Part 6, Chapter 6
Subquests[]
We open on Zack trying to get ahold of Sephiroth who won't return his calls because he's gone into isolation. Aerith calls to remind us that Zack is straight, and to remind him he said he'd help her make a flower wagon. Now we get control, it's a new chapter so guess what time it is.
Missions 1-3-1 to 1-5-6 are available, the first set of 1-3-# has some good Materia including Graviga and Curaga, considering doing them, but it isn't an order. 2-2-1 is open but a waste of time, as is 3-1-6. Mission 5-1-4 is a rematch with Bahamut Fury for a Drain Materia, not worth it in the least. Something I will over, since this has to go somewhere - complete Missions 6-1-5 and 3-1-3, and defeat the Tonberry in 6-1-1 and the Cactuar in 3-1-3. This unlocks Missions 10-1-1 and 10-2-1, each is a chain of three missions. Complete them to get Cactuar and Tonberry for the DMW. The Cactuar in 3-1-3 is hidden to the left of the Genesis enemy at the end, edge around the corner to avoid initiating battle so you can find the Cactuar. In 10-2-3 the Magic Pot enemy appears. Equip Gravity, Jump, Assault Twister and Fira (I had all these moves so you should too), and attack it with these moves in the proper order to appease it and get the Magic Pot DMW.
Inspect your supply locker for a Fira Materia. when you're done with the missions, then head into the training room. Beat four opponents in squats to win various items, all of which are seemingly useless but not for long. You may want to do the Yuffie missions up to 8-5-6, you'll earn the Bahamut Fury summon, it's a bit difficult though, so you may want to save it for later. Now go to the entrance and speak to the two people talking there for a scene, Zack volunteers to help the Urban Development department, and this unlocks Missions 6-2-1 to 6-6-6. Go up the stairs and talk to a Shinra soldier to unlock 2-1-5, do that now.
Now we have another set of obligatory missions, but you need to complete 2-1-1 to 2-1-5 to be able to do them, and all five missions in the 2-1-# set except 2-1-6 are activated by speaking to certain people. If you missed the first four, here's how to activate them now:
- 2-1-1: Speak to man in Sector 8 at the top of the stairs
- 2-1-2: Talk to the LOVELESS fanclub head in Sector 8
- 2-1-3: Speak to the girl near the entrance to the playground in the slums
- 2-1-4: Talk to the girl in the market area in the slums
Now enter the exhibit room on the first floor past the receptionists, if all five missions have been done there should be someone in a lab coat in front of a screen display, speak to them to unlock 2-1-6, complete 2-1-6 and speak to them again to get a Mythril Tool. Now head into Sector 8 and speak to the Shinra troop near the stairs, he'll mention a reporter. Run up the stairs and along down the second set of stairs south to see a man in a suit. Speak to him and choose to let him go, you'll now receive emails about backstage details of the plot. It's optional though, depends on if you care, if you don't feel free to skip this. Head north into the LOVELESS area now and speak to the fanclub head in the alley, she tells you that they've published a book of Genesis' research of LOVELESS and it's raking in cash. Red Leather's head in the last area, meanwhile, reports their club is running into debt. Hmmm...that's it for now with them. Head up the stairs to the train station and run down the platform to get to the slums for a scene with Angeal. Head to the playground and speak to the woman in the back, answer her questions correctly to join Sephy's fanclub. The answers are pretty easy, but if you've forgotten - Masamune, Super Nova, Left.
Now there's a small subquest to unlock a chain of missions. Speak to the SOLDIER in the LOVELESS area and he'll recruit you to catch Wutai spies in Midgar. Each one you catch unlocks a mission in the 4-3-# series. Talk to each spy three times to unmask them, you'll know if it's them because you'll see a scene the third time, and they give off clues the first time you speak to them that you can pick up on. Note that you can unmask them one right after the other, you don't need to unmask and then do the mission to move on to the next, so this is pretty quick. Their locations are:
- Northwest part of LOVELESS area at the end of the alley. The guy stutters when he talks.
- Slum market, dressed as a Shinra soldier. He's surprised when you first speak to him.
- Shinra HQ second floor, the guy who gets off the elevator. He complains the building is hard to navigate.
- Woman atop the stairs in Sector 8, she's getting hit on by another guy.
- Man in front of the rocket display in the Shinra exhibit room, he mentions Cid Highwind.
- Boy (yes, as in kid) in the Slum playground, says he's a Wutai trooper.
For your help you get Walnut Wood. Of the missions they unlock, I recommend doing 4-3-5 and 4-3-6. 4-3-5 gives you the Death Materia, which is good for Materia fusion, while 4-3-6 lets you find the address for The Happy Turtle, a new shop. Fuse your Death Materia with something like Power Attack or Assault Twister to get Death Blade, it's a pretty effective attack. Zack takes a moment to wind up, then attacks over a large area, possibly hitting multiple enemies, and likely inflicting Instant Death to kill them in one hit.
After all that, we're done the subquest part of this chapter, phew. Next section we'll get back to the main plot.
Snow Day![]
Head to the Sector 5 church to see Aerith, Tseng arrives to rain on our parade and tells us she isn't here, and it's mission time. He knows Aerith, Zack asks how but Tseng keeps his mouth shut. A helicopter flies in and we're off on our next assignment. As I gather it, Genesis' forces shoot it down, because next scene the copter is crashed and we're stranded in the mountains and taking the long way to his base. Follow the path ahead, it's entirely linear with no chests. As we enter the next area we get a scene where one of the Shinra troops is easily keeping up with Zack since he's got experience in wilderness too. The two joke a bit, and then he takes off the helmet. Ta-da!
IMPORTANT CHARACTER - Cloud Strife

Cloud, for those of you who didn't play it, is the main hero of the original game, but he here's a Shinra grunt and a bit of a kid. Cloud gets a lot of hate, some of it justified, because Square-Enix seems intent on making him more mopey and withdrawn in every game he's in, erasing the confidence and leadership we fell in love with in the first place in FF7. I've no idea why, Cloud was perfectly cool and badass just as he was before, but if there's one thing SE has proven there is no limit to how horribly they'll rape their own products and characters.
Cloud's DMW is Meteor Shots, it hits all enemies for magic damage. It packs a fair punch and is the strongest normal DMW, though it's outclassed by the Summon attacks and Apocalypse, which we'll be acquiring shortly. If nothing else it hits all enemies and is much stronger than Air Strike, so it provides respectable crowd control.
Immediately after this scene we continue on, Cloud has a 5x chance to appear on the DMW in this sequence so there's a good chance to try out Meteor Shots right away. Continue along up the mountain, with your new Death Blade none of the enemies are much of a threat. At the top of the ravine is a scene where we see Genesis' stronghold. Oh, and since Cloud now has been given a name, he'll never appear with his helmet on ever again until Chapter 9. Now comes a very, very annoying minigame - you need to sneak around the facility grabbing chests, and if you get caught the guards will swipe one of the chests you haven't gotten yet. You also have to do squats in place to keep your temperature up. I've no clue why we can't just run in guns blazing, it isn't like we haven't cut down 856 of Genesis' men already (I've been keeping score), but somehow this time it's too risky. Also, this minigame has horrible detection for the guards - sometimes they see me half the yard away, other times I've knelt right beside them and they haven't done a thing. Furthermore the camera fucks up a lot here and you can't turn it around to see if anyone is coming. Oh, and regardless of what the tutorial says, don't bother leaving the facility once you head in, you'll lose a chest. Save before trying this if you want everything, it's easy to screw up.
Watch the guards and wait until you see a guard come forward, run behind him and open the chest for Power Attack, then turn around and wait until he goes left. Follow him at a safe distance until he stops. He'll turn around to the right, when he does run left of him to find a chest with Stop. Now this is where we exploit the lousy sight of the guards - in this little alcove with the chest, hold Circle to kneel and angle the camera so you can watch the intersection, the guards won't see you here and you can wait for your chance to make a break for the next area.. Wait for a guard to come and go, and a third will come after him. Now, if you pay attention, the first guard you followed up here will be coming back from the left, the second guard is in the alcove with the first chest, and the third guard is walking away from you. Watch until the first guard walks to the right where the second guard is, then follow the third to the left around the corner. Wait until he stops near the traffic cone, run right to the wall and run up to the pipe near the chest, and kneel. Count to five then stand and look to see if he's gone. If he is, give yourself a cheer, you win. Open the chest for a Death Materia, then run into the back where there's two chests with a Pearl Necklace and Sprint Shoes. The guards will come back here eventually so don't dally, claim your loot and enter the facility.
See ya next page kiddies, it's time for a lot of plot development.
