Viking (ヴァイキング, Vaikingu? or バイキング, Baikingu?) is a recurring job class in the Final Fantasy series that boasts immense physical strength. The job is one the fewer used jobs in the series, and derives from the Vikings of history, a term referring to the Norse explorers, warriors, merchants, and pirates who raided, traded, explored, and settled in wide areas of Europe, Asia, and the North Atlantic islands from the late 8th to the mid-11th century.

Popular conceptions of the Vikings heavily deviate from the true history; a romanticized picture of Vikings as noble savages began in the 18th century, and became widely propagated during the 19th-century. The Final Fantasy series's depictions of Vikings as a job class follows this trend, depicting them strong physically and wielding axes and hammers.

Final Fantasy III[]

The Viking is a job is gained from the Water Crystal. Vikings swing hammers and axes with ease. It is a defense-oriented job, with good HP gain per level. Its only drawback in the original Famicom version is the Viking's low accuracy, which leads to lower damage output compared to other warrior classes.

In later releases, they develop slower than other melee jobs, and are mainly used as a "tank" for their Provoke ability and access to the strongest armor.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[]

Viking is a job exclusive to the seeq race. It relies on using primarily axes and Lightning-elemental magick, and it is the closest that the seeq have to a magickal job. Viking shines for having the highest magickal defense for a seeq job, and can damage and steal items, gil, and even equipment, which is exclusive to it.

The Viking is a character available to the party, he uses the Thwack ability during battle. It unlocks at level 47.

Etymology[]

[view · edit · purge]Vikings were Norse seafarers who raided and traded from their Scandinavian homelands across wide areas of northern and central Europe, European Russia, Mediterranean littoral, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, North Atlantic islands and as far as the north-eastern coast of North America during the late 8th to late 11th centuries. The term is commonly extended to the inhabitants of Viking home communities during what has become known as the Viking Age.

Modern conceptions of the Vikings often differ from the historical sources painting a romanticized picture of noble savages. Current popular representations of the Vikings are typically based on cultural clichés.
