Trials are a type of duty found in Final Fantasy XIV. They differ from other duties in that they feature only a single boss encounter, where other duties typically have multiple boss encounters and regular enemies in between.
There are three difficulty levels to trials. Normal modes require only 4 players, and only three of them are encountered early in the game. Once players arrive at the endgame, they will start encountering Hard mode trials, which require 8 players. The most difficult trials are Extreme modes, which are among the most difficult encounters in the game at the time of their release, many of them being seen as superbosses. No Extreme mode trials are required for the main scenario.
A Trials roulette can be found in the Duty Finder, which will enter a solo player into a random Hard mode trial that they have already completed with greater rewards than queueing for specific trials, as well as extra bonuses that can only be received once per day. Normal mode trials can instead be found in the Leveling roulette, as their difficulty is on par with leveling dungeons. Extreme mode trials cannot be found on any roulette, as they are typically far too difficult for players to be thrown into randomly with complete strangers.

- The Minstrel's Ballad: Ultima's Bane and Urth's Fount are unique in that they are not Extreme versions of previously existing trials. Instead, Ultima's Bane is an Extreme version of the encounter from the Praetorium dungeon, and Urth's Fount is an Extreme version of the "Steel Reign" FATE.
- Only a handful of trials have not received Extreme modes, those being Cape Westwind, A Relic Reborn: The Chimera, A Relic Reborn: The Hydra, Battle on the Big Bridge, The Dragon's Neck, Battle in the Big Keep, The Chrysalis, The Steps of Faith, and Kugane Ohashi. All but Kugane Ohashi are from A Realm Reborn. Every trial since the release of Heavensward had an Extreme mode prior to the release of Kugane Ohashi as the final trial of Stormblood.
- All Hard trials featuring primals prior to the Singularity Reactor featured the "(Hard)" tag in their duty name. This was an artifact from the first three Hard modes, which needed to differentiate themselves from their Normal modes. Once it became clear that Hard modes had completely replaced Normal modes, and that no new Normal trials would be released, the developers stopped appending the "(Hard)" tag to new trials.
- The Crown of the Immaculate is the only trial to feature an item level sync. This is because its level requirement of 79 allows the use of level 80 (the Shadowbringers level cap) characters, who can drastically overpower the trial as they acquire endgame equipment. The item level sync prevents them from trivializing the encounter. This same adjustment was crucially not made to the similar Cape Westwind, a level 49 trial that often sees level 50 (the A Realm Reborn level cap) characters beating it in seconds.
