Cosmos, the goddess of harmony, imbued us with the power she said we would need in order to fight Chaos. What she gave us was something we had no way of using on our own - divine energy that would rest inside us, awaiting the proper catalyst. According to her, it was a strength that would be tempered through battle - by our own wills - and would eventually coalesce to form a crystal. As she told it, that crystal would then grant us, her soldiers, power to rival that of the gods themselves. So, simple as that. Fight the armies of Chaos, collect your crystal, and go take down the god of discord. At least that was the plan, as we all headed back to the field of battle once again. What we found when we got there was something else entirely: opposition of a form we never could have expected.
Lightning
Chapter one, titled A New Threat, is the second level available on Story Mode in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy. This chapter features Lightning.
Some time after leaving Order's Sanctuary with Cosmos' power, Lightning, Tifa, Laguna and Vaan head back out to the field of battle. Entering a Gateway they find a strange creature in the image of Lightning that attacks them. Unsure what the creatures are, the group decides to return to Sanctuary to consult Cosmos before they get overwhelmed by the increasing number of enemies. At the end of the next Gateway they find Kuja and Kefka, the latter of which goads Kuja to attack them. Lightning sends the others ahead while she fights Kuja, and Kefka laughs afterwards. When Lightning questions his lack of concern for the death of his allies Kefka replies that he'll come back, but vanishes without explaining what he means.
Lightning continues to the next Gateway alone, and in the Chaos Shrine finds Kain and a wounded Bartz. When Bartz groans Kain's name as Lightning kneels next to him, she narrowly evades Kain attacking her. The two battle, and afterwards Exdeath and Garland enter. Kain takes Bartz and escapes, Exdeath pursuing him. Garland tells Lightning that an army of manikins will sweep across the land soon and annihilate them, and thus he does not need to fight her himself. Telling her the automatons are merciless and cruel, and her allies have already "departed", Garland takes his leave, bidding her farewell.

As this is the first true Gateway the player goes though, there is nothing notable about it or the enemies inside. The player should have no difficulty clearing out the Gateway, though the Delusory Dragoon at C6 is stronger than the other three enemies and should not be underestimated if the player is new to the game.
Laguna: It's not that I have a bad sense of direction. I'm just interested in all directions. Lightning: Taking an interest is fine, but how do you explain getting lost after looking around?

In this gateway the player has the chance to make good use of Chain skills. A Straight Chain used at C3 will allow the player to earn 16 KP and opens the path to both chests. If the player has been fortunate enough to find a Multi Chain, using it at D3 allows them to chain all five enemies and earn 25 KP.
