You're a nurse, right? Edit

I'm fighting the mother of all chest colds and was wondering if you knew of any methods of mitigating it that I am not already doing. I'm taking Advair, a multivitamin and have drunk more tea in a day then the average Japanese family drinks in a year (I exaggerate for effect). If you know of any tips, please let me know. Exdeath64 02:44, January 13, 2010 (UTC)

I'm not a nurse - what made you think of that o_O? I'm aiming to become a general practitioner.
Given that there are around a hundred viruses that cause colds, there's not something you can take specifically. Just keep your immune system strong by staying warm and sleeping well. — YuanSalve!Acta 02:51, January 13, 2010 (UTC)
@Ex: Drink less tea, more water. If you have a chest cold, you need to increase your fluid intake; tea is a diarrhetic, i.e. it makes you lose fluids, so a high intake of tea is bad for you in the long run. Also, a cold is a viral infection as I recall, so multivitamins will probably have little to no effect. Instead, get actual cold medicin or paracetamol(? ask at the pharmecy) and get plenty of rest. If it persists for longer than 4-6 days, go see your doctor, it could be pneumonia or a bad enough case to require antibiotics. /common household logic --Hecko X 03:01, January 13, 2010 (UTC)
"Cold medicine" isn't recommended. Paracetamol is an analgesic - take it if you need it. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections. — YuanSalve!Acta 03:06, January 13, 2010 (UTC)
In addition to being an analgesic, it is also an antypyretic; it will help fight the fever which I assume he has due to it being "the mother of all chest colds". Additionally, if he is self-diagnosing (which I'm guessing he is...), he could be wrong, in which case it could actually be pneumonia or a bacterial cause, hence the need for a doctor and potentially antibiotics. But I yield to a higher power; you're probably right. --Hecko X 03:18, January 13, 2010 (UTC)

No fever, fortunately. I've just had the damn cough, chest tightness, and nasty green goo coming up after a few days of it. I was "diagnosed" by an ex nursing student (parent) and am fully aware that I need to see the doc (doing so on Friday). And I've been downing water as well to balance it out...and sorry about the misunderstanding, i could of sworn you where in the medical profession, must be some other user I'm thinking about... Exdeath64 05:07, January 13, 2010 (UTC)

I'm lucky I found it, I had to look at your page, then look on your contributions until i found it. Manual of Style Revamp Suggestions Edit

Opinions would be appreciated, please. Doreiku Kuroofangu 03:45, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

The unwrittenEdit

Firstly, sorry I missed the message. Me on my dynamic IP isn't supposed to commit me to the wiki. I was just supposed to join in on some wiki-related talk pages and then leave when a resolve happens. People weren't supposed to use my talk pages. D:

Secondly, I'm not really trying to hide myself. Maybe I did at first. Other than my writing style, the first give-away came with me using one my generic summaries accidentally. And more recently, I don't care, so I've only been using them. It's the attitude of ILHI that I left behind when I abandoned his name.

Thirdly, unwritten policies and rules. Okay. I don't know where to start. Our scope for Final Fantasy XI could be a nice place. We could do this on Final Fantasy XI's talk article, or the Scope article, but it's actually pretty extensive to be shared on such places.

And then there's other minor article rules. There probably needs to be an article on tables. This will need to mention the things all tables needs. Then other occasional things that may appear and when. How to use the colours, where they're applied. Anchors, gawd, people only know about these through talks with me, or other people who I have talked to. And there's the SL template too.

Article name policies? We have the OCD rule. The "the" rule. The "as full as possible" for storyline things, and the "as written" for gameplay-only articles. Then tags relate directly to this. [[Help:Tags and Disambiguation Pages]] has the tags things already, but I think it would be better on a page with article names. I'm not sure where the line between a Help page and a Project page is drawn. Helps more like a guide, like "how-to guides", whereas the Project policies are like "what to do in a situation". Or at least that's how I see it.

Hmm. Back in the day of CSM's reign, a few policies were created. Now outdated. The spoiler policy used to give the impression that the wiki was so disorganised that we don't really care. The "Sporking Wikipedia articles"'s name doesn't work so well since I re-wrote everything since we don't allow copying from Wikipedia ever, unless it's a salvage. "By the fans and for the fans" had all been changed. I rewrote that. "Be a fan and not a fanboy" is true, but doesn't really matter. It's about the "tone" we use in articles. "Please Don't Bit the Newcomers" is a Wikip-rip apparently. And I started a re-write of "Scope" back in December but I stopped. It's basically right, just not accurate to what we do today.

Anyway, point is all our old policies were outdated. So when I updated them they either half-contradicted the title, or became rather irrelevant for the wiki.

ANYWAY, links. I may look around later. I've not really helped just now. I've just ranted about what policies we could have but don't, and why our current policies don't cover anything on the wiki.

I sometimes just like to write what's on my mind so I don't have to carry it in my mind all the time. :D -- I also wanted to see what kind of policies you think there should be, or what kind of things merit policies, and what you expect. I've been talking about this for ages, yet I have no idea what structure to use, I just know what things aren't written. I've probably forgotten a lot though.

Peace. ; )

PS: Gawd, I just read how much I wrote. Sorry about that :p   17:21, April 7, 2010 (UTC)

I was just reading your userpage before I stepped on your user talk page to start writing a message where I compiled our XI policy. I saw your top ten rules of the wiki thing. These are essentially what CSM's policy pages were. Particular ones that could be built around are "Assume good faith", "There's always work" (I remember telling people this quite a lot), "The staff are just users with mops and brooms", and "We look for a consensus". I take a dislike to people "being bold". Being bold is like creating articles for every FFXI enemy. While this person has been bold, no one's caught him up, even though it's a breach of the not-well documented XI policy. There is no deadline, but that rule tells people to chill. It's nice to not have stubs. Nothing on the wiki forever is correct-ish, but when people's attitudes are "too much work"... yeah. And although I agreed with the "staff" policy, admins should be people who take a great interest in the wiki, and should be present on anything at all important to the wiki. While their opinion technically isn't as important as anyone else's, it as at the same time. Their opinions are usually more educated than some other users. It's the top-tier users who will have the best justifications. One read of the DNC... just one. :p

I'll try to compile the complete XI policy quickly. I'll also link to the sources with each statement. I'm pretty sure we have most of it contained in one place, but we might not. 20:59, April 7, 2010 (UTC)

XI policy

I'm missing at least one talk page. I'll just post the links now. After more searching I'll construct the policy.

Oh, okay, apparently I only have one. I thought I had two, but then I realised it said nothing interesting. The FFXI spell infobox talkpage just had discussions about how to use it, if to use it. Nothing about ability page structure and where to put them. 21:45, April 7, 2010 (UTC) Found it, now it's late.

Gawd, I feel like I've just made a mess of your talk page. ;p 22:20, April 7, 2010 (UTC)

XI policy (no really)
The main aims of the Final Fantasy Wiki are to give comprehensive coverage of the Final Fantasy, including every entry to the main-series, spin-offs, sequels, prequels, and related titles. As a main-series game, Final Fantasy XI deserves a level of credit close to other entries to the main-series. As the beautiful world of Vana'diel is so big, the wiki does not aim to be as comprehensive as FFXIclopedia. FFXIclopedia exists to help existing players play the game and gather very specific information. It should be our goal here to provide those who have NO experience with Final Fantasy XI an overview, not so much because they will ever actually play the game, but so that they can see just how this game relates to the rest of the series and so they can gain at least some appreciation for the glory and beauty of the world of Vana'diel.[1]

To keep the optimum coverage of the game, while not letting Final Fantasy XI articles overgrowing the rest of the wiki, article numbers are left at a minimum while still covering everything. Enemies are covered on articles centering around their genus, for example. Individual enemies still have entries on parent articles and disambiguation pages, and redirects aim to serve the purpose of directing users to the information.(pretty lame writing, I know)

h2 - Jobs

All playable jobs get their own article. --I think I remember you doing a plan for job articles. Subpages for abilities and stuff. I've never been too far into job articles

h2 - Characters

Every named character in Vana'diel warrants its own article. And these are formatted like any other character article. And all of these should be listed on List of Final Fantasy XI Characters.(not much more to say)

h2 - Races

(being lazy now) Every race gets an article.

h2 - Locations

Locations get article, sub-locations are mentioned in that article and redirects are made.

h2 - Enemies

An article is created for every genus, and an article is created for every Notorious Monster that grants a title after defeat.[1] Nope, it's not High Notorious Monster anymore, this is as said in one of Adonzo's messages far down the page, FFXIclopedia are confused. also bosses too, but i don't know what bosses are

Race articles should contain an intro mentioning the appearance of the enemies, their fighting style, and other things shared by the race. There should be a h2 called "Enemies" or "Members", or along those lines. In this section, each member should get a h3, which has an infobox mentioning their abilities (and linking to the anchors on the page), element and status immunities, and then splits for different zones, and their levels, drops and steal data.

Examples of how this could be displayed

Abilities Vulnerabilities Status immunities Location Level Steal Drop
Deadly Hold; Great Sandstorm; Great Whirlwind; Heat Breath; Riddle; Tail Smash; Tail Swing Fire (Resist)
Wind (Resist)
Water (Weak)
Sleep; Charm; Aspir Western Altepa Desert 62 None None
Midgar 41 Eastern Scimitar (112%)
Nefertiti Bow (078%)

or we could get forget the rowspans, and do it like this:

Eastern Sphinx
Abilities Vulnerabilities Status immunities
Deadly Hold; Great Sandstorm; Great Whirlwind; Heat Breath; Riddle; Tail Smash; Tail Swing Fire (Resist); Wind (Resist); Water (Weak) Sleep; Charm; Aspir
Location Level Steal Drop
Western Altepa Desert 62 None None
Midgar 41 Eastern Scimitar (112%)
Nefertiti Bow (078%)

or we could do what do something similar to Template:FFXI Enemies, 'cept it's massive

After the infobox is prose.

Then there is another h2 for Abilities. This is just a table, listing all their abilities, with anchors. It doesn't have to list which enemy uses which, since that is done earlier. Columns should include whatever we have on any FFXI abilities article tbh, and a description section. And it can use sortables (with unsortable being applied to description).

h2 - Abilities

The agreement, I think, was that there is a List of Job Abilities article (or, just List of Abilities) that mains the Job article's ability anchor/subpage. And a List of Enemy Abilities article that does exactly the same to enemy genus's ability anchor. Job articles list their abilities on them. Enemy genus articles list their abilities on them. If there is ever two things in FFXI that have the same ability then an article is created. If an ability exists in other places in the series, then the XI thing gets an entry on the parent. It should be a disambig. The abilities that don't have a page redirect to anchors on the specified enemy or job article. [1]

Spells are included in abilities.

I think it was the agreement for the "List of Final Fantasy XI Abilities" and "List of Final Fantasy XI Enemy Abilities" to exist, but to main all the links to the job/enemy articles, right?

h2 - Equipment/Items

List of Weapons, List of Armor, List of Accessories(?), List of Items. These are very comprehensive (and by that, I mean long) lists, split into subpages. Each entry is anchored. For each weapon, a redirect is made if there is only one appearance. It is added to a disambig, but if the disambig then has four entries, a parent is made. If a parent exists than an entry is added to it. If similar weapons exist, such as appending a letter to the end of the weapon name, then these also go on parents, but not on disambigs. This is essentially how every other games function.

The current List of articles aren't like they should be since they don't include stats.

h2 - Terminology

This hasn't been decided.

This is not final. This is me trying to piece it together. All on your talk page, *evil laugh*. --Also, next to each section we should probably lead to an exemplar article. We don't have any at the moment though. If you didn't want me to do anything like this, and only wanted me to list some talk pages, how could you not see this coming? I have to be far more involved in everything than anyone else. It's me.-- :D 23:12, April 7, 2010 (UTC)

Darn it, Jon (I've decided to call you that. It doesn't feel right using your old name), you beat me to it while I was tramping around old caves today! I was planning on setting up a draft version in my sandbox. By locations, I assume you mean areas and zones, which seems fine. The only thing I have a quibble with is characters and spells, the latter of which it seems will be solved by the current MoS debate.
Actually, spells may be a lesser problem, seeing as a large number of them are shared between jobs (RDM/WHM, WHM/PLD, BLM/RDM etc). The biggest problem we have here is Blue Magic. I'm tempted to give them their own articles, because of enemy lists and the like. It could go either way.
Abilities and jobs have been managed (it's a list of abilities main page with mostly stats, then more in depth prose subpages for jobs, by the way). Characters - not so sure on this. Minor, single quest NPCs or people like this guy are perhaps better dealt with in location and mission articles, I feel.
I could sit here for a while elaborating on the guidelines (not policies) on my user page, but let's keep it short and simple. Nothing is forever is about consensuses, because what we agree on the wiki changes all the time, as we can aptly see here ;). Admins are just users with mops and brooms: while they and their opinions are often given more respect, it should be because they've worked on the wiki for a long time and know the ins and outs, not simply because they have a banhammer. Finally, while I dislike the current English spelling practice used on this wiki, just as I dislike English's annoying lack of a neuter singular third person pronoun (stop me before I go on a linguistics rant), I also use it in mainspace articles, except when I forget. Non-mainspace is fair game!
The walls of text were expected, trust me :p. — YuanSalve!Acta 09:57, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
Guidelines, policies, help articles... the line is blurry to me.
By spelling practise, do you mean "what was there first"? Because it was accepted by everyone on the page (I think) where it was discussed to use American English. Project:About.
I'm not sure how Blue Magic works in XI, but won't at least most of them also be enemy abilities? I've forgotten how Blue Magic works in XI. Being an enemy ability and a job ability warrants an article since you can't redirect to one or the other.
Single-quest NPCs: Add them on the List of Characters page under a "Minor characters" section, and add an anchor. Redirect to the anchor. After their name should be a short description which will link to the location and mission articles. I had no idea how "minor" the characters went. In an online game... I wouldn't know.
And to say "Jon"'s fine would be a lie. Gawd, even when I say it like that, I don't spell it like that. "Jonathan", "John", perhaps "Jonny", or "Bedford". Any of those. Or "the legendary IP". That works too. 15:03, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
I was about to write an XI enemy genus article when I realised I don't understand. Do all members of a race have the exact same abilities? And Notorious Monsters have random additional abilities? So unlike the Tactics games, all enemies in a genus have all abilities belonging to that genus, rather than some having an ability, and others not within a genus? 23:30, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
I know John's and Jonny's already, so you got saddled with "Jon". :p I meant the AE policy (policies are set, guidelines are just that - they're guidelines. Advice), which frustrates me to no end, because I don't think everyone realises what AE can actually mean. What do we do with prepositions? What about usage governing quotation marks and punctuation? Do we always use singular collective nouns? How about specific word use that varies between countries?
By minor NPCs, I mean those that have maybe one line of dialogue. They have names, but they just populate the world of FFXI. Abilities may not be shared between all members of a family. — YuanSalve!Acta 23:44, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
Do everything the US way. The policy is to use the most-recent US name for things on the wiki. I'm not sure how grammar and punctuation work differently in the US, but that also has a lot to do with me not knowing how to use grammar and punctuation in British English.
Yeah, so minor characters that don't have a role larger than a single quest get titled "Minor characters", and are listed under a "Minor characters" section on the List of Characters article, but they have no links, but are anchors so they can still be linked to. I don't know, is "characters that are involved in two or more quests" a good line to draw between characters having an article, and not.
Also, I intended to source information for enemy articles from FFXIclopedia. Yet they don't say which abilities each individual enemy uses. They just give a genus's abilities on the genus page. Unless I'm overlooking something fairly obvious. 23:59, April 8, 2010 (UTC)
"Doing everything the US way" is the problem, when not everyone knows what that way is, and the US itself can't seem to be make up its mind :p. Tidus plays on a team in the US, and in a team in Britain. His team is winning in the US, and are winning in Britain. I don't know how acceptable the alternate usage is in each country, nor for things like burnt/burned. Either way we choose, we make a mess for "Grammar Nazis", (look, British use here with the comma outside instead of inside!) and gnomes to clean up. Too minor to care about? I know you will, John. :p
NM's often have different abilities, if I remember correctly. — YuanSalve!Acta 00:12, April 9, 2010 (UTC)
I just updated the Enemies section. I'm not going to create one. I clearly underestimated how much information the XIclopedia has. I am not experienced enough to create them. And I don't want to hang around for too long. I've just been reminded why I left, and at the moment I'm in too deep in the wiki, since I only came here to change the Location article layout. 16:17, April 12, 2010 (UTC)
Do you still want the Before Crisis translations? I feel guilty for being tardy, but it's actually my holiday right now, so I'm trying to work up the mental will to translate pages in a subject I left behind. — YuanSalve!Acta 09:18, April 13, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, it would be helpful to have them. ;) 14:08, April 13, 2010 (UTC)

Name Translations... Edit

Japanese knowing ladyEdit

I'm trying to make a Final Fantasy VII location article perfect. Something which has never been done before. Mainly because we don't do location articles very well, and also our VII coverage isn't ever very good with locations, and VII locations are also Before Crisis locations, which means they'll never be perfect.

Anyway, I chose Nibelheim because it just didn't have any information to start with other than the story section. So I decided to search my only BC-VII- source (which isn't that good). I found five pages with the Nibelheim Japanese on it.

Now I can understand the general gist, but I don't get it all.

  • [1] - doesn't mention anything of Nibelheim other than its name. So I don't need this translated.
  • [2] - I think these are just events that happen here. A few fights, and the way to get there. Sounds important.
  • [3] - Something about a four-round tournament. I can see who all the opponents are, but I can't make sense out of why/where the tournament's happening.
  • [4] - Something about the Shadow stuff of the game... something about Shinra Mansion? And five floors?
  • [5] - Some sort of mission criteria for the previous page?

Any help? 22:39, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Re: Peanut Gallery Edit

I will reply to you in the same format as the original post:

Firstly, I will attempt to bear that in mind, but no promises.

Secondly, it may have been on honest question, but it came across as a sarcastic remark/rhetorical question. Again, I got the impression that you hadn't read the entirety of my post, and I stand corrected on that. Also, with regards to anger, well... some people like depressing music, some people like happy-go-lucky music, and I like angry music. Why? Don't know. I just do. And with poetry, I was referring more to actual poetry as a form of literature in general than to music, in that instance.

By the way, I had no way of knowing your gender over the internet. King Nothing Speak now, vermin! 12:48, May 3, 2010 (UTC)

Banhammer: a very funny-sounding word, but it wouldn't affect me THAT much, since I spend most of my time on the Kingdom Hearts Fanon Wiki anyways. I'm basically around here for the DNC, and to write walkthroughs on an irregular basis. And just for reference, that's the first time I've called another user a jackass. I've insulted others before, but they really, REALLY deserved it. Seriously, there was more two-facedness about than you'd be able to find in a Batman comic!

It seemed clear to me. Granted, that seems to be a frequent problem where I'm concerned. I understand that the general discussion was about music, but when I made the remark that I hate poetry, I was referring to literature (read: books). Clearly, I failed to specify that. In that context, I was referring to stuff like Shakespeare (I'll admit he's brilliant, but not my cup of tea). Anyhow, my preferred form of literature is the novel, and science fiction or "sword-and-sorcery" (also called "epic fantasy", though that's very specific and sometimes over-used), and in the prose form. Robert Frost, as another example of a poet, again, is brilliant, but that doesn't mean I like his work. Poetry in general just doesn't really sit right with me.

The actual word I used was "preference", but I won't use my banhammer for that (oh wait, this isn't my KHFW, so I don't have a banhammer. NEVER MIND!!!). At any rate, let's use the example of the Lords of the Higher Worlds in the Elric Saga (written by Michael Moorcock, I highly suggest (boldfaced because it's only a suggestion) that you read it). The Lords of the Higher Worlds (i.e. GODS) are in two groups: Law and Chaos. Law stands for order and progress (generally classified as "good"), while Chaos (often considered "evil") stands for infinite diversity in all things. I find that I would stand with Chaos, because I enjoy a bit major overload of madness/insanity/darkness now and then. Metal and thrash are the best mediums that help me identify with that. To recite a line from "King Nothing" (Metallica's Load album): "Are you satisfied?" King Nothing Speak now, vermin! 15:47, May 3, 2010 (UTC)

Again, no one is able to offer me valid reasoning as to why they hate poetry as a whole. — YuanSalve!Acta 21:52, May 3, 2010 (UTC)

I haven't read any of the previous tries at explanations, Yuan, so please tell me if I'm off-topic. But my guess is that many people don't like poetry because it's hard to understand, sometimes. You have to analyse what is said to get the meaning. Much harder than the usual story-telling novel. KujaRhapsodos 22:07, May 3, 2010 (UTC)

That was a comment on people answering this as a whole. Lots of people have said they dislike poetry, but never why. Poetry is so diverse, and certainly not all of it is difficult to understand. — YuanSalve!Acta 05:39, May 4, 2010 (UTC)

I dislike it because, although I can usually analyze the words to find the meaning, I find it so tedious that I rarely bother, and prefer to stick with clear-cut fiction. King Nothing Speak now, vermin! 11:21, May 5, 2010 (UTC)

That's really more of a point against all opaque writing, not poetry... — YuanSalve!Acta 05:11, May 6, 2010 (UTC)

Does it include poetry? Yes? Then I find myself feeling relatively vindicated. No? Then I feel that no further discussion is necessary, since I have no other input at this time. King Nothing Speak now, vermin! 11:32, May 6, 2010 (UTC)

Help Edit

A friend will be sending me some scans from the 20th Anniversary Character Ultimania concerning the FF6 guys, and I was wondering if maybe I could recruit you to translate if I pass them on to you? If you're too busy, know anyone else who could help? Doreiku Kuroofangu 23:45, May 4, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm too busy at the moment. Try Bluer. — YuanSalve!Acta 05:11, May 6, 2010 (UTC)
