Gems in Vagrant Story are add-ons for the player's equipment. They affect how well the equipped weapons and shields do in combat. The effects range from increasing damage against specific enemy classes to increasing the rate of evasion. Gems can only be equipped on weapons and shields. The gem slots of weapons are dependent on the grip equipped onto it. Gems do not have any effect on melee damage type (Blunt, Edged, or Piercing).

Some gems are exclusive on weapons or shields. Exclusive gems have +3 for all enemy types and +3 for all elemental affinities.
