The True Story of Mystic Quest[]
Oh, hello kiddies! Welcome to my humble abode, come, sit down. I'm always willing to entertain visitors. What can I do for you? We can discuss politics, the state of world affairs, which contestant on American Idol has the nicest rack...
Ah, I see, you've come to learn the untold story of Mystic Quest, hm? The story of how it isn't just some silly spin-off and is in fact, a true Final Fantasy game? It's a vague tale, indeed it is. So vague it is almost impossible to notice in the game itself. Some say the true story is just an illusion, something I made up. They insist I made it all up as an excuse to try and justify the game's existence. They say to me "Drake, you're a hack and a liar, this story is complete and utter crap. Jump in front of a speeding bus and rid us of your ignorance".
To those people I say "fuck off". True, a bit unoriginal, but I say it with a phony English accent, it helps to give it a bit more zing. You've never quite said "fuck off" until you say it with an English accent. That's why I simultaneously envy and pity those with true English accents, they get to do it all the time but don't appreciate the privilege they enjoy.
Let me get my reading glasses...there we go. And now kiddies, gather round my chair...a bit closer...you on the left, they can smell you two towns over, back it up. It's called showering, look into it. For the rest of you, settle down, and I shall serenade you with this...
Prologue[]
For a thousand years
the distant world of Eleminia
was been blessed by providence
brought on by the four Crystals of Element...
Situated in the four regions of the world
the four Great Guardians pledged
to always protect the Crystals
from the forces of darkness...
But now, the wind grows restless
the fires of the land rage and shake
the once-pure water has frozen over
and the plants of the forests turn lifeless...
For the past hundred years
the Guardians have been silent
monsters have erupted from their sanctums
and the world is being torn asunder...
There is hope, however, a slim hope.
Prophecy tells us of a great warrior
who will arrive when the world is dark
and return the light to us...
Now, the time has come
for the Warrior of Legend to rise.
He who shall save the Crystals,
find their lost Guardian in their sanctums,
and save our world from oblivion...
Story - Part 1[]
Our tale begins in the sleepy village of Focaria, nestled in the shadow of the Great Focus Tower. The four regions of the world, though all in close proximity, are closed off from each other by magical barriers erected by the Great Guardians to protect their regions. For centuries it was, the Focus Tower acted as a dimensional gateway around the world, the only way one could pass between the regions. However, for the last century the Crystals have turned their backs on mankind, and the Great Guardians have not been seen. The Focus Tower is powered by the light of the Crystals, and without them the doors of the Focus Tower have remained sealed.
Our hero, Benjamin, is the son of the village's greatest hunter. His father however, has been worrisome as of late. As we begin our journey, Benjamin's father tells him that the people of the world have lived like this for too long. For a hundred years they struggled to survive without the blessing of the Crystals, but the world is dying and humans cannot last much longer. Benjamin's father leaves on a journey to investigate the Great Guardians, giving his son one of his smaller swords, and entrusting Benjamin to help protect the village in his absence. Not long after he leaves, however, then monsters attack the village. During the attack there is an earthquake. Benjamin is knocked unconscious by the attack.
When Benjamin awakens, he is in the company of an old man. Around them, the village has been destroyed. The old man tells Benjamin that he is "the Warrior of Legend". As foretold over a hundred years ago, when the world is in peril, a Warrior will arrive to save the Crystals. The old man tells Benjamin he is the warrior the world has been waiting for. It was no accident that the monsters attacked when his father left - the Vile Four have been watching him, waiting for their chance to strike. Benjamin asks who the Vile Four are. The old man explains they are the ones once known as the Great Guardians, but they have become corrupted by evil and are now creatures of darkness. The Vile Four believe the prophecy foretells their overthrow by humans and losing the Crystals to them, and will do whatever they can to kill Benjamin before he can claim them.
Then, a Behemoth enters the ruins of the viallge. Benjamin grabs the sword his father left him and defends himself, narrowly killing the beast. The old man tells Benjamin he is truly his father's son. If he has the same courage and strength, he must accept his destiny. The Vile Four now know he is defenseless, and will send their minions to kill him. The only way to be safe now, is to get to them first. Benjamin must now track down the Vile Four, and try and restore them to their true forms as the Great Guardians. And if they cannot be restored, the Crystals must be taken from them before their corruption seeps into the Crystals. The old man tells Benjamin he must first seek Captain Mac in Forestia to the south-west. Mac is a friend of Benjamin's father and a researcher on the Crystals and the Great Guardians. If anyone knows how to save the Crystals it is him, he must be found. The old man vanishes, leaving Benjamin to begin his journey.
Story - Part 2[]
Benjamin travels to Forestia, situated in the middle of the Level Forest. As Benjamin goes through the forest, he sees the decay of the plants brought about by the loss of the Crystal's light. In Forestia, Benjamin finds out where Captain Mac lives, but he's not there. His daughter Kaeli says that Mac went out on a sailing journey over a year ago, but recently the lakes and rivers dried up so he can't get back. Benjamin asks how they could find out what happened to him. Kaeli says that the water feeding the regions comes from Aquaria to the north-east. If they can make it to Aquaria, they can try and figure out how to refill the dried lake.
