Celes should use Runic. Put Locke in charge of direct attacks and equip him with Genji Glove, if you have it. The TunnelArmr's primary attack is Drill.

Final Fantasy VI PlayStation Bestiary entry

The Tunnel Armor, otherwise known as TunnelArmr, is a boss in Final Fantasy VI. It is encountered by Locke and Celes on their way through the South Figaro Cave. It can be heard drilling through the dungeon on the second visit.

As the Tunnel Armor emerges from the rear part of the cave, where in the World of Ruin a passage leads to the submerged Figaro Castle, the Gestahlian Empire was likely using the machine to try and dig to the castle before it was ordered to prevent Locke and Celes from escaping.

Stats[]

Battle[]

The Tunnel Armor attacks using almost entirely magical attacks, casting Thunder, Fire, and occasionally Poison and Magitek Laser. Its only non-magic attack, besides its normal attack, is its special attack, Drill, which does high physical damage to a single target. When the fight begins, Celes warns Locke the Tunnel Armor uses a lot of magic, and says she can absorb its spells with Runic.

Strategy[]

The player is advised to use Runic with Celes every turn, negating the Tunnel Armor's magical attacks while Locke attacks it. As long as Celes keeps absorbing the boss's magic and Locke uses Potions to heal when needed, the battle will be long but not overly difficult.

A chest in the upper-left portion of the cave contains a Thunder Rod. When used as an item, it casts Thundara on all enemies, which would kill the Tunnel Armor in a single hit. If the player leaves the chest alone, it later contains a rare Hero's Ring, so they must consider if forfeiting the ring is worth the easy victory.

Unless the player has saved Locke's scenario for last, it is advised to de-equip him and Celes of any powerful relics and armor pieces, allowing them to pass these items on to their party in the next scenario. Celes's Runic allows her to be placed in the back row without detriment to her and thus the player does not need high-level armor to be safe, so this will not hinder them greatly.

Strategy

If the Magitek Armor was a training exercise, then this is the party's first real field test against machines. Good thing this game recharges parties between Records, because when the player first meets up with Tunnel Armor, it hits like a truck and will fry unsuspecting party members with its magic attacks. But this time, neither Locke nor Celes is available to help unless the player took time to pick them up in their events. Instead, pick a party with strong Black Magic ability, be it by spells or spellblades, to short-circuit it. Have Black Mages on hand and casting Thundara and Watera if held; otherwise, warrior types with spellblades will more than suffice. Have White Mages protect and heal the party; the rest should attack until given orders to the contrary. In time, it will fall, completing the opening game and allowing the player to dive further into the adventure.

Celes could join after this battle provided the acceptance of a Bonus Quest that ran through Forgotten Bond, and the completion of this dungeon on the Classic track. She does her best work as a Spellblade.
