Underground Test Site, labeled the Shinra Underground Test Site on-screen, is a field map in Final Fantasy VII Remake, taking place in the Shinra Underground Test Site below Sector 7. It is explored primarily by Barret Wallace, but also by Tifa Lockhart and Cloud Strife who rejoin later in the quest.
The Underground Test Site is visited during chapter 13, "A Broken World", starting with the quest "In Solitude", as Barret searches for a way to escape after stumbling across it. It can also be revisited in chapter 14, "In Search of Hope", for the sidequest "Subterranean Menace".
Layout[]
The Underground Test Site can be entered either through the S7-6 Service Tunnel's Power Substation - Restricted Area from a ladder, or through the Sector 7 Slums' Cave-In.
Underground Test Site - B6[]
Visited at the start of "In Solitude", floor B6 contains three sub-areas: the Waste Processing Chamber, the Researcher Access, and Type-C Specimens - Nursery.
Shooting at boxes nets random items.
The Waste Processing Chamber is a small room with a bench and vending machine. When first visited during "In Solitude", rubble must be shot to open a path into the Researcher Access. This is a long tunnel through an underground cave that leads to the Type C Specimens - Nursery. Along the way, bugaboos and wererats are fought. Several boxes are found on shelves, and can be opened by shooting them with Barret's gun-arm. At the south end, before taking the path down to the Type C Specimens - Nursery, rubble can be shot on the right to create a path to a chest with 2,000 gil.
The Type-C Specimens - Nursery is a short area with a few cages either side, and a ladder leading up to B5. Bloodhounds are initially fought.
Underground Lab - B5[]
Healing carcanet treasure.
B5 contains only a Researcher Access tunnel. From the left of the entrance to the tunnel (northwest on the map) is a set of rubble that can be destroyed to create a path to a chest with a healing carcanet. Around the main tunnel path are several gorgers and bugaboos. At the end of the tunnel is a ladder up to B4, though a fan must be shot and destroyed to create a path to it.
Upon revisiting during chapter 14, the ladder down to B6 is removed, and a gap through a damaged door leads to a new area, the Type-B Specimens - Isolation Zone.
Underground Lab - B4[]
As with B4, the area comprises another Researcher Access tunnel, where wererats and bugaboos are fought. At the end, a staircase leads up to B2.
Upon revisiting during chapter 14, ringmaws are fought.
Underground Lab - B3[]
B3 contains only another Researcher Access tunnel that leads up to a staircase to B2. Little is contained here aside from the usual crates that can be destroyed on shelves.
Underground Test Site - B2[]
A larger area containing the Type-F Specimens - Creche and Type-D Specimens - Creche, comprising several walkways around cages for monsters. "Reunite with Tifa" occurs here, as Barret must destroy a bugaboo nest by climbing the top of a staircase and shoot down a crane to destroy it.
Throughout the area, bugaboos are fought. Between the Type-F Specimens - Creche and Type-D Specimens - Creche are three fans through tunnels, which must be destroyed to break through. Only the middle tunnel creates a path through, while the right tunnel leads to a cage with breakable crates, and the left tunnel leads to a treasure chest with an ether bottle. After entering, a few cages further in, which must be opened by shooting the doors, contain items: one contains an 
Ice Materia orb, while another contains a chest with a turbo ether. Further up the staircase left, another cage contains a 
Warding Materia. A ladder leads up to B1.
In the northwest end, a ladder leads up to a platform where a Monodrive and a Cutter are fought. Another ladder then leads northeast to a series of walkways and platformers, across which varghidpolises, bloodhounds, and bugaboos are fought, and at the end, a staircase leads to the Break Room.
Upon revisiting in chapter 14, the varghidpolises, a wrath hound, Mark II Monodrives, and a Sweeper are fought in the Type-D Specimens - Creche, and bloodhounds in the Type-F Specimens - Creche area.
Underground Test Site - B1[]
B1 comprises three subareas: the Break Room, another Researcher Access tunnel, and a Specimen Testing Area. B1 can be accessed from the Sector 7 Collapsed Plate Area.
The Break Room is a small concrete room with a vending machine, which sells 
Main Theme of FFVII, and a bench. In chapter 14, this is the only area of B1 that is available, and it can be reached through a ladder from the Sector 7 Collapsed Plate Area's Power Substation - Prohibited Area.
Specimen Testing Area.
Further in B1 is the Researcher Access tunnel, a small metal tunnel linking the Break Room, the exit, and the Specimen Testing Area. The Specimen Testing Area is a vast arena where the Failed Experiment and Unknown Entity enemies are fought during a boss battle.

A Broken World[]
The Underground Test Site is explored primarily by Barret throughout its quests, though Tifa rejoins soon. The two fight several monsters held within the underground laboratory, before eventually fighting the Failed Experiment held in a large testing area.
In Search of Hope[]
The Underground Test Site is returned to by a party of Cloud, Barret, and Tifa, as they must fight the Type-0 Behemoth in the Type-B Specimens - Isolation Zone on floor B5. Throughout the dungeon, many enemies fought as normal encounters were the main targets of previous quests.

During chapter 13, a variety of enemies are fought throughout the dungeon by Barret, and later Tifa. Some can be defeated simply with Barret's Overcharge, though others are more durable. At the end of the dungeon, the Failed Experiment and Unknown Entities are fought as a boss battle.
In chapter 14, different encounters are fought, including those that were the main targets of previous quests.
