Unbridled Strength is an ability for Tifa in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and one of her two default abilities alongside Focused Strike. It consumes one ATB charge to increase her chi, which allows her to cycle between three techniques: Whirling Uppercut (強打, Kyōda?, lit. Bash), Omnistrike (爆裂拳, Bakuretsuken?, lit. Exploding Fist), and Rise and Fall (掌打ラッシュ, Shōda Rasshu?, lit. Palm Strike Rush). These martial techniques take the place of her unique ability, and increase bonus stagger damage an enemy can receive.
Using Unbridled Strength will cause Tifa to briefly enter a battle stance pose, engulfing herself in energy. Whirling Uppercut is an uppercut punch to a single target, Omnistrike is a shoulder bash that deals area-of-effect damage, while Rise and Fall causes her to leap towards a target with kicks.
In addition to Unbridled Strength, Tifa can unlock folios that give her a chance to enter battle with a second chi level before using Unbridled Strength. Some of her weapon passives can also improve Unbridled Strength's martial arts techniques.
Introduced in Rebirth is the Unfettered Fury ability, an ability that acts as an alternative to Tifa's Unbridled Strength by granting her magic-based attacks instead of physical attacks, as it boosts her chi. Otherwise, the Unbridled Strength ability returns from Final Fantasy VII Remake, as do its three martial arts techniques.
Mechanics[]
Using Unbridled Strength consumes an ATB charge to advance Tifa's chi level for a duration. As her chi level advances, she will cycle to the next martial technique in the progression, and increase the number of attacks in Tifa's regular attack combo. The remaining time on her chi level is indicated by a gauge appearing over the unique ability name; before it depletes, she must either use her technique or perform Unbridled Strength again to refill it.
Whirling Uppercut.
Whirling Uppercut is an uppercut attack that increases stagger bonus damage by +5%. Though its damage on its own is minimal, it regains ATB for her other attacks, can launch enemies into the air upon interrupting them, and launches herself. As such, it is a means of setting up other abilities, or a cheap way to boost stagger bonus damage.
Omnistrike is a single, powerful attack, which deals good damage and increases stagger bonus damage by +25%. The ability has lower ATB regain, but higher burst damage.
Rise and Fall comprises four hits, each dealing decent damage and increase stagger bonus damage by +5%, for a total of +20%. It regains ATB for Tifa at a high rate.
Reaching a chi level of 3 and using the abilities successively will deal heavy damage, with a total increase in stagger bonus damage by +50%.
Unbridled Strength and Unfettered Fury can be used interchangeably. For example, if Tifa uses Unbridled Strength to boost her chi level to 2, Unfettered Fury can then be used to boost it to chi level 3, replacing her attacks with its effects.
Use[]
The Unbridled Strength mechanic is core to Tifa's playstyle of performing attacks in combos, and dealing burst damage to staggered targets. Its three techniques are effective at staggering a pressured enemy quickly, and even more effective against a staggered enemy, as the ability to boost an enemy's bonus stagger damage is rare.[note 1] Therefore, it is typically best to use Unbridled Strength to reach her maximum chi level early, prepared for when an enemy is staggered, to then burst down against them.
Tifa's Unbridled Strength martial techniques deal damage comparable to other weapon abilities that cost an ATB charge. This enables her to combo them with her weapon abilities to deal burst damage in a short space of time. A basic combo is using Whirling Uppercut into her Divekick ability, which cuts the animation time on Divekick and performs it more quickly. One example of a combo at a higher chi level is using Starshower—an attack which increases damage that Tifa's next attack deals—before Omnistrike or Rise and Fall for burst damage.
Once Tifa acquires True Strike, it should be interspaced between Unbridled Strength techniques against staggered foes. True Strike boosts stagger damage by +20%, while the three Unbridled Strength attacks not only do this, but also regain ATB. Especially if combined with using the United Refocus for an extra ATB slot, this allows her to quickly use True Strike to deplete her ATB charges, fill them back rapidly with the Unbridled Strength techniques, and perform more.
Some equipment and materia setups can enhance Unbridled Strength. The
First Strike Materia or
Whistlewind Scarf can allow her to instantly use Unbridled Strength upon beginning battle.
ATB Boost Materia can double this to two charges to begin battle or grant ATB mid-battle to get off an Unbridled Strength quickly. Aside from this,
ATB Assist Materia,
ATB Stagger Materia, and
Skill Master Materia can all help Tifa boost her ATB in various ways.
The Unbridled Strength martial arts techniques deal physical damage, meaning they rely on Tifa's naturally high
Strength. As an alternative, using Unfettered Rage will instead give her abilities (and basic attacks) that are magic-based, and can be used against opponents who resist physical damage.
Notes[]
- ↑ Aside from Tifa's Unbridled Strength martial arts techniques, the only abilities that can boost an enemy's stagger bonus damage are her True Strike, Aerith's Ray of Judgment, and Cait Sith's Moogle Knuckle, and the latter two have much smaller boosts than Tifa can provide.
