Ultima is an optional Esper located at the top of the Great Crystal in Giruvegan. The player can access the optional area of the Great Crystal after they have the Treaty-Blade. Ultima's battle is unique in that she cycles through different handicaps. Defeating Ultima rewards her icon in the Sky Pirate's Den in the Clan Primer, earning the player the title of "Fell Angel". She is then added to the party's License Board(s).
High Seraph, bringer of life and death.In-game Description
Ultima is the Rank III magical Holy Yarhi. To summon her on the Ring of Pacts, Shiva or Ramuh must be unlocked first. Her position on the Ring is the farthest spot from Zalera, the Death Seraph. Ultima is fought in Mission 57: Otherworldly Beauty, which takes place at the Underfane of Huin Qul. Defeating her gains Penelo her Quickening, Dance of Rapture.
- Revitalize - restores HP and removes debuffs from one character.
- Eschaton (Perfect Ultima) - deals Holy damage to a group of enemies in a straight line extending from Ultima.
Ultima is the final boss of the Orbonne Monastery 24-player raid. She resembles a fusion of her Final Fantasy XII appearance and her second form from Final Fantasy Tactics. Ultima created the auracite that feature heavily in the "Return to Ivalice" storyline.
Ultima is an extradimensional being that was summoned to Hydaelyn ages ago by Saint Ajora, the first of the legendary Zodiac Braves, in order to destroy Mullonde. She was sealed away by the mothercrystal, but centuries later awoke and so had to be sealed again by Ramza Beoulve and his comrades, who gave up their lives in exchange. It is theorized by the cast that the Ultima spell was based on her abilities.
According to the description given with her real-world collectible statue, mankind's fear of Ultima caused people to worship her, "feeding the extradimensional traveler's empty soul until it brimmed with a force completely alien to Her—a sense of self", making her a "living primal." Ultima's Triple Triad card states that she was once the "embodiment of pure ruination" and that she was fed by the terrified reverence of mankind, such that "by a process not unlike the prayer-fueled creation of a primal" she became self aware.
The Light of Kiltia, also known as the Church of Iocus, teaches that Ultima is a servant of god. On the other hand the Sect of Germonique believes that Ultima is god who will welcome them into heaven upon their death. Deemed heretical, this sect was banished from Dalmasca years ago.
In the present day, Ultima sought to use the Warrior of Light as a vessel to circumvent the seal keeping her imprisoned, as Ajora, who summoned her, and Ramza, who placed the seal, were Warriors of Light as well.
Ultima's followers, the Sect of Germonique, were taken in by the IVth Imperial Legion as part of its forces. Wielding auracite allegedly given to them by Ultima, they sacrifice their members to summon Lucavi as they believe that upon death they will be united with Ultima in heaven. It seems that they either do not know about Ultima's defeat during the Return to Ivalice storyline or do not think it matters.

The Ultima Sicarius ability card is available for all classes, dealing Light damage to a single target.

Ultima means "the last" in Latin and many Latin-based languages. In the Spanish versions of many Final Fantasy games, the spell Ultima's name is written as "Artema", a close transliteration of the Japanese katakana.
Ultima is referred to as the Kanya Ascendant, which is the Sanskrit name of its zodiac sign as used in Jyotish astrology. The name of Ultima's trademark attack, Eschaton, refers to the end of the world. It is from this term that the word "Eschatology" is taken, a branch of theology that refers to the study of end times.
