Uses the ninja tool "shihei". Creates shadow images that each absorb a single attack directed at you.

Final Fantasy XI description

Utsusemi (空蝉, Utsusemi?, lit. Empty Shell) is a recurring ability of the Ninja job. It creates multiple images of the user that absorb attacks directed at them. It is similar to the Ninja ability Mirage and any given game will have only one of the two abilities.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy XI[]

Utsusemi is a Ninjutsu with the Japanese name (空蝉の術, Utsusemi no Jutsu?, lit. Empty Shell Technique). As such, it is a spell that consumes the ninja tool Shihei (紙兵, Shihei?, lit. Paper Soldiers) instead of MP. It grants the status effect of the same name when it is cast. Utsusemi comes in three progressively stronger and higher level versions: Utsusemi: Ichi, Utsusemi: Ni, and Utsusemi: San. More advanced versions of Utsusemi create more shadow images, each of which absorbs one physical attack. This ability to harmlessly absorb incoming attacks led players to turn Ninja into a tank job, contrary to the original intent of the design team.

Besides being used up to avoid incoming attacks, Utsusemi's shadow images can fuel other Ninja job effects, such the original version of Sange which used up shadow images to make additional Shuriken attacks and Mikage which gives one extra melee attack for each shadow image possessed. There are also ninja weapons such as Aizushintogo and Kakesu that receive a damage bonus proportional to the number of shadow images the wielder has.

Some Notorious Monsters' versions of Utsusemi have a special effect attached to them, which players can never gain: when cast, they actually create weaker independently acting copies of the same monster. These copies have lower hit points but similar abilities to the original, although they cannot create more copies of themselves in turn.

Utsusemi SOPFFO

Utsusemi is a Ninjutsu ability made available after unlocking the Ninja job. At the cost of 2 Ninja Tools, the user creates multiple "images" of the player to absorb 3 attacks.

Non-Final Fantasy guest appearances[]

Bravely series[]

In Bravely Default, Utsusemi is the job level 4 ability of the Ninja asterisk. It allows the user to evade a single physical attack.

In Bravely Second: End Layer, Utsusemi is the job level 6 command ability for the Ninja. It allows the user to evade a physical attack one time.

Etymology[]

Utsusemi (空蝉?) is Japanese for "cast-off cicada shell".
