The higher the user's HP, the sharper the weapon's blade.

Dissidia Final Fantasy description
The Final Fantasy VII version of the Ultima Weapon as seen in Dissidia Final Fantasy.

The Ultima Weapon (アルテマウェポン, Arutema Wepon?), also known as Atma Weapon or Caladbolg, is a weapon in many games in the Final Fantasy series. Like the spell, the Ultima Weapon is one of the strongest in its game and often serves as the ultimate weapon of the main protagonist. It generally takes the form of a two-tone blue sword with gold hilt, but has also appeared as a dual blade, gun, or gunblade. Since its debut in Final Fantasy VI, the Ultima Weapon has appeared in almost every game in the main series, including re-releases of earlier games.

The Ultima Weapon frequently draws its power from the wielder—the weapon grows in strength as the user gains HP, making it powerful in the hands of higher-level characters. Acquiring the Ultima Weapon usually requires the player to defeat an optional boss or acquire rare items.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy[]

A sword bound to its wielder's HP.

Description

The Ultima Weapon appears in the Dawn of Souls and many subsequent versions, bar the Pixel Remaster. Besides the Masamune, it is the only weapon that can be equipped by all upgraded classes. Its damage is based on the user's HP, having a maximum Attack power of 100 (rounded up from 99.9). The Attack and Accuracy increases are equal to the wielder's max HP divided by 10.

It is obtained in a treasure chest after defeating Death Gaze in Whisperwind Cove.

Final Fantasy III[]

The Ultima Weapon can be obtained in the 3D remake as a reward from the Mognet sidequests "Fix Sara's Pendant" and "Find Orichalcum". The party obtains the Orichalcum after defeating Aeon in Cid's basement and give it to the Legendary Smith in Falgabard.

The Ultima Weapon can be equipped by the Freelancer, Warrior, Knight, Dark Knight, Red Mage, and Onion Knight classes. When equipped, it boosts all stats by 15, rivaling the stat boost of the Celestial Gloves, and has an Attack bonus of 155, making it the second-most powerful weapon in the game after the Onion Sword.

In the Windows Phone and Steam versions, an achievement can be gained for obtaining the Ultima Weapon, named "One Sword to Slay Them All".

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]

The Ultima Weapon is drops from the boss of the same name. Unlike other incarnations of the weapon, it takes the form of a modest, dark blue iron sword. It has an Attack power of 180, and gives +10 to Strength, Speed, and Stamina. Cecil, Golbez, Ceodore, and Kain can equip it.

In the 3D remakes, the Ultima Weapon now drops from Lunar Bahamut, due to the removal of the Ultima Weapon boss. It is the strongest sword, carrying the same parameters from the original versions. The Ultima Weapon's design in the remake is now based off the weapon's design from Final Fantasy VI.

Final Fantasy V[]

Sword with the power of destruction. Can be used two-handed. Can be used with Spellblade.

Description

In the Game Boy Advance and now-discontinued 2013 Matrix Software versions, the Ultima Weapon is found in the monster-in-a-box containing Neo Shinryu. It is the strongest weapon with an Attack power of 177, a Hit Rate of 180, and it increases Strength, Speed, and Stamina by 2. It can be equipped by any class that can equip swords, such as Knight, Mystic Knight, Cannoneer, and Blue Mage.

In the discontinued 2013 versions of the game, the weapon's sprite reuses the Ultima Weapon's sprite from the remastered version of Final Fantasy Dimensions.

Final Fantasy VI[]

The weakest form.
The second weakest form.
The strongest form.

The original appearance of the weapon, the Ultima Weapon (originally translated as Atma Weapon in the SNES and PlayStation releases) is found in the Cave to the Sealed Gate. Another Ultima Weapon can be stolen from Rest during the final battle (in the Advance and 2014 versions, it can be stolen multiple times by fighting it more than once). Ultima Weapon is incompatible with Bushido, Runic, the Gauntlet, and it cannot be thrown. In most versions, the weapon is ignored by the Optimize option in the equipment menu. Terra, Locke, Edgar, and Celes can equip it.

Although it has an attack power of 255, its damage is calculated differently from most weapons': the damage is based on the level of the character equipped with it and their current HP level compared to their max HP. When HP is high, the Ultima Weapon deals a large amount of damage. When HP is low, it deals a small amount of damage. The sprite used for the Ultima Weapon in battle is a glowing blue sword of varying length. The higher the damage dealt is, the longer the sword is. At its max power, the blade is longer than the user, and leaves an afterimage effect when swung. The weapon ignores the target's defense when calculating damage.

The Ultima Weapon is given a backstory: it was created during the War of the Magi as a magical weapon said to reflect the power of who wields it. It is said to have been created around the same time as the magical beast that shares its name.

Final Fantasy VII[]

The Ultima Weapon is Cloud's ultimate weapon, received after defeating the Ultimate Weapon. It is the strongest weapon with an Attack power of 100, a Hit Rate of 110, and it grants +24 Spirit and +51 Magic. It has eight Materia slots in four linked pairs, but has zero Materia growth.

The damage the Ultima Weapon deals depends on Cloud's current HP in relation to his maximum HP; the higher it is, the greater the damage dealt. The sword's graphic changes depending on Cloud's HP, from a dark blue and purple when weak, to a bright blue and white when he is at full health.

Damage formula:

Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-[]

The Ultima Weapon is a handgun, visually indistinguishable from Cerberus, Vincent Valentine's weapon of choice. It is a modified version of the Model Gun, a gag weapon found in Edge, however, it requires 200,000 gil to modify into the ultimate form.

This particular weapon fires standard handgun bullets, but deals more damage the more hits the player lands, similar to the way the machine gun does increased damage. It is considered Vincent's best gun.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

The optional boss Ultima Weapon carries a sword similar to Cloud Strife's Ultima Weapon in Final Fantasy VII. Squall's strongest weapon, the Lion Heart, also possesses similar traits to the traditional Ultima Weapon blade, having a bright blue blade.

Final Fantasy IX[]

The Ultima Weapon is a thief sword and Zidane's ultimate weapon, acquired during the Chocobo Hot and Cold sidequest, by using a Dead Pepper on the ruins of the Shimmering Island (endgame). It is the second strongest weapon after the Excalibur II. The Ultima Weapon has an Attack power of 100 and has the Sleep status to inflict on enemies with Soul Blade. It teaches the Flee command.

Final Fantasy X[]

Ultima Weapon is the original Japanese name for Tidus's Celestial Weapon, also used for the Italian, French, Spanish, and German versions; however, it was renamed to "Caladbolg" in the the English localization. It deals more damage the more HP Tidus has in comparison to his maximum HP. After upgrading it with the Sun Crest and Sun Sigil items, it contains the abilities Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Evade & Counter, and Magic Counter. Like the other Celestial Weapons, the Caladbolg will ignore the target's Defense when calculating damage.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Yuna wields Tidus's Caladbolg when donning the Dark Knight dressphere. Weapons are merely cosmetic in Final Fantasy X-2.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Sword capable of returning all to naught.

Description

The Ultima Weapon is Vaan's weapon obtained by defeating Zodiark in the Well of Whispered Oaths. Though it is his best weapon under normal circumstances, other weapons can exceed its power if they are forged with the highest quality materials, and Anastasia can be repeatedly charged by defeating Yiazmat at the end of Midlight's Deep, eventually surpassing the Ultima Weapon. It has Attack power of 100, Magick Attack of 50, and Speed of 60 and boosts all stats by +15. It uses a generic sword sprite during battle.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Used to strike down weakened foes, this gunblade allows instant staggering of enemies near the stagger threshold.

Description

The Ultima Weapon is a model of gunblade used by Lightning. It is obtained by transmuting Lionheart using a Scarletite.

The weapon is not among the ones with the highest of stats, but it has the passive ability Quick Stagger, which allows Lightning to stagger an enemy when the Stagger Gauge is at least 90% full. It belongs to the Gestalt synthesis group. Unlike other Final Fantasy titles, the Ultima Weapon is not the ultimate form of the weapon, as it can still be upgraded into the more powerful Omega Weapon.

Lionheart is bought from Plautus's Workshop for 28,000 gil or found in Eden in chapter 12. At max level it dismantles into Ceramic Armor (x7) and a Uraninite.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII[]

The Ultima Weapon is obtained by Lightning if she completes all four trials in the final dungeon before facing the final boss, which also give her four powerful elemental spells. It is a restored and upgraded version of her initial weapon, Crimson Blitz, which was damaged by Lumina in the opening. It provides +2500 to strength and magic, +15 ATB speed, and has the Arsenal of One auto-ability, which boosts damage for Army of One. The Night Lotus shield is also upgraded to the Ultima Shield in the same event. Obtaining the ultimate equipment earns the Crimson Rebirth achievement.

While most equipment carries over into New Game Plus, the Ultima Weapon and Shield revert to their basic forms on starting another playthrough.

Lightning can learn the Ultima Weapon's backstory from Kaj in Aryas Village after selling enough soul seeds to the seedhunters.

Long ago, there was a blacksmith who had a dream. He wanted to make a blade using soul seeds. Want me to tell ya how that turned out? He managed to create something amazing all right, but it had a life of its own. The first thing it did was slay its creator. Then it disappeared to God-knows-where. This magical blade was dubbed the Ultima Weapon. They say its blade glows with crimson, stained by the blood of all the men it's slain..

Final Fantasy XVI[]

His word was the first, so shall it be the last.

Description

The Ultima Weapon has attack power of 700 and is craftable in Final Fantasy mode.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles[]

The Ultima Sword, Ultima Lance, Ultima Hammer, and Ultima Maul are each the second-strongest weapon for their respective characters, all created by finding the Greatest Weapon scroll, and then obtaining Ultimite and Orichalcum so they can be forged. All the "Ultima" weapons have an Attack power of 35.

Though each character has a weapon stronger than their "Ultima" weapon, its true strength lies in its ability to make enemies flinch with every strike. Ordinarily, one would have to pull off a three-hit attack combo to make the foe flinch, or use a charge attack. With the Ultima Weapons though, the player could use simple combo strikes and the enemy would flinch with every hit, leaving the player free from being struck back. The Ultima Sword, Hammer, and Maul posses the same Focus Attack skill as the weapons born from the novice weapon scroll, but the Ultima Lance has the same Focus attack as the Dragon Lance.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time[]

A sword carried by one who saved the world. For Clavats only.

Ultima Weapon's description

The Ultima Weapon is a Clavat exclusive weapon, and the strongest sword. It has an Attack power of 127 at level 1 and 157 attack at level 30, and has one empty slot. It can be obtained as a drop from Neo Larkeicus on Hard and Very Hard mode, and then created for 1,800 gil by using Abyssian x3, Adamantite x3, and Wandering Soul x2. When turned into a jewel, a level 3-9 Ultima Weapon makes a Spirit Moonstone, level 10-19 makes an Extreme Mania, and level 20-30 makes a Gigas Eye.

Final Fantasy Dimensions[]

The Ultima Weapon is obtained by defeating Ω Weapon in the Gladiators' Hall, and selecting the Ultima Weapon from the various weapons and items in the room that Ω Weapon guards. The Ultima Weapon can be equipped by the Jobless, Warrior, Red Mage, Dragoon, Dark Knight, Paladin, and Memorist jobs. It has and ATK stat of 117, and allows the wielder to break the damage limit.

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2008)[]

The Ultima Weapon is a level 99 weapon that can be equipped by all characters. It increases Attack by 68, and when the character's HP is at its max, it increases all stats by 2. It can be traded for with 31,920 gil, the Pisces Recipe, Noah's Lute, and Whisperweed.

Cloud and Tidus equip their respective Ultima Weapons in their EX Modes, but in keeping with Final Fantasy X's translation, Tidus's weapon is called the Caladbolg. As an effect of the weapons, in their EX Modes Cloud and Tidus deal more Brave damage the higher their HP is. Cloud also gains the ability to pierce blocks with his melee attacks, while Tidus gains an increase in duration of invincibility during his dodges.

While Tidus's Caladbolg retains its original appearance, Cloud's Ultima Weapon is redesigned to emphasize both the industrial nature of its originated setting and biomechanical motifs that match its keeper, the Ultimate Weapon. The handle and hilt maintain its conical shape with a gold body and royal purple handle cloth, while five pipes protrude from the guard that branch out from a blue diamond-shaped gem and connect in a black batwing-shaped frame webbing; the handle fits into the vertical pipe while the rest are capped with red bronze cylinder pylons, presumably to slot in materia. The blade stands out and has a pronounced inward curved taper, the tip in a pronounced heptagonal point, and is of a milky opaque crystal, with a narrow streak of blue down its center.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy[]

The Ultima Weapon and Caladbolg are the EX Mode weapons used by Cloud and Tidus. It is also available as an equippable level 100 weapon with the same effects and trade accessories needed to acquire it, though the trade price has gone up to 182,800 gil.

Non-Final Fantasy guest appearances[]

Other Square Enix titles[]

Ultima Weapon KH

The Ultima Weapon in Kingdom Hearts.

The Ultima Weapon has appeared in other Square Enix titles as an obtainable weapon. Like the Final Fantasy weapon, the Ultima Weapon often serves as the strongest sword for a game's protagonist.

The Ultima Weapon in Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring

The Ultima Weapon made its first cameo appearance in Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring as a 2-handed sword for Masuda Koji. It is considered the strongest melee weapon and can only be used in the Forsaken Dungeon portions of the game.

The Ultima Weapon is a recurring weapon in the Kingdom Hearts series, often being the strongest Keyblade usable by the protagonists. It changes its appearance in most titles, switching between gold, white, and blue colored Keyblades, but all carry a spiral motif in each appearance. The Ultima Weapon is usable in all games in the series except for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross].

In addition, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days has an ability called "Ultima Weapon", which grants the player an additional 15 strength to any weapon they wield.

The Ultima Weapon appears as a greatsword for Ibuki in the Japanese-exclusive Nintendo DS game, Blood of Bahamut

Non-Square Enix titles[]

Influences in other titles[]

Ultima Sword from Granblue Fantasy

Ultima Sword, one of the Ultima Weapons from Granblue Fantasy.

The Ultima Weapon's original Atma name in Final Fantasy VI, is referenced in League of Legends in an item called Atma's Impaler. Similar to its appearance in Final Fantasy VI (and most of its other appearances), it gains damage based on the wielding champion's maximum HP, while also providing bonuses to armor and critical strike chance.

The English version of Cygames, Inc's Granblue Fantasy features the "Ultima Weapons" as a series of powerful weapons associated with its version of Bahamut. The game references both English names used in the Final Fantasy series, with the "Atma" versions being the incomplete base form, while the "Ultima" weapons are the true enhanced forms. In the Japanese language, the weapons were originally known as the "Omega Weapon" (オメガウェポン, Omega Wepon?) series. Granblue Fantasy borrows a majority of its job influences from Final Fantasy, featuring several alumni from the series among its development staff.

Etymology[]

Ultima means "the last" in Latin and many Latin-based languages. The word is an inflection of ultimus which is the superlative of ulter, which means "that is beyond". In the Spanish versions of many Final Fantasy games, the spell Ultima's name is written as "Artema", a close transliteration of the Japanese katakana.

Atma or Atman, in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions is a word that means self. It is the word that Buddhist monks use to refer to themselves as the first-person singular.
