Vector is the Imperial capital of the Gestahlian Empire in Final Fantasy VI, and the location of the Imperial Palace and the Magitek Research Facility. The Returners come to the city after Setzer Gabbiani joins their ranks and provides them with an airship, to save the espers held in the Magitek Research Facility.

If the player enters Vector's pub, there is a man who recognizes the party as Returners and tells them about the Magitek soldier project. If the party accepts in hearing more gossip, he will tell Kefka was the first experimental Magitek knight who lost his sanity because the process was not perfected at that time. This is the only biographic data the player can find about Kefka.

Once the Magitek Research Facility has been destroyed, the entrance to the city is protected by the Guardian, and the player cannot enter.

Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)
FFVI IOS Vector Skyline

Party approaches Vector on their airship.

It is not specified if Vector existed as a city before the rise of the Empire, or if it was built at the same time as the Imperial structures surrounding it. The city is polluted and Imperial soldiers patrol the streets. The Returners come to Vector seeking to infiltrate the Magitek Research Facility and save the espers imprisoned within, one of whom is Terra Branford's father. The facility is guarded, but a Returner sympathizer helps them.

FFVI PC Empire Returners Peace

Emperor Gestahl meets the Returners.

The espers turn into magicite before the Returners can help them, but in taking away Terra's father's magicite they rouse Terra, who had morphed into an esper, and bring her back to her senses. After Terra opens the Sealed Gate espers emerge and decimate Vector killing many people. Many Narshe guards and Returner members, including Banon and Arvis, can be found in the streets, and merchants still operate. After Kefka acquires more magicite from Thamasa and he and Gestahl raise the Floating Continent, Vector and the Imperial Palace are abandoned.

Vector is destroyed in the end of the world, and in its place rises Kefka's Tower. Though much of the tower is built of dirt and debris, many areas in Kefka's Tower bear Imperial banners or esper capsules, showing that Vector, the Imperial Palace and the Magitek Factory were integrated into the tower.

Spoilers end here.

Quests

Entering the Magitek Research facility

If the player comes in contact with any of the patrolling soldiers, they enter a battle and are ejected from the city. It is advised not to stay at the inn in Vector, for it is owned by a thief who may steal 1,000 gil from the party during the night. In a house outside the inn is an old woman—if the player refuses to pledge allegiance to the Empire, she will provide free healing in place of the inn once the player defeats two Guards.

The entrance to the Imperial Palace lies in the northern part of the city, but if the player attempts to enter they are confronted by the Empire's invincible weapon, the Guardian. The Magitek Research Facility is also guarded, but a Returner sympathizer outside the entrance will help the party sneak in.
