Twilight Odin is a boss in Final Fantasy XIII-2. It is the physical manifestation adopted by chaos from the memories of the Eidolon Odin. Serah and Noel fight it in the Vile Peaks 10 AF and 200 AF after it attacks a patrol ship full of Academy soldiers.

After defeating Twilight Odin in the Vile Peaks 10 AF, the party receives the Twilight Fragment Alpha, and by defeating Twilight Odin in the Vile Peaks 200 AF, the party receives the Twilight Fragment Beta.

Datalog[]

Twilight Fragment Alpha

The malevolent Twilight Odin is the 'dark shadow' that enveloped the Blitz Squadron in the Vile Peaks, 10 AF.

This entity exists outside time and can manifest in several eras at once. The source of its power, however, is but a single fragment, and the loss of this crystallized memory would weaken the shadowy being across every age.

Twilight Fragment Beta

The creature known as 'Twilight Odin' appears as a shadowy twin of the original Eidolon. In truth, it is a formless being of chaos that seeped into the mortal world from the Unseen Realm. This malignant force used a crystallized memory found in the Vile Peaks as a mold, and assumed the form of Odin.

The memory belongs to a certain l'Cie who saved Cocoon. It was in the Vile Peaks that she first faced and overcame the equine Eidolon warrior.

Battle[]

Twilight-odin-distortion-ffxiii2

Twilight Odin appears in a time distortion on the field.

Twilight Odin occasionally casts Thunder on himself, which both heals its HP and restores wound damage; constantly inflicting Wound damage will cause it to cast Thunder more frequently. After absorbing enough damage, Twilight Odin will start casting Thundara instead, and its flurry attacks will be accompanied by Thunder spells, wounding the party. It will also start using its stronger physical attacks. Should enough damage be absorbed again, it will cast Thundaga and its attacks will be accompanied by Thundara spells. When staggered, Twilight Odin's attack pattern resets, and it becomes susceptible to status ailments.

In the second fight, Twilight Odin's thunder spells happen periodically, and it can use all of its attacks right away. It will also maintain its absorbed damage when staggered and cure status ailments with Esuna. If enough time passes, Twilight Odin will use Zantetsuken to kill Noel and Serah; should either survive, Twilight Odin will use Zantetsuken again to ensure the battle ends.

Strategy[]

Good paradigms for this battle are:

  • Cerberus - COM/COM/COM
  • Tri-disaster - RAV/RAV/RAV
  • Bully - SAB/SYN/COM
  • Thaumaturgy - RAV/RAV/MED

The player should start with an offensive paradigm, and get the chain gauge started, then switch to Tri-disaster and stagger Twilight Odin and switch to Bully and debuff the boss. Buffs on the party are not essential, although they may help. The party should switch back to Cerberus and land as many attacks as possible before the chain resets. This should take Twilight Odin to half health, after which the procedure can be repeated.

Facing Twilight Odin the second time, it is possible to debuff him from the start. It is best to start with Bully until Twilight Odin is fully debuffed. It isn't necessary to continuously reapply the debuffs after Odin heals them; however, maintaining Imperil will prevent it from entering enraged state. The party should switch to Tri-disaster and stagger it, switch to Cerberus and land attacks on Odin until the stagger ends or the boss dies. It is good to use a Feral Link (if possible) and full ATB moves just before the stagger gauge returns to normal.

Paradigm Pack[]

Once Twilight Odin is defeated in the Vile Peaks 200 AF, it will join the player party as a Commando. Its development is slow at first, but its stats (particularly HP) rapidly accelerate during the last stage. Twilight Odin is expensive to develop, requiring 269 Crystals to reach level 99. Once it reaches its maximum level, Twilight Odin is one of the most powerful monsters outside of DLC.

Twilight Odin has slow animation speeds, especially when casting magic, and the length of his Attack animation results in relatively low damage-per-second rates. By Wounding enemies, Twilight Odin's Bloodthirsty auto-ability will bolster its attacks, resulting in signficiantly higher damage per ATB segment than other Commandos with comparable Strength stats. Due to its size, Twilight Odin's Blitz has a signficiantly greater area of effect than Serah or Noel's. Twilight Odin is good for recruiting monster crystals, as its Zantetsuken Feral Link gets close to 999% synchronization when performed perfectly.

Twilight Odin's animation for normal Attacks is Flourish of Steel; this deals four separate hits with each individual action, meaning that infusing Attack: ATB Charge II and Siphon Boost II will allow Odin to restore an entire ATB segment per action. Launch takes the form of Skyward Swing, which hits three times per action; Blindside, Powerchain, and Scourge take the form of Crushing Blow; and Blitz takes the form of Seismic Strike. Twilight Odin cannot Attack airborne enemies and will resort to using Ruin if the enemy is out of range of his weapon.

Twilight Odin is a one-of-a-kind monster. If the player releases it or infuses it into another monster, the player will be unable to obtain another Twilight Odin unless they have downloaded Snow's DLC episode, in which a Level 99 Valfodr has Twilight Odin as a rare drop.

Behind the scenes[]

XIII-2 Odin

Concept art.

Despite official art of Twilight Odin depicting a hooded light brown figure, the Twilight Odin in the game is a black and green replica of Odin's Final Fantasy XIII appearance.

The original plan for the ending of Final Fantasy XIII-2 was for Lightning to sequentially defeat dark Eidolons akin to Twilight Odin, but since the story needed to come to a close, it "ended up the way it did".[1]

Twilight Odin's Bestiary entry states it has 90 chain resistance, in contrast to its chain resistance in each of the battles with it. An apparent bug also prevents its shield from appearing in the second battle, though this is purely visual.

Etymology[]

Twilight on Earth is the illumination of the lower atmosphere when the Sun itself is not directly visible because it is below the horizon. Twilight is produced by sunlight scattering in the upper atmosphere, illuminating the lower atmosphere so that Earth's surface is neither completely lit nor completely dark. The word twilight is also used to denote the periods of time when this illumination occurs.

In Germanic mythology, Odin (from Old Norse Óðinn) is a widely revered god. In Norse mythology, from which stems most of our information about the god, Odin is associated with healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet, and is the husband of the goddess Frigg.
