Deal damage based on total steps taken to all foes in range.

Description

Traveler is a Technick in Final Fantasy XII that deals fixed damage to an enemy and enemies in range in its vicinity based on the number of steps currently taken. After being used, or after 1000 steps, the counter resets. Traveler is purchased from Technicks shops. In the original PlayStation 2 version, all player characters who have the License Board can activate it. In the Zodiac versions, it is used by certain jobs and Vossler.

Traveler is based on the Lore spell of the same name from Final Fantasy VI.

Obtain[]

The license for Traveler costs 50 License Points in the Zodiac versions and 65 LP in the original. In the original PlayStation 2 version, Traveler is sold in Technicks shops in Rabanastre (after Ondore's Estate) and Nalbina Fortress (after Judge Bergan) for 6700 gil.

In the Zodiac versions, the Technick is sold in the following Technicks shops for 4800 gil after defeating Belias: Rabanastre, Nalbina Fortress, and Bhujerba, as well as in Jahara, Eruyt Village, Mt Bur-Omisace, Mosphoran Highwaste (after defeating Judge Bergan), Phon Coast, Archades, and Balfonheim (after visiting Draklor Laboratory). It is also found in Trial Mode Stage 31 treasure with the Diamond Armlet equipped.

In the Zodiac versions, Traveler can be used by the Machinist, Archer and Shikari jobs, and Monk and Foebreaker can learn it if they acquire the Esper Zalera's license first. In the Zodiac versions, Vossler also has it when he joins as a guest.

Mechanics[]

The calculation depends on this formula. A hidden counter keeps track of this data. Whenever the counter exceeds 999, or damage is dealt with the Technick, it resets to 0. Traveler has a success rate of 100% and will never miss.

Steps taken (n) Formula
0 to 99 n×1
100 to 499 n×2
500 to 989 n×3
990 to 999 n×10

It can reach flying enemies and its damage is unaffected by Reverse. It does not awake sleeping targets, and if the user has the Inquisitor license, they will gain MP when damaging enemies with Traveler.

The step count is in the bottom right next to the time played.

Traveler requires too much micromanaging to be of much use; for fixed damage, the player can use Gil Toss. However, if the player can time it just right, they can potentially do 9900–9990 damage to multiple targets even at low levels. The downside is that the player needs to take 990 to 999 steps again for the Technick to be useful the next time. The step count is shown in the menu, and the player only needs to pay attention to the final three digits.
