily OHKO any party member due to the strange way absorbing spells work.

After the battle, head west and through the cave. You'll come to a Hiryu (飛龍, "flying dragon") that's in a bad way. Lenna will cross the poisonous thorns (Lenna Poisoned Count: 2) to get the dragon grass it needs to feel well again. Bartz reveals that he's afraid of heights, the party (quite rightly) laughs at him, and we're off!

Next time, we're taking a quick detour now that we have the Hiryu. Where are we going? Find out next time!
