Appearances

Final Fantasy VI

Trine (Train on the SNES) originally appears as a non-attainable enemy skill. It inflicts Blind and Silence to the party. It is used by Rest, Kefka, Kaiser Dragon and Plague.

Final Fantasy VII

Trine is an Enemy Skill used only by Stilva, Materia Keeper, and Godo. It inflicts moderate Lightning-elemental damage to all enemies at the cost of 20 MP and it cannot be reflected. After disc 2, if not learned before completing the Pagoda in Wutai, it becomes one of the only two missable enemy skills, with the other being Pandora's Box.

Trine's spell power is equal to 2.125x the base magic damage. Trine is capable of killing most enemies in one hit when it is first acquired, and also targets every enemy. As Trine consumes low MP, it is a favorable choice for finishing off random encounters. This makes Trine an efficient way to unlock the first Limit Break of the next level that requires a certain number of kills for each character.

Final Fantasy XIV

Trine is an ability used exclusively by Kefka in the Sigmascape V4 Savage raid during his angelic/"god" form phase. It fills the arena evenly in predetermined spots with triangles that will detonate with large AoEs at each point in the order that they appeared. Getting hit by an explosion will do significant damage and apply both a Damage Down and Vulnerability debuff on the victim.

Kefka Palazzo

Kefka can use Trine as an HP attack. It summons three triangles to converge around enemies. Kefka can cast Trine only in the air initially and learns the ground variation at Level 12. It costs 40 CP to equip and 180 AP to master.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

Trine is one of Kefka's HP attacks. The spell has been altered so that the triangles move faster but does not track the target and do not remain on the field for as long. The initial CP cost has been reduced to 30 and requires 130 AP to master.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Trine is Kefka's 3rd HP attack, learned at level 5. It summons four triangles to surround the target that then explodes. By holding the button and charging, Kefka can activate Trine three times in succession. On hit, it inflicts blind and prevents the use of EX skills for a short while.

Etymology

A trine is an angle of 120° (1/3 of the 360° ecliptic). A separation (orb) of 120±04° is considered a trine. The trine indicates harmony, and ease of expression, with the two elements reinforcing each other.
