Unicorn is an esper in Final Fantasy VI who can be acquired as a magicite.

Profile[]

Unicorn appears as a white equine creature with a horn, similar to a mythological unicorn.

Story[]

Unicorn was one of several espers captured by the Gestahlian Empire during their first raid on the esper world. The captive espers were taken back to the Magitek Research Facility at Vector, and for sixteen years they were experimented on and had their magic drained to develop the Empire's Magitek army.

When the Returners infiltrated the facility and shut down the machinery draining the espers, they were too late to save them. With too much of their energy drained, they transformed into magicite and entrusted themselves to the Returners.

Gameplay[]

Unicorn costs 30 MP to summon and casts Healing Horn (Heal Horn in the Super NES and PlayStation versions) to cast Esuna on the party, curing them of certain status ailments: darkness, poison, petrify, silence, confuse, sap, sleep, slow, and stop on the entire player party. It does not provide any stat boosts upon leveling up.

Unicorn can be a useful esper when facing bosses that prominently use status ailments, as there is no comparable ability to cure the party of ailments. The drawback is that it is only being usable once per battle, and would be best saved for dire circumstances.

Magicite[]

Unicorn is a mixed bag in terms of the spells it teaches. Seraph teaches both Cura and Esuna faster, but the only other esper to teach Dispel is Alexander, who is not acquired until late in the World of Ruin after a difficult sidequest through the Dreamscape. While it takes a long time to learn Dispel from Unicorn, it can be worth it to acquire Dispel earlier, as Dispel can be useful against bosses that use beneficial status magic.
