The following article is based on a subject that has not been officially named in any official Square Enix material; the current title is merely a placeholder.
Tournesol is the ultimate greatsword in Final Fantasy XII.

An Ultimate Weapon is a type of weapon that often has special properties most other weapons do not, and it is often held to be one of the most powerful weapons in the game. Each character or job usually has one ultimate weapon, and ultimate weapons are almost always unique and one-of-a-kind in their world, and are not available in shops. Such weapons usually require some sort of optional task to be completed in order to acquire them.

Appearances

Final Fantasy

The game's ultimate weapon was originally the Masamune, which was the most powerful weapon in the game (and the only weapon that could have been equipped by every Job Class - at the time), but in the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary versions of Final Fantasy, the game's ultimate weapons can be found in the optional Soul of Chaos dungeons, and most are found after defeating a boss.

The Ragnarok is the Knight's most powerful job-exclusive weapon in the game, and can be obtained by defeating Shinryu in the bottom floor of the Lifespring Grotto (although it's power is inferior to the Masamune).

The Lightbringer is the Red Wizard's most powerful weapon, and is obtained after defeating Deathgaze in the last floor of the Whisperwind Cove.

The Judgment Staff is the Black Wizard's ultimate weapon, and can be obtained after defeating Atomos on the 10th floor of the Lifespring Grotto.

The Assassin Dagger is the strongest dagger for the Ninja, but the dagger is surpassed by the Lust Dagger, found in the Labyrinth of Time in the PSP remake.

The Ultima Weapon is the most powerful weapon in the Dawn of Souls edition, and can be found in a chest near the site of where Deathgaze was defeated in the last floor of the Whisperwind Cove. Its power is based on the wielder's current HP, and can be equipped by any Job Class.

The Barbarian Sword is the game's most powerful weapon (it is from the PSP version of the game), and surpasses the Ultima Weapon in strength, but can only be equipped by Warriors, Knights, Red Mages and Red Wizards. Template:Sec-stub

Final Fantasy II

Each playable character has an ultimate weapon and that weapon is exclusive to them, even though any character can equip any weapon. They are obtained in the Arcane Labyrinth by using certain Key Terms suited to the character whos weapon you want to get and then travelling to the arcane labyrinth where the player must fight Phrekyos and then give Deumion a key term.

Firion's Ultimate weapon is the sword Ragnarok and grants him a 99 bonus to strength and agility.

Maria's Ultimate weapon is the Artemis Bow which grants a 99 bonus to magic and Intelligence.

Guy's Ultimate weapon is the axe Gigantaxe and grants a 99 bonus to strength and stamina.

Minwu has two Ultimate weapon's, one in the normal game and one in the Soul of Rebirth bonus dungeon and are called the Staff of Light and the Stardust Rod respectively.

Gordon's Ultimate weapon is the spear Gungnir.

Final Fantasy III

Many of the game's ultimate weapons can be found in Eureka, an optional dungeon located in the Crystal Tower. These weapons are normally the most powerful weapons that can be equipped by a Job class.

The Ragnarok is the most powerful sword in the game, and is obtained after defeating the Guardian. It has an Attack power of 140, and increases all stats by 5.

The Excalibur is one of the most powerful swords in the game, increasing all stats by 5, and has an attack stat of 137, but can only be used by the Knight. It is guarded by the General.

The Moonring Blade is the most powerful boomerangs in the game, and can be obtained after defeating Amon. It has a power of 110.

The Masamune is the most powerful Dark Blade in the game, and can only be obtained by defeating Kunoichi. It has an attack stat of 132, and increases the wielder's Agility by 10.

The Gungnir is the game's most powerful spear, and is unique in that it is a weapon that must be stolen from Odin. The weapon is notable due to the fact that the Thief is required to have a Job level of 71.

The Legendary Smith*(Full weapons list on the Legendary Smith's page) is exclusive to the DS remake, and after obtaining the Ultima Weapon from her, she will wander the world, and upon encounter, if you have a Job at Level 99, she will give you a piece of equipment exclusive to the class. *(You must complete the Mognet mission, Fixing Sara's Pendant to be able to gain the items) Template:Sec-stub

Final Fantasy V

In Final Fantasy V, there are twelve weapons knowns as "Sealed Weapons" which are held in Kuza, the Sealed Castle. Boomerang is the only weapon type not to have its corresponding Sealed Weapon. Finest Fantasy for Advance version adds more weapons to the Sealed Temple.

Apollo's Harp can be wielded by Bards and Freelancers only, has 42 Attack, deals extra damage against the Undead and Demons, and ignores row.

The Excalibur can be used by Freelancers, Mystic Knights, Red Mages, Blue Mages, and Knights, boosts Attack by 107 and Strength by 5, and is Holy-elemental.

The Sage Staff can be used by Freelancers, White Mages, Time Mages, Red Mages, Chemists, Oracles, and Mimes. It only has 50 Attack, but raises the power of Holy-elemental attacks while equipped, deals double damage to the Undead, and casts Raise when used as an item.

Masamune, used by Freelancers, Gladiators, and Samurais, has a 15% chance of critical hits, causes the user to always go first, has 104 Attack, and casts Haste when used as an item.

The Magus Rod, wielded by Freelancers, Mimes, Time Mages, Black Mages, Blue Mages, Red Mages, and Necromancers, has merely 37 Attack, but increases the power of attacks of every element by the wielder except Water and Holy elemental.

The Holy Lance is Holy-elemental and boasts 107 Attack and 3 Strength. However, it can only be used by Freelancers, Gladiators, and Dragoons.

Gaia's Bell, only used by Freelancers and Geomancers, has just 32 Attack, but boosts Earth-elemental attacks by the user and has a 25% chance of casting Quake instead of attacking.

Lastly, the Fire Lash is the ultimate Beastmaster weapon and can be also used by Freelancers. It boosts Attack by 79, and Strength and Speed by 2. It also ignores row and has a 32% chance of casting Firaga when attacking.

Final Fantasy VI

All characters except for Gau and Umaro have ultimate weapons found in the Dragons' Den, obtained after defeating a certain boss within, or by betting another ultimate weapon in the Dragon's Neck Coliseum.

  • Terra's Apocalypse has an attack power of 250, gives +7 boosts for Strength and Magic and +20% boosts for Evasion and Magic Evasion, and consumes MP when attacking for a critical hit. It is won by defeating Red Dragon or by betting the Save the Queen in the Coliseum.

It is obtained by defeating Gold Dragon or by betting the Oborozuki in the Coliseum.
  • Edgar's Longinus has an attack power of 235 and gives a +7 boost for Strength and +3 boosts for Speed and Stamina, however no damage bonus is granted for Jump. It is won by defeating Storm Dragon or by betting the Gungnir in the Coliseum.

Final Fantasy VII

In Final Fantasy VII, ultimate weapons are distinguishable for having unique damage algorithms, as well as eight linked Materia slots with zero Materia growth. Because of the weapons' unique damage algorithms, the damage they deal can be lower than that of other weapons under certain circumstances, making them not always the ideal weapon to equip.

Cloud's ultimate weapon is the Ultima Weapon, dropped by the Ultimate Weapon boss. It deals more damage the fuller Cloud's HP bar is.

Power = [(3 * Power * Cloud's HP) / Cloud's Max HP] + 1

Barret's ultimate weapon, the Missing Score, is found inside the Sister Ray just before battling Helletic Hojo, but Barret must be in the party in order to receive it. It deals more damage the more AP the Materia loaded onto it contain. Because of its unique damage algorithm, Missing Score is subject to the Overflow Glitch that can let Barret kill any opponent in one hit.

Power = [Power * [Total AP on Weapon / 10000] / 16] + 1

Master Magic, Master Command, Master Summon, Enemy Skill, and Underwater Materia do not add to this formula.

Tifa's ultimate weapon is the Premium Heart obtained by examining a machine in the abandoned building that has a sign "ITEM" outside in Wall Market. It can be obtained by disc 2 and onwards, after the player has found the Key to Midgar buried in Bone Village.

Power = [Power * [Tifa's Limit Level * Limit Bar Units / 16] / 16] + 1

Due to this unique damage algorithm Premium Heart is often not considered Tifa's best weapon. The Godhand, Tifa's "second best" weapon has 255% accuracy, which makes it ideal to use with Deathblow for an automatic critical hit. Tifa's Powersoul deals double damage if Tifa's in Near-Death status, and if Tifa has Death-sentence Status it quadruples the damage. Both multipliers can stack together. Powersoul can be found in Mt. Nibel in the area Materia Keeper is fought. Another of Tifa's weapons, the Master Fist, deals more damage the more negative status effects Tifa is afflicted with, and can be found in Shinra Headquarters shop on disc 2.

Aeris's ultimate weapon, Princess Guard, can be found in room four of the clock room in the Temple of the Ancients on disc 1. It is the only ultimate weapon that has Materia growth and has fewer than eight linked Materia slots. It deals more damage if her allies are KO'ed.

Damage = Damage * (1 + Number of Allies in Death Status)

The Limited Moon, Red XIII's ultimate weapon, is found by talking to Bugenhagen at Cosmo Canyon in disc 3 with Red XIII in the party. It deals more damage the fuller Red XIII's MP bar is.

Power = [(3 * Power * Red XIII's MP) / Red XIII's Max MP] + 1

Yuffie's ultimate weapon, the Conformer, can be found in the Sunken Gelnika, accessible after the player acquires a submarine. It does more damage the higher level the opponents are, and ignores the Morph damage penalty.

Power = Power * (Average Level of all Enemies Targetted by Attack / 16)

Cait Sith's ultimate weapon, the HP Shout, can be found on the 64th floor of the Shinra Headquarters. The megaphone can only be obtained after Cait Sith becomes a playable character, so it cannot be obtained until the party visits the headquarters a second time on disc 2. It deals more damage the fuller Cait Sith's HP bar is.

Power = [(3 * Power * Cait Sith's HP) / Cait Sith's Max HP] + 1

The Death Penalty, Vincent's ultimate weapon, is found in the Waterfall Cave. The player must trigger a storyline event there by visiting the cave with Vincent in the party, and then fight ten random encounters and return to the cave in order to obtain the weapon. It deals more damage the more opponents Vincent has killed. Because of this, it is subject to the Overflow Glitch that can let Vincent kill any opponent in a single strike.

Power = [Power * [Vincent's Kills / 128] / 16] + 10

Cid's ultimate weapon, the Venus Gospel, can be obtained by talking to the man who was staring at the rocket after the rocket has been launched. If the player speaks to the man three times, he will give the player Cid's ultimate weapon. It deals more damage the fuller Cid's MP bar is.

Power = [(3 * Power * Cid's MP) / Cid's Max MP] + 1

Final Fantasy VIII

As it is not a requisite to read the corresponding Weapons Monthly magazines before the weapons can be modelled in a junk shop, the characters' ultimate weapons can be crafted as early as the player collects the required items (often the easiest done by modifying Triple Triad cards). This means everyone but Irvine can potentially obtain their strongest weapon on disc 1. However, the weapons' attack stats are not significant in Final Fantasy VIII due to the Junction System, making only Squall's Lion Heart and Selphie's Strange Vision notable among them; Lion Heart for providing Squall his ultimate Limit Break technique, and Strange Vision having natural 255% accuracy.

Squall's Lion Heart requires one Adamantine, four Dragon Fangs and twelve Pulse Ammo to make. It costs 2,000 gil.

Rinoa's Shooting Star requires two Windmills, one Regen Ring, one Force Armlet and two Energy Crystals. It costs 1,000 gil.

Zell's Ehrgeiz requires one Adamantine, four Dragon Skins and one Fury Fragment. It costs 800 gil.

Quistis's Save the Queen requires two Malboro Tentacles, four Sharp Spikes and four Energy Crystals. It costs 800 gil.

Selphie's Strange Vision requires one Adamantine, three Star Fragments and two Curse Spikes. It costs 800 gil.

Irvine's Exeter requires two Dino Bones, one Moon Stone, two Star Fragments and eighteen Screws. It costs 800 gil.

Final Fantasy IX

Zidane's ultimate weapon is the Ultima Weapon found in an unmarked chocobo bubble on the site where the Shimmering Island used to be. On disc 4 the island will be gone but will still be marked on the map. If the player dives with Choco (by using a Dead Pepper exactly on the right spot), they can find the Ultima Weapon. It teaches Flee and inflicts the Sleep status when used with Soul Blade.

Tiger Racket is both Garnet and Eiko's ultimate weapon. It is obtained from the bubble below Quan's Dwelling. The player must enter Quan's Dwelling and look down from the ledge after they have trained Choco to dark blue color. It teaches Dispel and is Wind-elemental.

Steiner's ultimate weapon is the Excalibur II found in Memoria if the player inspects the pillar in the Gate to Space room with less than 12 hours on the game clock. It is Holy-elemental and teaches Minus Strike, Climhazzard and Stock Break. Because of the arduous challenge to obtain this weapon, Steiner's second best weapon, the Ragnarok, is often considered his other ultimate weapon; found in the the Chocograph 21, Outer Island. Ragnarok inflicts the Slow status when used with the Add Status ability, and teaches Shock and Thunder Slash.

Vivi's ultimate weapon is the Mace of Zeus found in Memoria's Stairs room. It inflicts the Mini status when used with Add Status, and teaches Doomsday, Vivi's most powerful black magic spell.

Freya's ultimate weapon is the Dragon's Hair found at the mountain crack (by feeding Choco a Dead Pepper at the correct spot) north-west of Oeilvert. It teaches the Dragon's Breath ability.

Quina's ultimate weapon is the Gastro Fork. It is obtained after catching 99 frogs in the marshes and defeating Quale. It inflicts the Stop status with Add Status ability and teaches High Tide.

Amarant's ultimate weapon is the Rune Claws found in the Time Interval room in Memoria. It inflicts the Blind status with Add Status ability and teaches Spare Change, Demi Shock and Revive.

Final Fantasy X

The ultimate weapons in Final Fantasy X are called "Celestial Weapons", and each of the seven permanent party members has a corresponding Celestial Weapon. Unlike other games, the weapons are actually detrimental when first obtained, as they carry the No AP ability. In order to overcome this, each weapon must be enhanced using two corresponding key items, each named for a celestial body corresponding to the character – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Generally speaking, the Celestial Weapons are obtained by performing a simple task (although the Celestial Mirror key item must be obtained first), while the Crests are found in treasure chests and the Sigils are won by excelling in minigames and sidequests. When fully enhanced, the Celestial Weapons have four abilities attached, which are generally complementary to the wielder's personality and/or default combat style. Furthermore, with the exception of Tidus and Rikku's weapons, each Celestial Weapon allows a certain Aeon to break the damage limit. All Celestial Weapons also ignore the defense of enemies when attacking physically. The Caladbolg, World Champion, Spirit Lance, and Godhand do damage based on how close their wielders' are to full HP. The Masamune does damage based on how low its wielder's HP is. Onion Knight and Nirvana do damage based on how close their wielders' are to full MP.

It is worth noting that, while the game's Customization feature makes it possible for players to manually create weapons with the same abilities as the Celestial Weapons, any such weapons will not take on the Celestial Weapons' names. They will not ignore defense, won't have any effect on Aeons, nor have the damage vary in different circumstances.

Final Fantasy XI

While there is no typical variety of ultimate weapon in Final Fantasy XI, there are three sets of unique weapons that are highly prized and extremely difficult to obtain: the Relic Weapons, the Mythic Weapons, and the Empyrean Weapons. All three varieties of weapon require a large amount of time, gil, or teamwork, often some combination of the three, to obtain, and all three types of weapons provide the wielder with extraordinary power and a unique Weapon Skill.

Relic Weapons can only be obtained by traveling into the realm of Dynamis in order to collect the basic variety of relic weapon. From there, the player must upgrade the weapon by giving a goblin certain items and ancient currency obtained within Dynamis. Due to the exceptionally high amount of currency required in order to upgrade relic weapons, people often need to purchase ancient currency from other players in order to acquire relic weapons within a reasonable timeframe. Relic weapons are divided by weapo, and jobs released from the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion pack and beyond are incapable of wielding them.

Mythic Weapons, arguably harder to obtain than any other type of weapon, are randomly dropped in their base version by bosses in the Nyzul Isle investigation missions. In order to the upgrade the weapon, the player must first obtain the Captain rank in Salaheem's Sentinels. Then, the player may begin a long series of quests in order to upgrade the weapon to its final version. Few mythic weapons have been fully upgraded, partly because the weapon is the most difficult to obtain, and partly because there is a quest available to teach the players the weapon skill attached to the mythic weapon. Mythic weapons are divided by the job the weapon is designed for, and each weapon contains a different weapon skill.

Empyrean Weapons, the most recently released of the three varieties of weapon, are weapons designed to be upgraded through a variety of trials involving slaying creatures or Notorious Monsters a number of times, sometimes under certain conditions. As the weapon becomes stronger, the trials require to upgrade the weapon increase in difficulty, often requiring groups to complete. Although the Empyrean weapons are the cheapest variety of weapon to obtain, they also require a lot of work for the player.

Final Fantasy XII

Each weapon type in Final Fantasy XII can be considered to have an "ultimate" version.

The Zodiac Spear is the strongest weapon and a spear in Final Fantasy XII with 150 Attack Points. It is found in the Necrohol of Nabudis when the player doesn't open any of the forbidden chests. Zodiac Spear can also be found in a random treasure in the Henne Mines, but it has very little chance to spawn (0.01%).

Another notable weapon is the Tournesol, the ultimate greatsword. It can only be obtained by collecting bunch of rare items at the bazaar, and costs 600,000 to buy. Tournesol isn't quite as strong as the Zodiac Spear, with attack power of 140, however, it has a better chance of doing hit combos. Tournesol can be obtained by selling three Gemsteels, three Empyreal Souls and three Serpentariuses.

Durandal is the ultimate one-handed sword with 99 attack points. It is obtained from the bazaar by selling three Lifewicks, seven Emperor Scales, and one Leshach Halcyon. It costs 21,600 gil.

Danjuro is the ultimate dagger with 80 attack points, and is notorious for how difficult it is to obtain. It can only be rarely dropped by the Larva Eater.

Scorpion Tail is the ultimate weapon in the axes and hammers category with 119 attack points. It is obtained from the bazaar for 60,000 gil after selling three Charged Gizzards, three Wyrm Bones and four Scorpio Gems.

Grand Mace is the ultimate mace with 72 attack points and reward for the Pylraster hunt.

Euclid's Sextant is the ultimate measure with 35 attack points that gives its wearer the automatic Bubble status. It is a reward for Wild Malboro hunt and can also be found in a chest on the Cerobi Steppe (Diamond Armlet is needed).

Masamune is the ultimate katana in the game, and has the highest chance to deal hit combos of any weapon, especially when coupled with the Genji Glove accessory. This makes it useful for enemies that have damage caps, such as the later stages of Yiazmat, where combo abilities are more useful than attack power. Masamune is reward for the Gilgamesh hunt, or by selling two Gemsteels, three Orichalcums and two Mallets and bought from the bazaar for 350,000 gil.

Yagyu Darkblade is the strongest ninja sword, dropped by the rare game enemy Bombshell.

Whale Whisker is the ultimate pole. It can be bought from the bazaar for 60,000 gil after selling three Mythrils, three Corpse Flies and four Aquarius Gems.

Rod of Faith is the ultimate rod. It is obtainable on Mt. Bur-Omisace after Behemoth King hunt. It can't be blocked or parried by enemies.

Staff of the Magi is the ultimate staff stolen from Luxollid. It boosts Holy damage by 50%.

Sagittarius is the ultimate bow obtained from the bazaar for 60,000 gil by selling three Beastlord Horns, three Moon Rings and four and Sagittarius Gems. The Artemis Arrows are the ultimate arrows, obtained for 15,000 gil from the bazaar after selling two Vampyr Fangs, two Dorsal Fins and three Gemini Gems.

Gastrophetes is the ultimate crossbow stolen from Pallicant, or bought from the Outfitters Shop in Phon Coast (part of Rare Game Hint Club sidequest, must give 25 trophies to Atak). The Grand Bolts are the ultimate bolts obtained for 15,000 gil from the bazaar after selling two Wrath of Gods, two Ring Wyrm Livers and three Capricorn Gems.

Fomalhaut is the ultimate gun found from a random treasure in the Lhusu Mines in the room Antlion is found. It can also be found from Henne Mines Phase 2, Pharos at Ridorana and Cerobi Steppe. The Stone Shot is the ultimate ammo obtained for 15,000 gil from the bazaar after selling two Mirror Scales, two Tyrant Bones and three Libra Gems. Can also be randomly found on Cerobi Steppe with Diamond Armlet.

Volcano is the ultimate hand-bomb and reward for the Catoblepas hunt. The Castellanos is the ultimate bomb obtained for 12,000 gil from the bazaar after selling three Bomb Fragments, two Frog Oils and three Aries Gems.

Final Fantasy XII International: Zodiac Job System

The Zodiac Job System version introduces some new weapons, some of which surpass the old ultimate weapons.

Trango Tower is the new ultimate one-handed sword that is even stronger than the Zodiac Spear and has a very high combo rate. It is a rare steal from Zodiark or a random treasure in Subterra B3F South-east room. Notably, the weapon is invisible.

Masamune I is the new stronger version of Masamune. It is obtained by selling the same items to the bazaar as was needed in the original Final Fantasy XII.

Gastrophetes S is the new strongest crossbow. It is obtained in Pharos at Ridorana - Second Ascent.

Zaitengrate is the new strongest bow with 224 attack power and absurdly high range and 75 evasion. It is by far the strongest weapon in the game, but is only obtained from a chest in an airship with very low spawn rate (0.01%).

Aldebaran Y is the new strongest gun obtained from the bazaar by selling two Emperor Scales, three Earth Crystals and three Silver Liquids.

Shikari no Nagase F is the new strongest dagger that drops from Larva Eater.

Scorpion Tail F is the new strongest axe that has a katana-like combo rate. It can be obtained from the bazaar after selling the same items as needed in Final Fantasy XII for the regular Scorpion Tail.

Whale Whisker N is the new strongest pole obtained from the bazaar by selling the same items to the bazaar as was needed for the regular Whale Whisker in the original Final Fantasy XII.

Volcano T is the new strongest hand-bomb, found in Henne Mines Phase 2.

Orochi N is the new strongest ninja sword, obtained from the bazaar by selling two Coeurl Whiskers, two Sickle-Blades and three Cancer Gems.

Byblos Bone is the new ultimate mace found in Lhusu Mines - Site 5, and stolen from Yiazmat.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

Anastasia can be considered Vaan's ultimate weapon, obtained as part of the storyline after the events in the World of Illusion. It is not initially the strongest available weapon, but its stats are boosted every time the player completes the Midlight's Deep dungeon. Eventually, the it is possible to boost Anastasia's stats so high Vaan can take out Yiazmat alone.

Other best weapons for characters are crafted with the help of recipe books, but the weapons' stats depend on the items the player uses and the questions they answer when making the weapon.

Final Fantasy XIII

In Final Fantasy XIII, the upgrading system for weapons allows for a wide variety of different weapon builds to suit a character's needs. However, every weapon can be upgraded to a third tier, the ultimate tier, which allows for the greatest power potential of any single weapon upgrade chain and has "ATB: +1" as its passive ability, but it comes at the cost of decreased target times in battles and the inability to create synthesized abilities with the weapon. No matter which type of weapon it is, every tier three weapon for each character has the same name.

For each character, they are:

  • Lightning: Omega Weapon.
  • Sazh: Total Eclipses.
  • Snow: Save the Queen.
  • Hope: Nue.
