The Troll is an enemy in the original Final Fantasy. It is found in the Cavern of Earth, and around certain towns, such as Onrac and Lufenia. In sprites and concept art the Troll is shown clutching its head. A friendly soul of a Troll in the Whisperwind Cove dungeon in Soul of Chaos moans about its head aching. This refers to some folklore on trolls saying they suffer from a constant ringing in their ears.

Stats[edit | edit source]

Battle[edit | edit source]

Troll can hit up to three times in a single attack and regenerate a portion of its health each turn. It is not hard to defeat, and is weak in comparison to other monsters in the Cavern of Earth, such as the Earth Elemental or the Hill Gigas.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

The player should use physical attacks and Fire spells, if the Black or Red Mages in the party have it. Cure is not typically necessary.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

A troll is a supernatural being in Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore. In Old Norse sources, beings described as trolls dwelt in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves, lived together in small family units, and were rarely helpful to humans. Later, in Scandinavian folklore, trolls became beings in their own right where they lived far from human habitation, were not Christianized, and were considered dangerous. Depending on the region their appearance varied from ugly and slow-witted to looking and behaving exactly like human beings. Trolls are sometimes associated with particular landmarks, which at times are explained as formed from a troll exposed to sunlight.
