Ultima Weapon's Final Fantasy VI incarnation as it appears in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

My name is Ultima... I am power both ancient and unrivaled... I do not bleed, for I am but strength given form... Feeble creatures of flesh... Your time is nigh!

Ultima Weapon prepares to face the party in Final Fantasy VI.

Ultima Weapon (アルテマウェポン, Arutema Wepon?, lit. Artima Weapon), also known as Atma Weapon or Ultimate Weapon, is a recurring superboss in the Final Fantasy series. It is a six-limbed bio-mechanical monster that first appeared in Final Fantasy VI as an ancient war machine created during the War of the Magi. The Ultima Weapon is the namesake for the "Weapon"-type enemies that appear in numerous Final Fantasy titles.

Beginning with Final Fantasy VIII, Ultima Weapon has been depicted as a weaker version of Omega Weapon, an even more powerful superboss that usually demands Ultima Weapon be defeated to challenge it. In later titles, Ultima Weapon has returned to being a standalone boss, often appearing alongside Omega and Shinryu in a trio of optional bosses. Ultima Weapon is also the namesake of the powerful sword, Ultima Weapon, which is sometimes obtained by defeating the monster.

Ultima Weapon first appears in the Dawn of Souls version and returns in subsequent remakes. It is encountered in the Soul of Rebirth optional quest, in a chamber accessed from Machanon. It has 15,000 HP and resists all elemental attacks. Defeating the Ultima Weapon allows the party to claim a copy of the Ultima Tome to teach to Minwu.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Template:Sideicon

Ultima Weapon is a boss representing Final Fantasy VI. It is an optional encounter in the Depths of the True Moon, and is one of the game's superbosses, boasting 230,000 HP, the highest of any enemy including the final boss. Ultima Weapon has many powerful attacks, including Crush, Bio, and Flare. In a behavior taken from Final Fantasy VI, it can buff itself and charge energy to cast Meteor. Upon being defeated, it drops the most powerful sword, the Ultima Weapon.

In the 3D remake releases Ultima Weapon is cut with the rest of the Final Fantasy VI bosses. The Ultima Weapon sword is instead obtained from Lunar Bahamut.

In the original SNES translation, Ultima Weapon is mistranslated as Atma Weapon. It guards the passage to the Warring Triad on the Floating Continent, and is the strongest boss in the game at that point. It is one of the handful of enemies to use the battle theme "Battle to the Death," and the first boss the player encounters to use it. It uses a variety of powerful offensive magic, including Mind Blast, which prior to the GBA release was exclusive to it.

In Kefka's Tower, the party faces the upgraded Ultima Buster. In the GBA and mobile/Steam releases, the third incarnation, Omega Weapon, can be fought at the end of the new bonus dungeon, the Dragon's Den, after the player traverses the dungeon once and defeats Kaiser Dragon.

Final Fantasy VII

Weapon ultima ff7

Ultimate Weapon is one of the five Weapons awakened by Sephiroth. It is fought at Mideel in a mandatory encounter, but cannot be killed, and after a few rounds it flees. Once the party acquires the airship Highwind, Ultimate Weapon roams the skies and can be fought by ramming the airship into it until it stops and engages the party. Ultimate Weapon flees after a few turns, but its HP does not recover when it retreats, and the player can eventually whittle it down and destroy it over Cosmo Canyon.

When defeated, the Ultimate Weapon relinquishes Cloud's strongest sword, the Ultima Weapon. Ultimate Weapon itself crashes into the ground leaving a crater, which allows passage to the Ancient Forest on foot.

Final Fantasy VIII

Template:Sideicon

FF8 Ultima Weapon

Ultima Weapon is fought at the bottom of the Deep Sea Research Center in an excavation pit. Accessing the final chamber in the research center either requires the player to reach the last door of the previous segment with 10 pressure units left, or have Zell Dincht in the party. The strongest Guardian Force, Eden, can be drawn from it, as well as the spell Ultima, making Ultima Weapon one of only two enemies in the game that can have Ultima drawn from them, the other being Omega Weapon. Ultima Weapon casts Gravija, Meteor and Quake, and with Omega Weapon has exclusive access to the attack Light Pillar, dealing an unblockable 9,999 damage to a party member.

The Ultima Weapon wields a modified model of Cloud Strife's Ultima Weapon from Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy X

The origins of Ultima Weapon are tied to the existence of Omega Weapon for the first time. When the former Yevon monk Omega was executed, his hatred for Yevon was so strong it spawned the fiend Omega Weapon in the Omega Ruins, and a lesser form of Omega Weapon, Ultima Weapon.

Ultima Weapon uses a variety of status attacks, and the attacks Shimmering Rain and Energy Core to deal magical damage. Defeating it allows the party to access the second area of the Omega Ruins where Omega Weapon is found. Ultima Weapon is one of only two bosses in the game that can be bribed, the other being Lord Ochu.

Whatever you do, don't call him Atma.

Bestiary description.

Ultima Weapon returns as a regular enemy. In a reversal of the original game, Omega Weapon is weaker than Ultima Weapon. The party can find Ultima Weapon in Via Infinito or the Ruin Depths, and can learn the Blue Bullet ability Supernova from it.

Ultima Weapon's entry in Shinra's Bestiary refers to its Final Fantasy VI origins, which states not to call him "Atma."

Ultima (FFXI)

Ultima Weapon appears in the Chains of Promathia Mission 6-4 and has 15,000 HP and high damage resistance. This incarnation is smaller than other Ultima Weapons, able to fit on the deck of an airship.

A prototype, known as Proto-Ultima, awaits those at the end of Temenos and is much more powerful. A stronger version of this boss known as Arch-Ultima can also be fought in the level 99 content version of Temenos.

Final Fantasy XIV

Template:Sideicon

Ultima Weapon.

Ultima Weapon is an ancient anti-primal war machine of the Allag civilization. The Empire of Garlemald finds it and entrusts it to Gaius Van Baelsar, who restores it to working order and uses it to absorb the primals Titan, Ifrit, and Garuda, to absorb their abilities. Gaius intended to use the Ultima Weapon to subjugate the beast tribes of Eorzea. The Ultima Weapon serves as the final boss of the main campaign, and can cast the magic Ultima in the second phase of the battle. If Ultima is cast, it results in an instant Game Over.

Patch 2.1 added a Hard Mode version of Ultima Weapon with higher stats and stronger equipment drops. The player can fight the Ultima Weapon again by talking to the Wandering Minstrel and recounting the tale of the battle to him.

In Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, in Azys Lla, a weather called Hyperelectricy may rarely occur for a short period (about 5 real world minutes) in which an untargetable entity with the same model as Ultima Weapon, but colors closer to the Final Fantasy VI version, will fly around the zone. At the same time unmarked FATEs titled "Prey Online" will spawn referring to an entity called Proto Ultima. These FATEs will reward Proto Ultima Exoplating to participants that can be traded for a statless level 1 head piece called Ultima Horns.

After unlocking the raid Dun Scaith, the player character can talk to a Goblin in Idyllshire named Slipslix. Slipslix will refer to an Allagan monstrosity roaming the skies; which has perched in Dun Scaith for an unknown reason. After talking to the Slipslix, Proto Ultima will be unlocked as a fight in Dun Scaith raid; replacing a previously established fight. This version of Proto Ultima attacks with rapid sequences of aoes, as well as a spell called Supernova -- if allowed to cast, Supernova will instantly destroy the party. When slain, it provides Allagan Weapon Scap, which in turn can be exchanged in for high-level gear.

Etymology

Ultima means "the last" in Latin and many Latin-based languages. The word is an inflection of ultimus which is the superlative of ulter, which means "that is beyond". In the Spanish versions of many Final Fantasy games, the spell Ultima's name is written as "Artema", a close transliteration of the Japanese katakana.

Its Weapon moniker comes from the Weapon-type enemy, which are among the stronger enemies encounters.
