O'aka XXIII from Final Fantasy X.

The traveling merchant is a recurring type of a character in the Final Fantasy series, selling the party supplies during their adventures allowing them to replenish their inventory. They usually follow the party across their adventures, or are already present in the area the party arrives to.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy V[]

In the Game Boy Advance and discontinued 2013 versions, the Traveling Merchant can be met in the Sealed Temple. Afterward he can be found throughout the world in equipment shops and he will sell the player ammunition for the Cannoneer job.

Final Fantasy IX[]

The player will meet Stiltzkin numerous times. He will always have things to sell, and will offer to sell the party three items for a set price.

Final Fantasy X[]

O'aka XXIII is an itinerant merchant who frequently appears around Spira to sell items. He sells items, weapons, and armor. He returns in Final Fantasy X-2 as a salesman, but no longer travels the world popping up in different locations.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Dyce is a merchant who travels Ivalice with his chocobo selling wares. He is encountered in various points. He sells items, ammunition, weapons, accessories, and magicks.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

Chocolina is a time-traveling merchant who follows Serah and Noel during their adventures through time. She sells them items, weapons, accessories, monster materials, and special items.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII[]

Forge (Rare) appears randomly, selling some exclusive garbs along with some more common ones and an adornment.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Rowena used to be a traveling merchant in Ul'dah before she settled down in Revenant's Toll in A Realm Reborn. Her business is focusing on trading rare items with high profile adventurers.

In Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, she moves her shop to Idyllshire as it is the newest popular camp of adventurers.

Another traveling merchant appears in the beginning of Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, although it is later revealed he was killed by a sin eater shortly after he parted ways with the Warrior of Light. He shares the appearance of the travelling merchant triplets encountered at the beginning of A Realm Reborn scenario, who reappear later within the Waking Sands.

Final Fantasy Legend II[]

The Traveling Merchant only appears after the party reaches Final Town. Afterwards, he'll be found loitering inside the Item Shops found across the different worlds.

Etymology[]

A merchant is a person who trades in commodities produced by other people to earn a profit. A merchant historically was anyone who was involved in business as long as industry, commerce, and trade have existed.
