Last page, mi amigos, it's been fun.
The Last Battle
Teleport to the Edge of Nil, then proceed north into another one of those pulsating dark portals. The emperor lies at the end of this long wooden bridge, awaiting his challengers to meet him. As you examine the silhouetted figure on the throne, you find that the great and powerful Emperor of Avalon, who we have feared for all this time is actually...
Elgo? I told you he didn't die.
Elgoo wanted to transcend the frail bonds of time to become immortal, meaning that he could reign supreme until the end of the universe. He used the power of Nil and the crystals to pursue his goal (a feat he obtained by manipulating the void into allowing him to cross between dimensions), but was thwarted by the efforts of our heroes. That's actually a pretty cool plan! Way better than just pining for void to envelop the world, or getting a kick out of destroying it. No, Elgo sought to live eternally, so that no man nor woman would ever succeed and supplant him as absolute ruler. It's like Ultimecia's grand plan, except awesome, sensical, and not at all out-of-her-fucking-mind ridiculous. Respect, Elgo. Respect. When everyone refuses to give in to the Emperor's wicked machinations, he absorbs the power of Nil he has been controlling for so long, and makes it his own. IT IS BOSS TIME!
Elgo fails to control the void and is devoured by it, just like Exdeath was all those years ago. Even though the single greatest threat has been neutralised, the now host-less void loses control, sucking everything in like a black hole. Who knew? Communicating via the whisperweed, the heroes get a pep talk from everyone we lent a hand to around the globe (except the dead ones, of course). Bikke and Matoya, Prince Adrian, Queen Cilque, Eduardo the Bardo (with music that can't be played on the harp, thanks very much) and the civilization of dwarves, Dr. Lugae with Babz, Argy and Sophia by his side. Lastly, Cid shows up with some Mysidians to combat the forces of Nil. On Bikke's ship, it becomes apparent that Matoya has 'bought' the allegiance of the Fuga clan and they help her to dispose of the enemies. She becomes cornered by Nil, but is saved by Jinnai (!?!?) who was supposedly 'rescued' by her. When did that happen? And then Gawain struts in! As Alba would say, 'Whu-whuuuuuut?!
Together, the ninja and paladin julienne Nil into neat little rows, and the day is saved. Unfortunately for everyone who matters, they're still stuck at the Edge of Nil, not escaping or anything. Sophia gives us our final objective: eliminate the void's core and bring an end to the imminent apocalypse wrought by the void. Following that long cutscene, you gain control of the party again. Just behind you are a save point and healing orb that you can use to prepare for the true final boss. Me, I stuck with the party I used against Elgo, so there was very little preparation to be had. Technically, you can return to the Dark Gate and its conjoining areas, but you aren't permitted outside of the rift until the core of the void has been eliminated. Complete the last minute putting together of your team, and inspect the portal where Elgo and his throne once stood.
Whoooo, that was fun! Now that the world is safe again, we can finally go home. The party assembles, and we are given the freedom of a victory strut down the Red Carpet. Before we can leave, the World of Nil trembles as light is returned to the world. Regrettably for us, the incandescent explosion that will inevitably occur will vaporise us should we not escape in time. Keep heading south to exit the are, following the path you took to get here. At the castle, Dusk and Alba decide to sacrifice themselves in order for the remaining six to escape. It's all very touching that the two best characters (because of the falling out with Aigis) in the party will be killed, and it's sad and dreadful and great for the story, but Glaive comes in to steal their thunder because let's face it: the plot hasn't been very generous to him recently, now has it?
As the party leader, enter the doors of the castle to escape. Turns out that Glaive wants to immolate himself in order to keep Diana safe, who he believes that Sol should have. Oooh, plot development for Glaive! Better late then never, I suppose. The light begins to shine brightly, signifying the start of the flare, and Dusk/Alba remove Glaive with a teleport spell. One question, how is 'facing the light head-on' supposed to help everyone else? Do they have magical light-reflecting powers? Strange. Save the game when prompted.
Avalon is completely razed, and the remaining five wind up on the deck of the McGuffin (Argy saved them allegedly, but I'm not believing that bullshit for one second). Glaive turns up on the ship, embarrassed at being tossed out by Alba and Dusk. I don't blame him, it's pretty demoralising to be kicked out by people who don't want to die with you. 'Whyyyy?!' Cause you suck. Waitwaitwait. Okay, now Avalon is destroyed. And everyone's sad. =(
- NOTE - Pulchritudinous is actually a word. Seriously! I looked it up!
Epilogue
WARNING: HUGE SPOILERS
Sol is woken up by Diana in Lux. Di is now an 'Oracle of the Crystals', meaning exactly nothing. I don't know what Sol's deal is. They meet with Glaive in the middle of town, who now works at some sinecure in the castle. Fuck that, these people should be kings and queens for the service they've done to El Mondo! But no, turns out he's just the Captain of the Guards (*hrmff*, really?). Sol and Diana leave for an airship to take them to Burtgang (you'll see why in a moment), and Glaive is left alone. That is, until a shadowed figure - which you know perfectly well is Alba - walks up to him. Is there anyone in this game not impervious to death?
Argy is working with Sophia to regain her autonomy, and Dr. Lugae is looking into the process of assimilating magic and technology into one. Yeah, tell me how that turns out when a court mage gone insane ascends to godhood and destroys the world. Do these people never learn? Over at Falgabard, and Nacht is with Graham at his father's gravesite. I care not for what they are doing, and nor should you.
Babs shows up on Ceres' progeny, Pallas. Thankfully, she doesn't stay long. Sol flies over Alfheim, where Cid has landed his ship (he's taking the Elves to Burtgang). Ehhh, other stuff happens, like Nacht visiting Matoya, who has entrusted the duties of the Desert Moon leader to the Jinnai and the Fuga clan. THEN we get a scene with Bikke and Eduardo - why the fuck do we have to see all of this? Oh, and get this! Aigis is the knight-commander of Burtgang! Bull. Crap. He should be singing in bars and sleazy taverns like the bard I made him to be.
Okay, okay, everyone's at Burtgang, where Sarah's coronation is being held. Eduardo plays a special tune that he created: the Queen of Light (That's the prelude! Come on!). Just as Sarah is about to be crowned, Dusk appears and explains how he survived: Vata, Freyr and Masked Elgo volunteer their spirits to stop the encroaching blast of light, and teleport the two away. Officially, no one good can die in this game. Then Glaive and Alba appear! Also, Dusk is the Great Elder, while Alba was shunned from the duty because she's too crazed and insane. Finally, Sarah is crowned and becomes Queen of Burtgang, and everybody celebrates the dawn of a bright new world, as terrible J-Pop is played and the credits roll.
Thank you everyone! Hope you enjoyed the journey! Until next we meet!
