Umaro is recruitable as a party member in Final Fantasy VI. He is a Berserker who cannot be controlled directly in battle, but the player can affect his likelihood of using certain attacks by his relics.
Umaro cannot equip any magicite.
Stats[]
Stats[]
Umaro has all-around good stats. His Strength, Stamina, Defense and Magic Defense are the highest in the game by far, and his Speed and Magic are mediocre.

Equipment[]
Umaro is permanently equipped with a Bone Club and a Snow Scarf, and his normal equipment cannot be changed. The only equipment the player can change on Umaro are his relics. Umaro has two unique relics that change what attacks he can perform in battle, the Berserker Ring (Rage Ring in the original SNES release) and the Blizzard Orb. He has no ultimate weapon in the Dragons' Den, but there is a third exclusive relic: the Bone Wrist.
The magical attack Umaro gains from equipping the Blizzard Orb is not very useful, so it is better to use him with the Berserker Ring and another relic, preferably a Hyper Wrist or a Gauntlet; the Gauntlet boosts Umaro's damage more than the Hyper Wrist, but the Gauntlet comes in limited quantities and may be put to better use on someone else. If used with the Blizzard Orb, Umaro can make good use of a Hero's Ring to boost his physical and magical damage. When the player acquires the Bone Wrist in the Dragon's Den, it can replace either the Hyper Wrist or the Hero's Ring, as the Bone Wrist offers both of their effects and more. Umaro can equip the Master's Scroll, but it will only augment his normal attacks, not his special attacks, so it is better used on other characters.
Abilities[]
As a Berserker, Umaro will act on his own in battle and cannot be given commands. According to the Final Fantasy III Nintendo Player's Guide, Umaro's special ability is named Rage.[1] Umaro's two default attacks are a normal attack and Body Blow, where he throws himself at an enemy, ignoring defense. With the Berserker Ring equipped, Umaro may throw an ally with Body Blow instead of himself. This also ignores defense, but the power of Body Blow is determined by the thrown ally's equipment instead of Umaro's. If the thrown character is affected by sleep or confuse, they take priority to be thrown and will be cured afterward. When the Blizzard Orb is equipped, Umaro can use Snowstorm, an ice-elemental magic attack with 100 power that hits all enemies.
The odds of Umaro using each attack are as follows:
Relic | Attack | Body Blow | Throw Ally | Snowstorm |
---|---|---|---|---|
None | 62% (159/255) | 38% (96/255) | — | — |
Berserker Ring | 37% (95/255) | 25% (64/255) | 38% (96/255) | — |
Blizzard Orb | 37% (95/255) | 25% (64/255) | — | 38% (96/255) |
Berserker Ring Blizzard Orb |
25% (63/255) | 25% (64/255) | 25% (64/255) | 25% (64/255) |
Umaro is able to use his special attacks while afflicted with Imp and zombie; in the latter case he may throw an ally at another ally or even himself. Umaro can still use Body Blow and Throw Ally even if riding a Magitek armor (possible if brought to Cyan's dream). If Umaro has the Black Belt, he may counterattack with any attack he can perform.
Umaro's high physical power make him an effective attacker, but he suffers from being unable to support the party if they need it. The Cultists' Tower is a good place to bring Umaro because he will be unaffected by the field around the tower that restricts the party to using magic, and Umaro's physical attacks can be very powerful against enemies. Umaro can make a good teammate for Cyan, as he will continue to act while Cyan charges his Bushido gauge. Umaro can be a good choice for fighting on Dragon's Neck Coliseum due to his high strength and limited movepool making him more reliable than other party members.
Because Umaro cannot cast magic or summon espers, he has no use for MP. In the SNES and GBA releases, and ports based on them, Umaro's MP is not initialized in battle: this means attacks that affect MP such as Osmose and Rasp have no effect on him. In the Pixel Remaster port, Umaro still has no use for MP, but is vulnerable to attacks that affect MP. This allows allies to use Osmose on him to restore their own MP if using Osmose on an enemy is not a viable option.
Boss[]
Umaro is fought under the name Yeti in the Yeti's Cave in the World of Ruin. Unused data for a weaker version of the Yeti, possibly intended to be fought in the World of Balance, exists in the game data.
Quests[]
Recruitment[]
In the World of Ruin, Umaro is found at the end of the Yeti's Cave in Narshe Cliffs, past where Valigarmanda is located. He is fought as a boss, and once defeated, becomes tame. If the player has Mog in the party, Umaro joins the party. Umaro can be recruited if the player returns to the room they fought him with Mog, if they did not originally have him when fighting Umaro.
Recruiting Umaro in the mobile/Steam version earns the Bone Carver achievement.
