Vivian Ninetales is a character in Final Fantasy XVI. She is a resident of Cid's Hideaway, offering her knowledge of Valisthea to Clive Rosfield.
History[]
Vivian was a professor at the University of Kanver in the Free Cities of Kanver. During her tenure there, she came across a young Midadol Telamon, who had fashioned a key to enter Vivian's lecture hall after hours where she could study uninterrupted. Mid managed to convince Vivian to let her continue using the classroom for overnight studies, and even take her on as a pupil.
However, her insatiable pursuit of knowledge ran her afoul of unscrupulous peers who plotted her demise. Fortunately, Mid discovered the plot on Vivian's life, and after encouraging her to reach out to Clive, he helped Vivian escape with her life. Since then, Vivian has resided at the Hideaway, acting as a tactician and teacher to Clive in exchange for her continued protection.
She earned the moniker "Ninetales," which she likes, from her fellow scholars for her reputation to speak at length about many subjects.

Etymology[]
Vivian is derived from a Latin name of the Roman Empire period, masculine Vivianus and feminine Viviana. It is also one of the nomenclatural variations of the Arthurian legend of the Lady of the Lake, which is a name or a title used by several fairy-like enchantresses in the Matter of Britain, the body of medieval literature and mythology associated with the legend of King Arthur. This name appears in the works Arthour and Merlin and in Henry Lovelich's English Merlin Continuation.
