Page 2, moving on.
The Inner Circle[]
In the inner area of the fort you'll still meet random enemies. Go right to find some Earrings, then backtrack and take the left path for a Hi-Potion. Save in the central courtyard now. Examine the shrine for an optional scene - Zack is confronted by three members of Wutai's elite force Crescent Unit. This is a curious scene, a pity that it's easy to miss. The three ask Zack how he feels torturing innocents and spreading terror in the name of Shinra, but of course for Zack it isn't like that. Crescent Unit offers him the chance to join them and fight for justice, Zack is conflicted but stands by Shinra, so of course they attack. The battle is three Crescent Unit Lux, they each have 1000 HP so this is a miniboss battle really, but they're pretty slow so it won't be too hard. In the aftermath Zack lets their captain live, but the guy warns they won't stop fighting for Wutai.
Approach the stairs for a scene with Yuffie. She's as annoying as ever but is just a kid in this game so she doesn't have cuteness to compensate, thus she's a total waste of time and attention. Zack plays it cool and goes along with her antics to get rid of her, the best thing to do with her really. With her gone he heads inside and comes across two ogres. Boss time!

The twins as I'll call them have the same HP so pick one and start wailing on him. When both are alive they can use Twin Tomahawk, a cutscene attack (most bosses have at least one of these, they cannot be avoided) that does around 150 damage to Zack. Be sure to keep his HP up and try to get behind them to get critical hits and speed up the fight, they're not too bright and you can get in several swings before they realize they should turn around. If you get a Limit Break awesome, it'll do heavy damage to them. With one gone their ability to use Twin Tomahawk is gone, so clean up the other one. They aren't too dangerous but they can kill you if you're stupid or careless, so as long as you keep an eye on your HP and have gotten the hang of dodging, you'll be fine.
When the twins are dead Zack phones in the win and is given five minutes to run before the fort explodes. A third ogre drops in, and Angeal proves he has a use besides annoying us by slicing it up with the Buster Sword. "You're a little more important than my sword," thanks asshat. The two run to meet Lazard who rewards you depending on how many enemies you killed earlier: if you filled up the meter you'll get a Fire Armlet. Now we have to meet up with Sephiroth, Angeal and Lazard walk off and we're left fighting three pansies in skirts who totally ripped off Zidane's Mage Mashers. These are G Assassins, they've got 720 HP each, so if you were able to beat the Crescent Unit troopers earlier you'll have no trouble here. The only thing to note is they can use Blizzard magic, easy to dodge, draw one away from the other two and wail on him until he crumbles. In the aftermath Zack runs off with Lazard while Angeal handles more enemies. Zack takes Lazard to the checkpoint then runs back to help Angeal. Take this time to save and equip the Fire Armlet and HP Up Materia. Run back up the path to find Angeal gone and the enemies collapsed - a Materia rises from one of them and creates a flaming crest in the air to pull Zack into another world...

Ah, Ifrit, the classic Fire summon. Ifrit is pretty hardcore for a third boss, he moves and attacks very quickly and backs a fair wallop. He's weak to Blizzard so cast it to bitchslap him for upwards of 500 damage a hit. The problem is landing it, since he moves so fast he's liable to just move out of the way, or to attack you before you can finish casting and stop the spell outright. Ifrit's worst move is his signature summon attack Hellfire, which will do heavy fire-elemental damage. If you've got the Fire Armlet on it'll be reduced to around 200, if you don't have it you'll look at 300 or more. Major pain will be inflicted, be sure to cast Cure when the animation finishes. When Ifrit bites the dust you earn the Assault Twister Materia, equip it if you like it but keep the Cure and HP Up Materia on.
When you win Ifrit will try to keep fighting, but Sephiroth arrives and does what he does best - kill the enemy while looking flashy and poised. Zack is impressed. Back in the real world Sephy examines the bodies of the fallen enemies - they look just like Genesis, the missing SOLDIER. Sephiroth calls them Genesis Copies, but doesn't explain. Oh, and Angeal is missing now too. Great. Sephiroth writes him off as another traitor but Zack doesn't buy it. On that note, we end the chapter. Oh, and though it's a pain to do it with Ifrit hogging the right side of the screen...
IMPORTANT CHARACTER - Sephiroth
Many cite Sephiroth as one of the best villains of the series. They're completely wrong, but that's another story for another time. As it stands, I dislike Sephiroth in every game he appears in, except this one. Yes, in Crisis Core I like Sephiroth, he's far more interesting a character in this game before he became Cloud's rival/archenemy/stalker ex-boyfriend. He's actually a nice guy it turns out, with several moments of genuine kindness and sympathy, he just keeps it close to the vest.
Sephiroth's DMW attack for Zack is Octaslash, a sequence of eight sword attacks. You may have seen it already since you begin with Sephy's portrait on the DMW. It has higher power per hit than Rush Assault but doesn't ignore defense or hit multiple enemies, so it's slightly inferior. But hey, it's a Limit Break, so it still kicks ass.
Chapter 3 - Subquest time![]
We flash forward a month later, Zack is still angsting about Angeal ditching the company. He gets a call from a mystery man and is called to see Lazard. Zack gets a new assignment - head to Genesis' hometown and locate his parents. And go with him Zack gets a special escort, Tseng of the Turks. And now we're given free reign to look around before we leave. But first...

IMPORTANT CHARACTER - Tseng
Damn Tseng, having no CC render, gotta use his art which is too long, so I gotta make the image thinner than normal...anyway, Tseng is, as I said, a Turk, and will operate as a go-between for Zack and Shinra on missions in the future. He's not a particularly interesting character, in fact I think he's entirely devoid of personality at all. I'm racking my brain trying to think of one real character trait he has...um...oh yeah, he has a crush on Aerith, like he's got a shot in world where Cloud and Zack exist. Oh, and he has a habit of not-dying, very annoying that. Stupid spotty English translations.
Tseng's DMW attack is Air Strike, where Zack phones in a Turk helicopter to blast all enemies with a machine gun, doing physical damage across the board. It's mostly useless, since you very rarely fight more than three enemies at a time, and thus Rush Assault and Octaslash are more effective in general. Later on it gets outclassed by Meteor Shots and Apocalypse which simply have higher base power.
Now it's subquest time. First, examine the locker row for a Thunder Materia. Now we can do some Missions if you like. I won't cover them in detail, but let's go over what you have open. Missions 4-1-1 through 4-2-6 are available. Completing them earns you some good Materia and items, and you'll probably level up a little. If you can complete Mission 4-2-6 you can visit the Wutai Secret Shop which sells awesome Materia, though very expensive at this point in the game. Mission 5-1-1 is a rematch against Ifrit, but he's a little bit beefier from the fight ten minutes ago, but if you had an easy time with him in round one you can handle him now. There's also Missions 6-1-1 to 6-1-6, and Missions 6-3-1 to 6-6-6 become available once you complete 6-1-6. The 6-#-# missions are very hard though, so try at your own risk and know the practical rewards, at this moment, are minimal. If you beat the Tonberry in 6-1-5, you'll unlock Missions 10-2-1 through 10-2-3, which nets you the Tonberry summon, and in 6-1-3 you can get an ATK Up Materia. I highly recommend doing Mission 8-1-1 - it's a fight against Ifrit, beat him and you get his portrait on the DMW. Doing the 4-#-# missions also can't hurt, you get good items for your efforts, but they quickly get quite challenging - in Mission 4-1-6 I got killed in one hit by the boss. As I said it's all up to you, completely optional. If you go for it replace your Fire Armlet with the Bulletproof Vest you'll win from 4-1-2, it gives a good boost to Vitality, aka Defense. I did a few of these missions and got Zack up to Level 15 with 2,000 HP thanks to a Titanium Bangle.
When you're done with missions leave the room and Kunsel will escort you to Sector 8. Look for three NPCs clustered around and approach them for a scene. They're members of fanclubs for Genesis, Sephy and Angeal. The Sephiroth fan makes mention of him "stripped down the waist", *shiver*. Join the Genesis and Angeal clubs, but Club Sephy's representative gives you the brush off. Now head north past the fountain to a new area. Turn right and speak to the Shinra grunt with the red scarf or whatever it is around his neck. After a rather pointless scene a new chain of Missions is available to us. Up ahead in the alleyway, speak to the NPC and join the LOVELESS fanclub. Head back to the first area, locate the Save Point. Take on Missions 1-2-1 through 1-2-6 now, they're rather easy especially if you were able to hold your own in the 4-#-# missions above. Mission 1-2-6 pits you against Arachno, a powerful enemy. The easiest way to defeat it is to run up behind it and wail away, it'll use an explosion attack to hit Zack several times, guard against it to reduce the damage to the 50-100 range and keep swinging. When 1-2-6 is completed head back and speak to that guard for Craftman's Monthly. Return to Shinra and speak to the woman near the stairs to get a special potion that will fully heal you and cast Raise on you, you probably need it after those missions. Go up the stairs now and take the elevators in the back up to the SOLDIER floor.
Up here there's more Missions, go to the Materia room and speak to a scientist to learn about Mako stones. This opens up Missions 8-2-1 through 8-2-6. They're not too difficult, and in 8-2-6 you can find a handy Fira Materia, don't pass that up. Furthermore, return to the Materia room with the items you receive after each mission, speak to the scientist and hand over the stones she asks for to get more Materia, including Esuna which certainly has uses. The only difficulties arise when you face Slaps in 8-2-5 that have very, very high defenses, but if you wail on them eventually they'll bite the dust.
Well, that concludes our subquests, go talk to Tseng to begin the mission when you're ready. Zack makes the cutest faces doesn't he? See ya next page, we're off to Banora Village.
