The bearer of this certificate has mastered combat with battle hammer and axe and is deemed worthy of the title of Master Viking.

Mastery certificate description

The Viking is a job class in Final Fantasy III gained from the Water Crystal. Vikings swing giant hammers and axes and their only drawback is that they develop slower than other melee jobs. Vikings are mainly used as a "tank" for their Provoke ability and access to the strongest armor.

Final Fantasy III marks the series's first appearance of the Viking job class.

Command ability - None

The Viking does not actually have a unique command ability, keeping the Defend command instead.

3D Remake version[]

Command ability - Provoke

The Provoke command increases the chance of a target enemy attacking the Viking. In addition, it also lowers the enemy's Defense, making them more vulnerable. It is best used when the Viking is in the back row, to minimize damage. The Viking could easily be turned into a meat shield by equipping two shields, placing it in the back row, and then using Provoke to divert all the damage to it while being healed by a White Mage. Other strategies involve combining it with a Bard to help heal it, as at job level 99, the Provoke Ability always works and reduces the enemy's defense by about 50%. In this version, Provoke can also divert magical attacks, if the affected enemy do not cast multi-target spells. Provoke always takes the first turn in battle.

The enemy's defense reduction is calculated using the following formula:

Enemy Defense = Original Defense x (100 - (0.5 x JobLv))%

Additionally, the success rate of Provoke is directly related to job level:

Special ability - Draw Attacks

The Draw Attacks command now attempts to force all enemies attacking the Viking. Like the 3D remake versions, Draw Attacks always takes the first turn in battle, and the effectiveness increases with the Viking's Job Level. However, magical attacks are no longer affected by this command.

Support Ability - Critical Defense

In critical health (below 25% of maximum HP), the Viking receives a massive damage reduction.

Etymology and allusion[]

[view · edit · purge]Vikings were Norse seafarers who raided and traded from their Scandinavian homelands across wide areas of northern and central Europe, European Russia, Mediterranean littoral, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, North Atlantic islands and as far as the north-eastern coast of North America during the late 8th to late 11th centuries. The term is commonly extended to the inhabitants of Viking home communities during what has become known as the Viking Age.

Modern conceptions of the Vikings often differ from the historical sources painting a romanticized picture of noble savages. Current popular representations of the Vikings are typically based on cultural clichés.

Every hammer used by Vikings deals lightning-element damage. This is likely a reference to Mjölnir, a magic, lightning-imbued hammer used by the Norse god of thunder, Thor.
