Aerith (YAY)[]

Curious how I'm beginning page 5 at the beginning of Chapter 5 huh? Anyway, kiddies, sit up straight, eyes forward. Meet my personal favorite FF7 character of all time...

IMPORTANT CHARACTER - Aerith Gainsborough

Ah, Aerith. Sweet, cute, awesome, flirty, bold, heroic Aerith. I am aware that is her Itadaki artwork and there is a render of her Crisis Core appearance on this site. I do not care, Aerith wears pink, she looks prettiest in pink, and so pink she shall wear in my image! Turns out it was Zack's idea for her to wear pink, so thanks for that Zack! Aerith is 15 in this game and thus has not yet grown into the semi-badass White Mage I know and love from FF7, but she's as adorable and funny as ever. This is where Crisis Core and Zack let me down - like Cloud, Zack has two love interests. Unlike Cloud, Zack actively pursues them and yet, also like Cloud, never tries for a threesome. For shame Zack. I respect marital loyalty, but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask right?

Aerith's DMW is Healing Wave, essentially Crisis Core's answer to Great Gospel. It heals Zack an amount of HP, AP and MP equal to his current maximums (breaking the limits if enough is healed), restores him of all status ailments, and grants him temporary invincibility for up to twenty seconds. As awesome as the woman who taught it to him.

Zack wakes up to see Aerith standing over him and mistakes her for an angel. I can't blame him. Also, sit back and enjoy the very fitting voice of Andrea Bowen - whoever it was at SE that dumped Mena Suvaru, I could kiss you for this reprieve. Zack wastes no time putting the moves on Aerith, asking her out in exchange for saving him, but Aerith turns him down. "Sorry Zack, but when my horoscope said "you will fall in love with a cute SOLDIER boy who falls from the sky," I was hoping he'd be a blond. Nothing personal." Zack notices Aerith's flowerpatch and suggests she sell them. Ya know, this also bugs me - Zack tells her to sell her flowers, to wear pink, it's almost like they're trying to shoehorn in how important he was to FF7's past, it gets to be a bit much. When the scene ends open the chest in the corner for two Ethers, and approach the save. It's a new chapter, you know what that means.

Missions 3-1-3 to 3-1-5 are available, nothing worth your time there. Mission 5-1-3 is a rematch with the Angeal copy-type enemies in a large area, nothing important to get here. Mission 7-2-1 to 7-6-6 are available, I ORDER you to do up to Mission 7-2-6. You'll find the Item Fusion Tome, Keychain, and Backpack. The latter two let you equip an extra accessory for a total of four, and the first lets you toss items into your Materia Fusions to increase the stat boost attached to that Materia. The importance of these items cannot be understated, do these missions now. For accessories, equip things to boost your MP (Firaga burns through my total fast, no pun intended), HP, Attack and Vitality.

Alright, with our epic quest to collect Materia and defeat Genesis on hold, we now begin a new epic quest to get our hands into Aerith's pants...or up her skirt? Dress? Whatever. Speak to her and elect to go, she'll escort you. Zack asks if it's just a ploy to spend time with him, and Aerith quickly says "Yeah." Wow, in five minutes Zack has gotten further with Aerith than Cloud did in five hours. Nice.

The Slums[]

Follow Aerith along the path to the next area, along the way is a monster attack, they're easily dispatched. In the next area go to the far end and speak to the girl near the hole in the wall to unlock Mission 2-1-4. Now head back to Aerith and approach the gate for a scene where Aerith remarks she's afraid of the sky. Go through the gate, and a punk kid comes by and steals your money! Aerith runs off to find him, go through the area to the exit to the next area, and Zack deduces the thief is still in this area. Now comes a minigame, which determines how much Aerith likes Zack. I'm a huge Aerith fan if you haven't noticed yet, so we're gonna be nice to her.

Now, go check the Accessory, Item and Materia shops for small scenes each time. Then speak to the girl to the left of the exit to the next area, choose to wait until Zack gets impatient. Go talk to the boy in the opposite corner in the are and give him five Potions. Now speak to Aerith, run around a bit for a scene - the brat finally gets caught and confesses he stole the money for medicine. Volunteer to buy it for him. Go through the gate (not the new area, the one you came from) and head right to the park. Kill the three worms and Zack will retrieve the kid's own wallet, which has more money than Zack has. lawl. Talk to the little girl you waited for earlier to unlock Mission 2-1-3. Now its time for more minigames to win Aerith's love.

Go to the item shop, buy some perfume and agree to blend it yourself. You need to collect however many drops you're told - a single drip is one drop, two drips is two, and a splash is ten. Count the drips (pause if you need to) and get it right for a lovely new scent. Now go to the Materia shop to play a minigame where you run a lap around the area collecting Materia. You need to get a time of 23 seconds or faster for the best results, I got 22:56, so it's very possible. Go to the accessory shop now to see a scene. You'll get a Soma, a Remedy, a Hi-Potion, and then Zack buys Aerith her trademark hair ribbon. Oh, there's another minigame down here, but it doesn't boost Aerith's affection rating and you only get some crummy items, so skip it. After this Aerith invites Zack to the park, go along, we're done here. Now there's a long scene of Zack and Aerith flirting in the park. Sephiroth ruins the moment though with an untimely phone call - while we've been trying to sweep Aerith off her feet below the plate, up above Genesis' attack is still going on. Let's move! Head back to the shop area, save, and move ahead. As you leave a boy gives you a Steal Materia.

Return to the Plate[]

Zack runs along the highway to find the Shinra HQ in chaos. We're quickly ambushed by a force of G Assailants and Moth Slashers as we head in. At the end we fight a G Warrior, a miniboss. He has 8,000 HP but is an otherwise unremarkable foe, save for his appearance, a very bizarre looking creature he is. A few good swats to his backside or a couple Firaga casts will put him down. Zack runs ahead when Angeal flies in. Zack gives him the cold shoulder, and Angeal admits he's not really sure what he's doing. More proof his character is dull and boring, they can't even come up with a motivation for him. "Zack, no matter what happens, I have to protect my honor." Dude, you fucking forfeited honor when you abandoned Shinra and nearly killed Zack like, two hours ago. Zack finally agrees to help and Angeal flies him to Shinra HQ. I really have to ask why it is wings on only one wide allow them to fly. Yeah, Sephiroth becomes able to fly without wings, but if Angeal and Genesis can fly without them too why bother making them flap like they're actually providing lift?

We fly in to see Sephiroth in the heat of battle. Angeal asks Sephiroth if he's lost weight...okay. Angeal guesses Genesis is after Hojo for Hollander, so we're off to protect the little weasel. Angeal and Sephiroth head off, leaving Zack to find Hojo. In control now go forward, ignoring the right fork and you'll come to a room FF7 veterans should recognize. In the back of the room seize the X-Potion and Remedy, then take the elevator up. Hojo is ahead, speak to him. Hojo is completely calm despite the chaos in the rest of the building, and doesn't fear Genesis' forces. Considering most of the ones we've seen up until now die in two sword swings, I can't say I blame him. Hojo mumbles about Jenova a bit, then basically tells Zack point-blank he isn't in SOLDIER to think. In control now equip your Steal Materia and inspect the control panel Hojo was standing at. After the scene you'll fight six monsters, steal from each of them to get a Jail Key, there are four in the hall and two in the cell area themselves. You should have no trouble getting the keys from them, just remember to equip Steal. Open the six cells for a big cache of items. You only have three minutes total to kill them, get your items and get back to Hojo, but the counter stops during battles so three minutes is plenty. There are some other things to do by examining the control panels and the capsule in the lab, but it's just pointless diversions, you earn a little SP but you should have plenty.

When you're ready to proceed speak to Hojo and say "of course I am" to advance the scene. Genesis arrives and Hojo guesses he's obeying Hollander to find a cure for his condition. Angeal arrives too and Genesis spouts more LOVELESS randomly. Hojo makes a snide remark here that's kinda funny, "the entire cast of Hollander's freak show!" Turns out Hojo knows LOVELESS too and doesn't care for it. It's revealed here Act IV ends with two friends facing off to duel, but the outcome is unknown since the final act, Act V, is missing. Genesis does some philosophizing over the idea, then blows up the capsule and flies off leaving Angeal to grab Zack and following. Outside Genesis summons a new monster, and Angeal, pussy he is, leaves Zack to fight it alone and flies off. Zack's phone rings, it's Aerith. "Listen, can I call you back? I have some company." Bahamut Fury appears as Zack hangs up and grabs his sword. "Don't keep your guests waiting," she says...

Boss
Bahamut Fury
HP MP Dangerous Attack
18,000 312 Exaflare
Steal Morph Drops
Hi-Potion N/A Thundara
Weakness Resistance Difficulty
None All elements 2.5/5

Bahamut Fury is perhaps the first truly dangerous boss thus far, not counting the optional bosses on Missions - his attacks are kinda easy to dodge, but if they hit they'll do a number on you, and he has a lot more HP than previous bosses. He remains in one place the entire battle, leaving you to run forward and whack away. He telegraphs his claw swipe quite clearly, it's pretty nasty and will do several hundred damage and knock you back a distance. When he conjures fireballs he'll launch them at Zack, they do around 700 damage each so try to dodge them. When he uses Hexafang he launches his wing-spikes to impale Zack, hitting up to six times for around 250 damage each, and is invincible while using it. Finally we have Exaflare, his cinematic attack that as such cannot be dodged and saps a lot of AP, MP and HP. Like Bahamut's Megaflare it's gravity-based so it isn't fatal, but it does a lot more damage and will likely sap you right to near fatal status.

First off, forget magic, any and all elemental attacks do half damage to Bahamut Fury, so you should stick to sword attacks and conserve MP for Cura. There's an increased chance of Aerith's DMW occurring during this fight, it can save your ass. Hack away, dodge at the right times, and keep your HP above 2000 points to see this battle to the end. If you run out of MP toss a Hi-Potion, besides healing MP isn't needed much so conserve your Ethers if you're low. When you win Bahamut Fury explodes and Zack is transported back to the real world to find Genesis and Angeal gone. And so we end Chapter 5.
